  • Is Landscape Photography A Competition
In this vlog i shoot locally at Llyn Padarn on the river bank at Llanberis. The weather was perfect plenty of clouds with fleeting light and compositions that worked well with the light.
I also discuss is landscape photography a competition, do you really need to go racing around the country looking for the perfect shot we often see?

I totally agree with you Jason,
its about getting out and finding shots you personally like.
I dont think i would drive hundreds of miles with what you have there.

Cheers Jason, it’s Sean in Atlanta. I am in total agreement with you because photography is very personal for me. I go out every single morning when it’s not raining, and I get really excited when I take an image that knocks me out! I am self-taught through CZcams videos and the School of Hard Knocks. It has been a journey that I have really enjoyed and I am hooked on photography now, probably for the rest of my existence on this planet.
This was an excellent video, and I think I enjoyed the colour images versus the black-and-white. You are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of the world where you can simply walk out your door and have all of the landscape and woodland images that you could ever desire! I have never been to Wales, but it is on my bucket list! I am planning a trip back to London this November, and perhaps I can scoot up to Wales at that time. After all, anything is possible, if you just put your mind to it!
Thanks for a great video and I will be watching…
    Sean

Nice one Jason you spoke a lot of sense in saying you like to take pictures of where you live and what's the point in traveling the ends of the country to photograph where others have been to get a must have picture! you live in a lovely part of the world where I have been many times when I was a young man and the last time I was there was for a wedding! and I took pictures of the castle....(but not the tree)..... Thank you, I enjoyed listening to your views on photography....

Good vlog Jason, it's good to hear some refreshing honest opinions in photography videos. Good photos, but yes the ground along the lake is a bloody mud bath these days.

They're rushes, how often do I have to shout it at the screen, they're bloody rushes, like in the Burns poem 'Green Grow the Rushes O' 😁
I subscribe specifically because you stick to your own patch, and you know it better than any incomer. You can wait for the weather and pick and choose your moment. I spent (mis-spent) most of my youth travelling around the Highlands; these days I've fallen in love with what's now my local patch of the Central Belt and rarely leave it, although I could be in Glencoe in an hour and a half it doesn't call to me. There's too much to discover here to go on a photography trip elsewhere, and still be home for tea !
    Glad the foot's improving.

nice to see you really getting back in to it Jason, I agree why drive all around the country when you have beautiful locations on your doorstep, also the cost is a big part of what we can do, these days, I thinks these images you have displayed here are some of the best you have done for some time in my opinion, what's happed to you Panasonic I think it was, keep up the good work mate, thanks foe sharing.

For me, landscape photography is one of those activities where doing it is more important than just taking the resulting photo. The temperature, wind, smell - it's all missing on photos or movie.

No wonder you got a bad foot making dance videos haha. You right in everything you said it's not a competition but you do get that feeling that it is from some photographers. As soon as this weather starts to break we hope to visit snowdonia more often now that we have a campervan because that's where our emotional connection is. Really enjoyed this vlog hearing you talk about something like that keeps the interest. Great images as always 👌

Thanks for the video, Jason. I agree with the link with your own area, but you can make a special link too with certain other places where you feel that kindred spirit. But the whole thing of chasing the same image as others has made some landscape photography so boring! Like a dog who feels they've got to leave their mark on the approved spots, or someone trying to bond with a well-known photographer by copying their picture or style. Anyway, you have some very nice pics and I like what you're saying. Parts of Snowdonia are a haunt for me too, though a bit of a drive up from Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire, which I feel very lucky to live in.

One of the first lessons I learned way back about landscape photography was the use of trees in framing an image, and that has proved useful time and time again as you have often demonstrated as well. And yes you're right ... we've got it all here in Wales, especially Eryri .. had to get that in didn't I .. lol.

I enjoyed the video as usual Jason.
As you say Photography is not a competition and i agree with everything that you said.
Great image's as usual, but i think my favourite one was the B&W one of the two trees with the castle and the mountain in the background.
    Fantastic image.
Look forward to the next one.

There are many landscape photographers who enjoy taking photos for fun and are not interested in competing with others.

I HATE photo contests. They are divisive and all about personalities and cliques. They are the worst part of photo clubs. The only person that I have to please is myself.
