  • In Magic, there are currently exactly 9 card types. Each of these card types has specific rules baggage associated with it, but more importantly, they all have their own competitive histories. Some of these card types have been better than others. Today, we’re going to rank all the card types in terms of power level. To be clear, we’re talking about how good the card type is in all formats, averaging their power level in every format together, so every format should be represented.

    I would like to point out that choosing an opponent to protect it isn't inherent to battles, but to sieges specifically. We only have sieges so far, but theoretically, a battle doesn't need to be protected by an opponent or transform when the last defense counter is removed.

    Probably the most powerful part of the Artifact type is the fact its the most versatile type to combine with others: while certainly not as meta-warping as 0 cost rocks, artifact creatures and lands were what made affinity a incredibly powerful mechanic. And considering other mechanics like Double Sided and Adventure, Enchantments/Battles and Instants/Sorceries can be attached to an artifact.

      Completely ignored how All is Dust interacts with the incredibly busted Eldrazi lands though (since Eldrazi Temple and Eye of Ugin just say "Eldrazi spell", not "Eldrazi creature spell"). There are definitely examples where the creature type is mostly just flavor text outside of limited, but a 7 drop that can be cast 2+ turns early from its typeline alone isn't a great choice.
      Sort of makes sense though, with the rampant denial-ism of broken lands existing outside of Legacy/Vintage.

My only surprise is I knew Artifacts were more powerful than instants, but the main reason instants are number 2 for me is Force of Will.
    Force of Will is nearly the best card for eternal formats and surviving turn 1 kills or other outright debauchery. And you didn't mention Force at all XD haha if anything, I ALMOST put instants in first place if not solely for Force. GG though this video was awesome.

  • @RollTheBonez
    @RollTheBonez Před 7 měsíci +1

    I'm pretty on board with most of the list, but I would still put lands a bit higher and swap #2 and #3. Lands are necessary in a vast majority of decks to function, barring things like manaless dredge and the like. I feel like that at least gives them the number 4 spot. Concerning instants and creatures, just look at the actual wincons of most decks. As a Vintage player you have Lurrus, Doomsday, Oath, Initiative, Bazaar, Shops, and so on. All of these have creature based wincons and a lot are just generally creature focused. Instants are indeed strong, but creatures win games.

    • @dstreetz91
      @dstreetz91 Před 7 měsíci

      Yeah lands I would put over creatures and sorceries with ease. The amount of utility lands offer both for colorfixing and utility defines every format. There's a reason strip mine and wasteland are usually considered some of the best cards by the best players in eternal formats. I think they're number 2 only behind artifacts and ahead of instants at 3 and creatures at 4. Sorcery as much as I love the cardtype is weaker than creatures now.

    • @Metallicity
      @Metallicity Před 7 měsíci

      As the video already conceded the point of lands only being rivaled by artifacts in eternal formats, let's instead ask the question "has WotC done better about balancing artifacts or lands in newer formats?". In terms of design philosophy, they've clearly taken steps on both, with more care given to zero cost/colorless artifacts, and to lands that can tap for more than one mana. In terms of how things played out in practice though, Pioneer serves as the best example to take a look at more recent years as a whole.
      What's the scariest artifact left in Pioneer, with Walking Ballista banned? Maybe Parhelion, but that's mostly a creature doing the heavy lifting for an uncastable 8 mana artifact. For actual, playable cards, would it be a value vehicle like Reckoner Bankbuster or Unlicensed Hearse? A cheap, narrow answer like Portable Hole or Pithing Needle? Other sideboard hate like Damping Sphere? It's not a very impressive list, with the answer possibly being something like "Bloodtithe Harvester blood tokens" or "Fable of the Mirror Breaker treasure tokens".
      Meanwhile, Lotus Field and Nykthos have plagued the format since its inception, placing various other cards on the banlist along the way, while Field of the Dead quickly got the banhammer in both Pioneer and Modern. The MDFC lands also enabled an even more broken deck in Oops All Spells, which unlike Ballista's middling combo with Heliod, is still good enough for Modern and even Legacy/Vintage (though not enough to warrant further bans). And of course there's also the pre-ban of the 5 fetch lands, whose very existence have enabled so many other broken cards and strategies that they weren't even given a shot in the format. Even with the five of them together, the banlist is probably smaller with them on there (vs. delve spells, DRS, Leyline Binding, etc.). There's really zero argument that artifacts could come out on top here.
      Comparing the entirety of broken land and artifact cards and strategies which have existed in newer formats like Standard/Historic/Pioneer/Modern/etc., and why both stand clearly above all other card types, is left as an exercise to the reader (an exercise which the video obviously neglected to do). Your response should include the phrases "Dark Depths", "Cloudpost", "Tron", "Eldrazi", "Mystic Sanctuary", "Field of the Dead", "Lotus Field", "Urza's Saga", "snow lands", "channel lands", "MDFC lands", "artifact duals", and "Mirrodin block actually only put a single artifact card on the Standard banlist (Skullclamp), setting aside the land and creature cards".

