I loved this video. Direct and the critical teaching points were so well delivered. Nice job.
Hi Katelyn, you must try a setting for your focusing which I believe is superior and quicker. Like you I came form a 5DIV and have an R5 but the focusing system is identical to the R6. Step one, switch to servo. Use face/eye detection and tracking for your focusing setting. Select focus priory to tracking so you get a focus square appear in the viewfinder. So what’s the difference? You are going to “Track” and recompose instead. Simply pick your face or subject to track by placing the focus square over the subject and where ever they go in the frame the focus is locked on them as it is tracking all the time whether they come closer or move away. Game changer at f1.2. This is particularly helpful when there are multiple faces in the scene too and you want it to stick on one person only and not jump around. It is so much quicker than touch and drag. There is no benefit now in using One Shot anymore as tracking is so impressive. One other thing you may want to try is I shoot for some of the time at least in Auto ISO so it is essential to have quick access to the exposure compensation. So I have this set to the control ring and it is so quick to half press the shutter and turn this to over or under expose to taste. Incidentally, I have this set to 2/3 of a stop under by default to help protect the highlights and dress detail as shadow recovery is so incredible now. Hope that was useful but give it a go.
I tried face tracking servo during processional and it wasn't able to focus on the face while it was moving so I chose one point. Alao maybe because the groom is still far away it couldnt detect or perhaps all the faces of the guests are in the frame that makes it confusing. Any tips on how to tackle moving shots with face tracking?
Yes! That touch and drag option is one of the most helpful and amazing features of the camera! I will never ever worry about my EXACT point of interest being in focus again.
My R6 just arrived, and this video was SO helpful in getting me all set up and feeling confident in trying it out. I LOVE having a quicker way to change Kelvin!! Thank you :)
Thanks so much! I am in the market for a new camera and all of the options are overwhelming! I currently use a Nikon d3500 with a 50mm and it has served me well getting my business up and running. Now I really want to take it to the next level. I’ve always heard great things about canon and the amazing color and quality of images so I think I want to make the jump. I have my first wedding in 11 months (eek!) and your reviews of this camera are putting the r6 on the top of the list!
Just upgraded to the R6 yesterday and yes! Touch&drag is life-changing! Having a lot of trouble using the dials with any kind of speed but touch&drag just came naturally.
This was so helpful, thank you for making such a relatable video!
Very interesting Katelyn, thank you for this insight - please keep the vlogs coming
Ordered mine and it just arrived. Can't wait to use it at my first wedding! Gonna practice before then. Your R6 videos have been very helpful.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! :) I'm so excited; this is the best setting. You are so right; the wheels were so confusing. LOVE!!!
Brilliant video, just seen your channel for the first time, very much looking forward to getting more of an insight to the R6, I think it’s going to be a reasonably priced working pro’s camera for years and years to come!
Mind blown!! I just cracked my EOS R5 out of the box and I was so stressed out with how to focus this baby. As a portrait photographer this is exactly what I needed to know to modify the AF method to how I shoot with my Mark IV. Thank you thank you thank you!! I’m an so excited for the touch and drag feature.
Thanks for these R6 vids, I ordered mine and can't wait to get my hands on it!
Love listening to you explain things. Your videos alone have made me take the plunge and go for the R6. Now to wait for it to come in stock and ship!
Anthony, I had really good luck finding one at Best Buy and I’ve read of others with the same experience. I found one online the first time I looked and I had it in my hands 3 days later. Good luck!
@@karenstershic6286 Hi Karen. I was actually really close to buying one at best buy, but they only had the one with the kit lens which I don't need, plus the taxes added another 200. I have a pre-order at BH expected to ship next week, and went with them for tax free plus free expedited shipping. I ordered the RF adapter as well which already shipped. Thank you for the heads-up though, hope you're enjoying yours!
This was SO helpful! I just got my R6 today and I'm terrified to learn the new system! But this makes me feel better :)
Great video, I just got the R6. Thank you for great tips. I haven't had a chance to see your other videos yet on the R6. I watched one from another CZcamsr that also showed me how to set back button to be face when I press it, and when I use your method I have the best of both worlds! Face when I want it and focus point drag when I do other shots! Thank you!
this is so great, thank you for the transparency and education!!
