  • The Super Nintendo was home to some truly legendary games in genres ranging from 2d platformers to RPGs, racing games and action side-scrollers. However, if there is one area where they couldn't quite complete with other consoles of the time it may be with the lineup of shooting games, with quick associations brining up slowdown and a relative lack of of big-name titles. Even still, one game stands out as classic of the era because of its unique graphical details and fun shooting mechanics - Konami's Axelay.

Thanks for talking about this classic, I can't believe people say U.N. Squadron or Space Megaforce is the best shooter on the system when this exists.

I think it is really one of the best shooters out there - had a blast playing it. Thanks for watching!

Stunning game. Loved it then and love it now. And a soundtrack that gives you goosebumps. These games from the SNES' golden age were pieces of art.

To me the most memorable part of this game is the final level with the boss fight and the soundtrack, they are just so good.

My God I could write a book on how amazing this game is. Easily in my top 5 SHMUPS of all time along with Einhander and G Darius. The music was phenomenal of course and always got dramatic at certain actiony parts of stages. So many satisfying explosion and crusty sounds and I love how organic enemies made that juicy little "jib-jib" when you killed them. Plus the game just had such a dark and almost hopeless atmosphere to it, although it wasn't too difficult. Still one if the best

Axelay is an absolute masterpiece. The stunning graphics are expertly crafted and full of flair. The soundtrack is majestic brilliance that suits the action perfectly. Gameplay feels very smooth and tightly honed. The distinct stages -- both vertical and horizontal -- are full of atmosphere and imagination. Then you have the unforgettable range of interesting bosses that are fun to tackle and defeat. Every facet of the game blends together perfectly to deliver a thrilling shooter that is always a joy to go back to. It easily stands proud alongside the best shoot 'em ups for the Mega Drive & PC Engine.

4:47 Axelay doesn't use mode 7 at all, instead uses the SNES HDMA and mode 1, using 2 background layers for the effect.

Exactly and honestly, the effect doesn't look right, perspective isn't right, it just melts. Sonic 3D Blast uses the same effect in its bonus backgrounds, didn't look right even when I was a kid.

This game was the highlight of my early teens! Played through it multiple times and it was a blast every time! I kinda wonder what a modern remake with added stages would be like. As long as the spirit and feel of the original was captured perfectly I think many would enjoy it!

the sheer fact that the enemy fears you enough to have a warning system to alert them you're coming really shows that you ARE the best that humanity has. kinda like the doom slayer, if he was encased in 900 tones of metal, weapons and thrusters.

Axelay was no doubt a technically and artistically accomplished showpiece, featuring some of the very best graphics and sound of any consumer home game for a brief moment in time. But in terms of gameplay, it was just merely okay. Super Aleste was much better in that regard.

I’ve tried this one before and found it incredibly difficult.
But I’m going to try it again. I love Gaiares to death and other people say that game is almost impossible.
And you seem to share my passion about Gaiares. So I guess I owe it to myself to try and let Axelay win me over.

Not mode 7. It’s line scrolling hdma raster effects.
Mode 7 is a graphic mode (the eighth as 0 is the first, of the 8 options available). The mode uses a single background layer which can be scaled and rotated. The sprite layer makes for two layers on that mode. The sprite layer can be behind the bg layer.
Nice sign off. There will inevitably be less creative games. I don’t think so.

It's really funny to me how this came out the same year as RECCA. Especially with how much faster recca is, and how it was for the famicom.

Video claim :"The SNES could not compete with the Genesis in Shoot'em Ups"
Axelay, Starfox, Pop'N Twinbee, Super Aleste, Parodius > any Megadrive shooter
Contra III, Super Star Wars 1-3, Super Turrican > Contra Hard Corps, E-SWAT, etc
Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, Sonic 1 and 2, Streets of Rage 1-3, Revenge of Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, Aladdin were among the few top Megadrive Genesis games that could compete with the SNES games line-up literally filled with a multitude of gems back in the days.

      Madden titles, all the NHL,
      NBA titles play better on
genesis. Hell even the crappy batman forever plays better on genesis.🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

Sigh... I had high hopes for this video but you literally started out by perpetuating the same uninformed misconceptions people have regarding shooters on the SNES. The best SNES shooters easily blow away what is available on the Genesis and even equal and in some ways surpass the Turbo Grafx 16's best. Obviously the Turbo has far more numerically, but quality over quantity wins out.
Not only Axelay, but R-Type 3 and Space Megaforce have no equal. If you don't talk about games that never made it to the states though, you're really selling all of these systems short. Rendering Ranger R2, Super Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie, Pop 'n' Twinbee, and the 3 Parodius games are just a few top tier shooters we never got over here.

I totally agree. I had a Megadrive launch day here in Australia after owning a master system so I definately have lots of nostalgia for Sega but even UN squadron and super r type easily beat any Megadrive shoot em up in my opinion and I absolutely love Axelay as well. The Megadrive is worth owning just for the first two streets of rage and the first two sonic games along with Revenge of Shinobi, 3 and shadow dancer are also good.