    Being able to be removed by damage is THE main weakness of Planeswalkers, as far as I know. This is why they need to perform as soon as possible, since a single swing or well-timed Bolt could remove them.
    Also, one of the most important resources that is a bit overshadowed by card advantage is tapping stuffs. Lands are the most focused in this, due to producing mana, but creatures and artifacts may be counted as well. Creatures need Haste to be able to be tapped in order to produce effects, while artifacts can just go. This is why mana rocks are usually preferred over mana dorks. (Also, damage can't remove non-creature artifacts).
    Enchantments usually can't be tapped, so they are weaker than similar artifacts.

    I don't know if I like that the land section is so focused on legacy with no mention of how good Valakut was in its stages format and how decent it is in modern even now, and how absolutely busted Field of the Dead is in many formats, primarily notable for being banned in modern. Nevermind how the Urzatron lands have enabled an entire deck for decades.
    Personally, I think lands deserve a higher place for not just being the things that allow you to play your other cards but also how often they've been the finishers of very strong decks.

    • @connorhamilton5707
      @connorhamilton5707 Před 7 měsíci +1

      No. If it was like toughness, then you would have to win the battle all at once, you wouldn't be able to slowly chip away at it until you are victorious. It would also make blocking much simpler, since you only need to block enough to not immediately have it be flipped. As it currently is, every point of damage you let through matters, so if you don't want the opponent to emerge victorious, you need to actually try to defend it.

In land slots are, obv, only bazzar + land destruction.
    Also i often see other bazar (mana less or with green), dreadge and sometimes UW stax+initiative decks.
    Also many control decks use orck archer, hullbreacher and opo agent, storm decks usually use at least displacer kitten.
    In legacy there are tone of them, my favourite is ninja deck. So i cant agree that creatures are irrelevant in old format.

    I would rate Tribal above Battles overall. Tribal is usually an irrelevant type on a card, but at the same time is not intrinsically a disadvantage, and while having flavor issues that lead to it being discontinued, it had a definition, and a flexibility that allowed it to go on a variety of cards and effects (as seen by the two most succesful ones, All is Dust and Bitterblossom).
    Battles, on the other hand, lack that. There is not a clear definition of what a battle actually is or how it works. We don't have battles, we have SIEGES, and all the rules we have are specifically for sieges, with battle as a whole existing undefined and with no space.
    Sieges then exist as basically worse enchantments for their mana cost, as that's how they have to be designed for a payoff that is difficult to achieve (and usually the decks that can achieve it easily are the ones that have better things to play). It also has similar flavor issues to Tribal, since it's unclear what makes a card a "battle" rather than an enchantment, since we did have battles already appear on magic cards, in an iconic enchantment cycle back in Tarkir. The SIEGE cycle. Making siege existing as a different, worse card type, baffling to say the least.

    Personally, Tribal and Instant should be supertypes like legendary or snow. I know its too late to change now, but tribal just giving the ability to have creature types and instant being flash (so right now an instant would be an instant sorcery). Not a huge deal and would require a ton of erratas to change now (especially “activate as a sorcery” might have to be “This ability is not instant”) but it is a weird annoyance to me.

    I'm still confused about the flavor of Battles -- i.e. Siege. Presumably when I play a Siege I am putting an opponent under siege -- which is why I am attacking the Battle. In that case the person playing the battle is the invader and the opponent is the defender. But the backsides of battles are defenders of the plane (e.g. in Invasion of Tarkir you get Defiant Thundermaw who is a dragon from Tarkir fighting a Phyrexian in the artwork), so it doesn't make sense that the person who played the Siege is the invader because they get the defender.
    So, is the player who plays the Siege the player under siege? And attacking the Battle under an opponents control a counter offensive? Which is why you get the backside? But why call the Subtype a Siege then? It doesn't seem like the player who played the Battle is initiating the battle. Is this just a commentary on the nature of war? That the aggressors and defenders in an abstract concept inapplicable to the complexities of the real world? Why am I engaging in battle with my opponent? Did I invade Zendikar for two measly basic lands? Am I the monster?