Thank you very much, ma! Been looking for this.
Great video. I enjoyed your insights. I'm just coming from Nikon so I set my dials up like a Nikon camera, top dial, Aperture, the rear top dial is shutter speed and I did the rear wheel as ISO. Like you said, everyone has to set the camera up in a way that is right for them. Thank you, great job.
This was extremely helpful. I am loving your content and how you express your learning and experiences. I look forward to seeing more. I would love see more of your tips, techniques, and skills as I'm getting back into things and learning once again. Thank you.
I should have recording my reaction to trying out the touch and drag lol ITS SO COOL!!! Thank you so much for this video! I just got mine and am heading to do a bridal session and this was super helpful
I’ve had my camera for a few months & finally now I’m making time to educate myself with your videos.
Great Info. I love my R6. Best Camera on the market. Great in low light too. Thanks for the tips...
Im going to be renting this camera for two weddings in October!!! Thanks for this settings review so I can get the hang of it quickly!
Thanks for watching! Here is the link to sign up for a free trial of KJ All Access! geni.us/kj-all-access-trial
I started in film a little over a decade ago before switching to digital, so being able to set the control ring to adjust aperture sounds like just about the best thing ever!
Phenomenal! Your setup works very well for me. Thanks for the content!
@@KatelynJames Question about the touch focus. I've been using it the way you demonstrated in your videos, and it generally works great but I found that sometimes outdoors it's hard to see. Have you found that to be a problem?
Thnx for sharing your style. The R6 is proving to be a very versitile body allowing for multiple ways of shooting. I am finding no 1 style is ideal for all situations. I believe touch and drag only works when eye is in viewfinder and many mirrorless shooters I see on YT prefer to use the back lcd.
This video came at the most perfect time for me, I just rented the r6 and have a wedding tomorrow! Love ALL of your videos so much! Thank you, Katelyn!
Love your videos. Brilliant. I am now ready to buy the R6....thank you. Happy New Year. My gift to myself...2021.
Thank you so much! I was a professional wedding photographer for a long time and then got out of the game, let my gear and my skills get stale so when I upgraded recently to the R6 i've had no clue how to set it up to make the most of its new technology.
Great video, just bought the r6 !
did anyone ever tell you you are as articulate as f? absolute natural.
Good video! I decided to keep the top dial for ISO and use the control ring for Kelvin.
I am a 1 dx shooter i have the 1-2-& 3 thanks to your tips and information i just bought me R6 can't wait to add it to what i do.. thanks for sharing all your amazing information.
I came to the R6 bodies from the Canon 5DMark3 bodies, without ever upgrading to the 5DMark4 bodies.. and for the first time, going back to the Canon D30, I finally have a real use for the Depth of Field button..! :-) I have that set to select the format, which provides a 1.6 Crop in a second, giving me much tighter 3:2 framing flexibility, which comes in handy when capturing candids. Cheers!
Just a note to the ones who are excited about the idea of the touch and drag....if you have small hands (like myself) you'll more than likely have to use your other hand to touch and drag when looking through the camera. Thanks for the video Katelyn it really helped me out!
This is me. Tiny hands so it’s taking a while to get used to how I will do this fast enough!
Im saving for the r6 and to be honest never really delved into a lot of stuff my mk4 had to offer,so intend to change that with the r6.New cameras scare me as im not familiar with them but with your videos im confident i can do better.
I just got the r6 and a point about the touch/drag and focus/recomposing. I would say that touch/drag is not the reason that makes focus/recomposing become obsolete (or that it was alluded to be) . It would be that the r6's whole sensor is practically a focus point (6,072 points to be exact) while the mark iv's 61 focus points forces you to recompose if your desired focus point is out of the selectable field range. I prefer the joy stick on the r6 as I notice a much more fluid movement across the sensor. Note the joystick for focus is turned off by default (turn on by going to menu tab 6 subtab 3 under customize buttons)
Thanks for sharing! I just signed up for kj all access and I'm loving it
I LOOOOVEEE the touch and drag! It's the most amazing thing I've ever experienced and it makes EVERYTHING almost too easy! So cool that I can say I'm now shooting with the same camera that Katelyn James is ahhhh.
So incredibly helpful.
