Love Randolph Scott. Hard to pick a favorite but I would have to go with Buchanan Rides Alone as it was the first Randolph Scott western I saw. It was also the first movie I can remember watching with my grandpa.
I just watched a bunch of Randolph Scott Westerns - wow great flicks and Rides alone was probably my favourite.
⚘
Ride Lonesome is one of my top five favorite westerns, and Randolph Scott is my favorite western star. I can’t wait to get this collection
This is a great set at a great price, especially considering that you are getting 12 movies, which is a wonderful deal. I'll have to check them out for sure. Thanks as always Heath for another awesome video. I really appreciate the hard work!
My favorite is Comanche Station. Fascinating story with an ending that brought tears to my eyes.
LIKE number 1 which is always fun. To quote a line from 'Blazing Saddles', "You'd do it for Randolph Scott." ;)
I pre-ordered this in May when it was announced, it was set back a few months, so finally getting soon!! Can't wait absolutely love Randolph scott!! thanks Heath for spotlighting him and his movies!! hopefully Warner archive will do Seven men from now on bluray next year? fingers crossed!!
Seven Men From Now would be such a perfect fit for Warner Archive. Yes, fingers crossed!
Great review as always. I got my copy recently. Good mini-doc and I'm glad they did commentaries but aside from The Tall T my other favorite two (Decision at Sundown and Ride Lonesome) didn't get a commentary. Really hoping to hear opinions on those, especially Decision at Sundown, which has a story that doesn't end the way you think it will and it casts Randy as a bitter, revenge-filled (anti) hero (I think of it as Randy's The Searchers).
I would definitely do it for Randolph Scott.
Thank you. This looks great. I just ordered it! I have 7 Men From Now on DVD and I love it.
Fabulous collection.
Give the people what they want (pretty please)! Westerns Spotlight Vol. 2 😁
Buchanan Rides Alone is so great!!!!
Great overview of a set I have on pre-order. I have two Warner Brothers DVDs with three Scott 50's westerns on each, such as RIDING SHOTGUN. These are all a notch or two below the Boetticher westerns, but they are still good, solid westerns. I wish Warner Archive would reissue these six films and other Scott titles such as WESTBOUND into a blu-ray collection.
I have those two Warner Bros. triple features too! I agree with your assessment that they're still very enjoyable, though they don't rise to the quality of the Boetticher westerns. They're unmemorable, but that doesn't mean they're bad. They're just solid, enjoyable films. Warner has so much movie history in their vault, but a lot of it is just sitting there untouched. Thank goodness for Warner Archive.
I like that yhese are all gathered together. I may pass this up. I have purchased the Powerhouse Indicator Randolph films. That series are all restorationswith wonderful special features. However, for someonewho is just discoveringthis great actor, this will be the best way to gain a wuick appreciation of this genre.😎📽.
own them all already
I'm loving the cactus shirt
Just got mine today from Menards I was surprised they carried it small dvd collection there got it for $12.99 plus tax.
Thanks for sharing the Westerns love. I'm hoping we get some more Audie Murphy releases, especially Ride Clear of Diablo and Guns of Fort Petticoat.
There's an amazing Audie Murphy region free DVD set out of Australia that I highly recommend, just for getting so many of his movies on disc, including Ride Clear of Diablo: viavision.com.au/shop/audie-murphy-ultimate-western-collection/
@@CerealAtMidnight that looks nice, was hoping for Blu-Ray.
Will have to check it out!!
I don't think I've seen any Randolph Scott movies. This video makes me interested in checking some out. I like westerns and Clint Eastwood and spaghetti westerns, but I haven't seen as many older American westerns outside of some John Wayne and James Stewart
Are you planning a review on the new Criterion 4K Ranown set?
Looks like Sony did new 4K restorations.
Yes!
Looks like a great set. I have the Indicator Five Tall Tales set so I would be overlapping 5 of these but would be cool to get the other 7 films I don't have. I do love a good western and would like to explore more Randolph Scott as before the Indicator set and the Warner Archive blu ray of Ride the High Country I had not really seen his work. It is awesome that it is being revived.
I may need to do a Randolph Scott collection spotlight. There's a lot of stuff out there! In Australia, Viavision released their own Randolph Scott Collection to DVD and 7 of the 8 films included aren't in this Mill Creek set. He also pops up in the first Kino Lorber Western Classics box set. As you say, it's so good to see his career getting all this attention.