    • @connorhamilton5707
      @connorhamilton5707 Před 7 měsíci

      It's because of how subtypes work. Subtypes require an applicable card type to exist on the card, and if you lose that card type, you lose the associated subtypes.
      And while it's possible to change the rules to allow subtypes to be attached to supertypes, that comes with issues such as how supertypes are very difficult to remove, which extends to making the associated subtypes difficult to remove. And all of that would only matter for Tribal (soon to be Kindred), a mostly obsolete part of the game so far. While the change to Kindred at the very least implies more support in the future, it would at the very least be a little weird to change the rules to support it as a supertype, making subtypes work differently to accommodate one thing.

    I really don't understand putting lands at 5. Like why do you use the argument that "a deck of nothing but lands cant do anything" to knock it down to 5, but then not apply that same logic to the other card types? i.e. a deck of 60 instants or 60 sorceries would be unplayable, whereas at least you can play lands and eventually start animating creature lands to win. Lands should be 1 or 2, as you can probably make a playable deck using 60 artifacts.

But the nine listed are the ones that are actually options to put into your deck and all of the others (appart from dungeons) are part of special formats. I think that dungeons should at least have been given an honourable mention as a card type as out of all of the other types of cards, as technically all of the dungeons are available in every mtg game and they have actually had a big impact on a lot of formats.

    > Calls enchantments one of the rarest card types
    > They have 10 times more than planeswalkers
    Only been like 5 relevant planeswalkers ever... the order of those two is baffling.

    • @dstreetz91
      @dstreetz91 Před 7 měsíci

      Enchantments are weak. 5 relevant planeswalkers ever is format dependent like in vintage maybe it's 5 ever, but in standard planeswalkers that have been relevant number in the dozens. Even among the debut 5 walkers in Lorwyn 4 of them saw play the only one that wasn't that good was Chandra Nalaar.

    • @Metallicity
      @Metallicity Před 7 měsíci

      Even in Vintage there are plenty of relevant planeswalkers: Karn, Narset, T3feri, Oko, Minsc & Boo, Wrenn and Six, Grist, plus the more old timers of Dack and Jace, and more fringe options like WAR Saheeli/Dovin/Ashiok and DOM Karn. Twice as many restricted planeswalkers as restricted enchantments, despite as you point out being the much rarer card type. Enchantment is pretty much universally agreed to be the worst evergreen card type, especially among the permanent types (which are a bit easier to compare).

      Equipment is a subtype of artifact just like aura is a subtype of enchantments, it is basically the aura of artifacts.

    why does magic persistently make auras weak. you lose a card to use them so they should all atleast be double their strengths to compensate.
    like 1 mana gives creature 5/5. or enchantland then beginning of upkeep heal 4 life and create 2 1/1 tokens and draw a card. AND for not high mana cost like maybe 3 mana.
    they just in general need to make auras stronger no one uses them.
    or for 1 mana. enchant creature if damage opponent they disacrds 2 cards at random. and creature gains pay 1 black to gain shadow until end of turn.
    ‐-----------
    as far as lands my favorites are ones that come into play and heal you like radiant fountain and kabira crossroads etc.
    also i love lands that turn into creatures like mutavault. westvale abby. lair of the hydra. crawling barrens.
    particularly i use them in decks loaded with board wipe. and against board wipe. even if game is late game a got a hoard of lands that can swing for damage on opponent. giving me more options.
    ---‐------
    as far as artifacts i agree. is why most of my side boards has artifact hate. cards like stony silence and katakis wars wage. creeping corrosion. shattering spree. meltdown. steelbane hydra. aberrant. pest infestation. heliods intervension. etc.
    also i used alot of board wipes so that helps.
    i agree most poweful cards is artificacts is why most of my decks contain some artifact hate in them.

      I guess just like in any card game they assume I'd they do up the Aura facet by giving them better stats or proper protection it would heavily shift the meta of the game. But honestly wotc and the Hasbrouck been power creeping with their new universes beyond sets so maybe they just don't care right now.

      ok now im confuced. like yeah there is no lands deck in modern. but dark deps is still banned so they ned a ban. not suere what are the factors but you need lands and even if they do a minimal role i think its realy powerfull. just looking at urzas saga a second. how ever i think i took this list way to serius ^^

    • @dstreetz91
      @dstreetz91 Před 7 měsíci

      Played doesn't mean the cardtype is strong. Most tribal cards are garbage same with most enchantments. Tribal and battle card types were always going to be low though because they have almost no cards against the likes of lands, creatures, artifacts, etc. that have thousands of cards.
