Helix 3.50 - Dialing in a Preset

  • I've been asked a few times to do an entire preset build in one video, so here it is, including many of the new amp and effects models we were given in the latest Helix 3.50 update. I used the new PV Vitrol (Peavey Invective) amp model and spent a lot of time discussing the new cab software. Also very fun to work with was the new Dynamic Ambience block, which lets us get closer to that "amp in the room" feel. This preset was designed on the HX Stomp XL, but I created it with the original HX Stomp in mind.
    Check out the free download on CustomTone below:

    Since building the preset, I've added a light, always-on compressor at the end of the chain, assigned the phaser to footswitch 6, a 3db boost to footswitch 7, and volume control to expression 2. Original Stomp users can still use this preset, but HX Stomp XL users will have a bit more control.

    Super clever ways to get the most out of each switch! I never would have thought of this stuff, particularly the 2 overdrives combined to make the delay work. Impressive!

    Hey Ale, when you're level matching do you have the volume knob on the stomp all the way up?

    It's cool, with the Dynamic Ambience when the Mix is turned up it really sounds like the amp is in the back of your room and it's being picked up by your mic (gonna feel stupid if this is what was actually happening lol).

      Using the Dynamic Ambience block for the room sound and ALSO as a typical reverb is a great idea... stealing this.

      Would've been a great idea to demonstrate that way!

    The 3.50 Update is awesome, and it's useful seeing a complete walk through on how dial in a Preset. What do you think about first dialing in the Cab, and then refining the tone with the Amp Parameters? Since you first dial in the tone on Headphones, do you just use the "Global Settings" to dial in your tone for the particular venue?
    Yesterday, I came across the "Glossary" Factory Preset, which has a beautiful, complex ambient sound, particularly on slow open voiced (root, 5th, 3rd) chords. It adds octaves and reverse reverb, which is stunning. Turning down the mix on the Reverb can tame the effect, if needed. I'm sure you'll like it.
    How did the Orchestral gig go? Hope you were able to have fun.

      I still have to explore the new factory presets - haven't gotten to do that yet. Usually I just get the amp tone roughed in before I mess with the cab settings. Once the cab is set, I go back to the amp model to refine it - just like I did in this video. If the amp isn't at least in the ballpark of what I'm going for, the cab settings I choose may be overcompensating so that's why I go back and forth like that.
      The Pittsburgh Symphony gig was incredible - definitely a highlight in my life this far. The music was actually pretty easy on my part, I was mostly stressing about making a dumb mistake counting rests or something. Once I got in there and met the conductor and the rest of the rhythm section, it felt like any other house band gig.

      @@AlexPriceMusician Congrats on the Pittsburgh Symphony gig. I knew it would go well. You're a Pro.

    Hey Alex, love your videos. You have really helped to demystify this tech, and that is much appreciated. I have recently updated my HX Stomp to 3.5, but I have heard several mention the value of doing a factory reset to actually get the new presets(using new models, etc). Aside of backing up my current presets, is there anything unique to 3.5 that I'll need to do, or can I just hold down all the footswitches on power up?

    • @AlexPriceMusician
      @AlexPriceMusician  Před rokem

      Nope, just a simple file -> create backup in HX Edit is enough. Hold down switches 2+3 while your unit powers up and it'll reload with all of the new stock presets. Once you're finished with that, explore them and export a few from HX Edit that you want to save before restoring from your backup.

    Are your presets only for humbuckers??

    • @AlexPriceMusician
      @AlexPriceMusician  Před rokem +1

      I usually create two versions of the same preset - one for single coils, one for humbuckers

      😂 Most of the time they're all the way down, but I do use them occasionally. Maybe it's due for a video?