@@CerealAtMidnight oh I might need to get that Western Classics kino set. I have that in my wishlist (been a while since I looked at it so forgot what westerns were in it but cool to know a Randolph film is in there) and I really liked Kino's Dark Side of Cinema noir sets. I bet their Western Classics sets are just as good. Did not know Via Vision had a Randolph Scott set. I'll have to browse JB now that we are coming out of lockdown (finally)...can probably find that DVD set for a very low price there. Thanks for the info. Speaking of westerns I recently watched The Bravados from 1958 with Gregory Peck. Really enjoyed that one!
I’ve only seen 3 of his westerns: ride the high country, Jesse James and 7 men from now! I believe 7 men from now was a recommendation you gave last year in a video on westerns (or I at least picked it up since you were speaking about budd Boetticher and I love westerns but hadn’t seen his films!)
NICE! I've been talking about these movies for a long time! How did you like Seven Men From Now? I try not to over-sell those recommendations, but I really like that movie a lot. Lee Marvin is just the coolest.
@@CerealAtMidnight I liked it a lot actually! I have a western ranking list on Letterboxd and it’s top 50 for sure! I liked simple and naturalistic cinematography and the film is short and straight to the point. Marvin’s performance was definitely one of the best points as he was the villain while simultaneously being charming and likable. Kinda reminded me of his later role as Liberty Valance!
@@CerealAtMidnight yeah it’s always tough to recommend westerns cause most people don’t like them 😩
Found this at Menards for $12
How does this set compare to the Five Tall Tales set from Indicator? Are they using the same transfers?
I believe four of the five are the same transfers, with a new transfer for Ride Lonesome from Indicator,. The Indicator set is wonderful and has tons of special features, but it's hard to argue with the fact that Indicator has five movies and this set has twelve. This one is also currently only $25: amzn.to/3ExuyEa
If you love westerns, you probably want them both. Westerns are not big sellers and it's unlikely that most of these movies are ever going to get another disc release, let alone new restorations for most of the films.
Feef Sutton buddy.P.S. Great video, as usual.
Cheers.
It's a shame there aren't a few essential Scott Columbia outings in this. Coroner Creek and Gunfighters are both great, but not in this. I guess they defaulted to actual Technicolor films instead of the bleh looking Cinecolor of those two.
All of these are at least solid to great except for one of them: Decision at Sundown. If you watch it you will know what I mean. I still remember watching it years ago on the Western Channel and I spent half an hour ranting and raving when it was over. I defy anyone who buys this set to tell me they enjoy that movie.
Try to round up some Lee Van Cleff westerns sometime. At least for me, they're very hard to find.
Love Lee Van Cleef! Kino Lorber has been VERY good to Van Cleef, and so has Arrow Video. Just last week, Eureka released the Sabata trilogy on a special edition Blu-ray set, too, but it's region B locked. www.klstudioclassics.com/search?q=person%7C%7CLee+Van+Cleef&dvd=off&dvd=on&bluray=off&bluray=on
As these transfers come from Sony do you know if this set is Region Free as Mill Creek are usually Region locked. Anyone know?
Sorry, not sure! Hopefully someone can weigh in soon.
@@CerealAtMidnight Thanks.
What is the Picture Quality like ? which has the BEST and Worst PQ ?? ..... I have seen them on you tube and streaming on my 4k firestick. the 1950's westerns were the BEST ! My western Bluray collection is 90% 1950's ! ....1950 to 1959 are my Favorite years for western movies. Thanks, Rick
The picture quality is solid, but not exceptional. The HD transfers are probably a decade old, maybe more. These are not new masters and there is some evidence of compression when I view them on my 55 inch 4K TV. Not much compression, but it's there. May be baked into the source material that Sony sent Mill Creek. Can't comment on the best or the worst, as there are so many variables. The movie from 1943 would be the one that has visually held up the poorest, but it looks good enough for what it is. The Boetticher films look the best, because they're the youngest films in the set (at just over 60 years old).
As much as I absolutely love Randolph Scott and these films, I cannot get behind Mill Creek and these sets. Yes, they are giving us a bargain, but so did the old Good Times Home Video label. I have a number of Mill Creek releases but I see them as just placeholders for better quality releases, if those ever come. Randolph Scott’s Boetticher films deserve a Criterion release.
Boetticher's films got a stellar region free release from Powerhouse Indicator in the UK a few years ago, which is now sold out. It featured new scans and restorations for all the films, tons of special features both new and old, and a thick book full of essays and behind the scenes info. It's the high benchmark for the Ranown Cycle, surpassing even Criterion standards.
