I tried it last year with a bunch of shoping bags just to see if it would work and boy did it!
I also put a wire fence at the support and put some beans in the buckets, hoping they will shade the greenhouse a little in the summer.
Thank you for the inspiration and all the tipps. Happy gardening from Brandenburg!

I got converted to growing potatoes in containers after watching a video of yours many years ago and I ALWAYS managed to spear the largest tuber with a fork when growing directly in the ground. . I find using the thick top mulch (I use straw) greatly reduces the watering frequency and also surface weeds. Ease of harvesting is the winner for me plus storage over winter by removing the haulms and keeping the containers dry will allow harvests to continue during the hungry gap 👍

I've grown spuds in containers for years and if some folks on here think it's easier to dig trenches and then dig the spuds up, you don't know what you're missing. I've used my 55L containers for the past 12 years or so and they're as good as new.I now use 35L pots in my polytunnel for tomatoes and cucumbers. Yes, they take a lot of compost to fill them but you re use the compost time and time again. I make 3 cubic yards of compost in my allotment every year, so plenty for the garden.

Saw your video on this method 3 years ago, bought 10 of the containers you use , was impressed with the method & now have 40.
Growing medium is cheap commercial compost, mixed 50/50 with my own compost & I mix in either Growmore or blood, fish & bone, as there's no difference in results between them & potato fertiliser.
My first earlies (Swift) are just coming through & the last of my Charlotte went in yesterday.
I really like the 'spent' compost which comes at the end of potato growing, as it's more broken down & weed free, so I riddle off a couple of hundred litres & use it for next years seed & potting.

In videos that show her method, and an actual film of her planting in her own garden. She basically places potatoes on the bare ground then just covers them with straw and that’s it. She was a fascinating woman (RIP) and worth checking out how she did her methods growing crops in her yard. In her own words she never visited a green grocers in her life after discovering this way of growing. All the best mate. 🍻

I've got 13 30l bags already out. But five of them I started in my living room greenhouse under lights at the beginning of feb. I'm so happy with how they've come along. They've been outside over two weeks and are thriving. I've been using tree covers at night when I know there might not be clouds to protect them and so far this has worked really well to avoid damage with them being out so early. Total experiment. The more I see systems like this, the more I'm inclined to grow everything in containers instead of in the ground or raised beds. Even for tomatoes, peppers, and beans and other stuff. It's just so much simpler and easier on the spine. Just plant the seedlings in the pots in the greenhouse, and drag them out the moment the weather is agreeable to that specific plant. At the end of the harvest, just dump the buckets, add some compost, and put it right back in the buckets for the next batch.

As this is something new to me and the massive availability of store bought composts ,including garden centres, the large D.I.Y chains who all sell composts {although i know all composts are not equal having had many failures in various different brands.}
Any help , advice and recommendations are greatly appreciated, as your experiences growing vegetables and growing mediums is why you have gained the knowledge over many years experience.
I am on a very low budget, so anyway i can boost or enhance the compost is something i will consider. i just don't have the room to grow in the soil at site i am growing on.

You might have a good eye for one and a half ounces but the rest of us should probably measure! I wish you would mention the NPK ratio and other nutrients. Plus there's the unknown nutrient content of the compost. I love your recipe for success but I'm not able to replicate the results in the United States where we don't typically see blood fish and Bone or Vita x in the stores. I do get a similar yield per seed using the Mittleider method. Are you familiar with that? Thanks I love your videos.

Tony, my Lord of Potato Wisdom - gardening agony aunt😂 - how do I plant 'International Kidney' (bought because I'm a Kidney transplant recipient!😂) - Google says first Early/Second/Maincrop - so is it gonna grow on one level or all the way up? (30litre pots from Oakland😂❤).

My potatoes are producing a lot of leaves from the ground and then side shoots are growing from the leaf axils. This means that the plants are quite dense and this in turn encourages fungal diseases. Do you remove foliage that is too dense and unnecessary shoots?

@@simplifygardening Some links might be a good point of value though :D (remember, a lot of us are the guy's who don't know what we are looking for ..... or AT for that matter lol) .... Another question on the watering drip system. For those of us who don't have the space for lots of IBC totes... would it be ok to run this kind of setup from a water butt and fill the water butt with tap water (as opposed to rainwater).
I only have a 5m x 5m garden, but on the plus side it is south facing with 1.5m high brick walls, in effect a perfect growing area like a miniature walled garden. I want to maximise the space by using cold-frame-topped raised platforms and your bucket method and drip irrigation. (I was considering building a greenhouse covering the whole area and having plants grow in there for the whole season, but nobody seems to be able to give a definitive answer on whether this would be detrimental to the plants or tuber yield in the hotter part of the year)....
If you could answer any of those questions or have any hints or advice it would be most welcome.
      Best Wishes