Good Times? That feels incredibly hyperbolic, and makes me question what you're referring to as the benchmark for your disdain. I'm always a bit surprised when someone tells me they'd rather not own movies they love at all than own them if they're distributed by (insert company here). It feels like not that long ago that I was circling films in the TV Guide that I wanted to record to VHS so I could have them forever, since that was the only way to see some of the more obscure Hollywood offerings. As someone who actually still has some Good Times VHS tapes because it was the only way to own the movie I wanted to see, I think it goes without saying that these HD transfers safely make every standard definition transfer that has come before obsolete.
@@CerealAtMidnight I think your right about the Good Times hyperbole here. It was honestly the best comparison I could think of at the time but perhaps a bit much. I mean, those VHS came with as little tape possible. My years of working at Musicland back in the day soured me to their products (or boomerangs as we called “returns”).
I’ve several Indicator single releases and certainly know their quality. I think that’s what makes Mill Creek feel like a big step down. I’m not always convinced of their commitment to quality but I certainly can’t begrudge their budget-friendly mindset. I don’t know the folks at Mill Creek so I can’t attest to their love of cinema and the films they gravitate toward releasing. Like I mentioned before, I’m not beyond buying them as placeholders if or when they get a better quality (subjective) release. The Gorgon (or The Gorgan as spelled on the Mill Creek box) was a delight to replace for the better quality transfer from Indicator. Granted I owned this on DVD…which seemed just fine for years. 🤷🏼♂️
@@CerealAtMidnight Good Times were often public domain copies on crappy VHS, while the Mill Creek Blu-rays are licensed directly from the studios. So that's already a big step up. Having them on Blu-ray is an ever bigger step up. Yes, that guy was being hyperbolic.
How do the transfers of the Ranown westerns compare to the Indicator releases?
My understanding is that Indicator did their own in-house HD remasters and even did a 2K scan for one of the films, so those definitely look better. I don't think those were available to Mill Creek (I believe Indicator retains those remasters), so what we have here are solid catalog HD remasters that were probably made years ago. This set is definitely not a replacement for the Indicator set, but may be worth picking up for those 7 other films that don't have Blu-rays anywhere else.
I love 1950s + westerns, just wondering, I have a lot of Spanish releases and I notice the running time is shorter than American releases, is this just a mistake on the running times or a copyright clause?
If those are dvd’s then the Spanish ones will be in PAL format which run faster than their American NTSC counterparts.
Do you think this collection is a good replacement for the Budd.
Boetticher collection?
I would say it's a good supplement to the Boetticher set, but not a replacement. The Films of Budd Boetticher box set has the introductions by Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood, and Taylor Hackford, PLUS the documentary A MAN CAN DO THAT, and even different commentaries on that set than you'll find on the Mill Creek set. But since the Mill Creek set presents all the movies in HD with NEW commentaries, a new featurette, and the nifty booklet, I think it's definitely worth a purchase for people who already have the films on DVD. It's only $3.58 per movie, too. I'll be keeping both, as well as my FIVE TALL TALES box set from Indicator, which has even more special features.
@@CerealAtMidnight Do you know if any of these films have subtitles?
Is this code free?
The “restoration” work on this set is laughably bad. Looks like a piss poor dvd upscales. Such a huge disappointment. Randolph Scott deserves better.
As noted in this review, these aren't new restorations, these are what Sony had in their vaults and are probably YEARS old. Indicator restored the Budd Boetticher films for their FIVE TALL TALES box set a few years ago, but they paid for those and they retain the rights
.
We have a choice. We can complain about what Randolph Scott deserves and have extremely high expectations, or we can recognize that these movies are 70 and 80 years old and are not a priority for Sony whatsoever. And should they be? Randolph Scott may move a couple of thousand copies of something, whereas Venom makes half a billion dollars in theaters. From a strictly financial perspective, it makes no sense to spend the thousands of dollars required to restore just one Randolph Scott film, let alone 12 of them. So do we complain about what could have been, or do we accept that we are a a very small surviving market and that we're fortunate to be able to own a dozen old westerns in HD for $40, which is $3.33 per movie, plus brand new bonus features like a documentary and a commentary?
I choose to celebrate that 12 Randolph Scott movies have been rescued from obscurity and can be viewed whenever we want in better quality than any home media audience has ever had access to! Let's never forget how fortunate we are as movie fans!