What are your favourite budget friendly lenses (must-have) for portrait photography?
Plz do a video on shutter speeds etc, this video helped me out a lot!!!!
I recommend to get the RF 50m f/1.2 L USM.
It is so much better in every aspect than the old EF version.
Hey Katelyn, great video. I was curious to why you need a speed dial for white balance? I’m new to wedding photography so I could use the trick if I knew what it’s uses are.
i set eyedetection on my af-butten, so i can switch from af-point to eyedetection with one klick 😉
i use AF on always. that way no matter what af point, subject will be focused before you even hit the shutter button. it uses more battery but with that i rarely use bbf now too.
Hi Katelyn , Thank you for the video . I have tried the touch & drag but I can not get on with it , mainly because I look through the view finder with my left eye . Can I ask if you use the single small square or the small square with the smaller square inside . Thanks
I use 2 Canon 5DIII's at weddings, at the same time, one with a 35 mm, other one with a 85 mm. It's very important to sync both cameras so if you sort the pics by date taken, it is right
True! I only ever shoot with one camera at a time so I don't need to worry about this as much but it's definitely important!
@@KatelynJames I don't want to switch lenses in the church and loose time or a special moment. For the outdoor shoots or the bride getting ready, it's not so important
Touch + Drag! YES YES YES
wish I near your place, so I can learn from the real situation and location. such a helpful video though..
I’ve been using the touch and drag focus as well but it’s using up the battery pretty fast so I’m thinking I should switch to another method
Hi Katelyn. I'm an amateur and I've been enjoying your videos to see how a professional works. I have an R6 that's set up for typical family use. I shoot in manual raw and my ISO is normally auto but that leaves me fiddling with the exposure compensation dial. So I guess I have three variables (Tv Av and compensation) the same number you have with Tv Av and ISO. I think I'll try it your way!
Same here, I find the rear top dial works perfect for adjusting my ISO, so I don't really have to rely on auto ISO that much any more.
Hello Kate, i staring my hobbies with canon r6 so could you show us all your photography setting that help us for photoshoo.
Love this video!! I just got an R6 and its soooo new for me. Do you ever use the live view setting and if so, when? 😀
Touch and drag is amazing. In my experience the only few times that it gets stuck it's because my nose is touching the screen. So all I have to do is remove my nose and it works again
Oh thank God it’s not just me!! I just rented the r6 before purchasing and was geeking out over Katelyn’s discussion of the touch and drag. Well, I shoot way more vertical than horizontal and as soon as I tried this, my nose had the focus point zig zagging alllll over the screen. LMAO! Which is unfortunate because it’s not possible to select a different area of the touch screen, such as upper left or lower left or even lower right. Because that would require using left hand (already holding lens and camera) or putting your right thumb down and around your face. Boooo I’m so bummed. But I do love the camera’s sharpness! I just disabled the touch screen and it seems pretty similar in feel and function as my Mark 4.
I can't believe KJ can reach the entire screen with her right thumb. I never thought my thumbs were short until watching this video. I can't reach most of the screen with right thumb while holding the camera in my right hand. Lol at myself!!
For me, the backup images to separate SD cards is the most valuable R6 setting for my wedding photography.
Thank you your courses have given me such knowledge and confidence. I the near horizon is a R6. Like Saturday!!
Hi thanks for your amazing video, I have a question my camera was second hand so when i go to the M-Fn section it has been selected to the focus option but I don't know where I can change it, I cant seem to find it in the menu. can you help me. thank you for your time.
Hi Katelyn. First I would love to say I just love your CZcams channel I look for something new all the time! Thank you!
The adapter ring Dial adjusts kelvin. ISO dial still adjusts ISO sorry if I made that sound confusing!
Love all of your videos!!! Did you adjust the screen brightness. Factory setting is 4. Thanks
Hi Katelyn, great video, planning on picking one up shortly. How do I get everyone in a group shot in focus? Is there a setting that allows the camera to automatically focus on multiple people at the same time or allow manual selection of all the faces that need focusing before taking the pic?
Hi! When do you use eye tracking then? Also, do you always have SERVO on even with the focus and drag method?
Hi guys, I have the control ring set for exposure and shoot with the hystagram in the evf. It's a great way to make sure you don't blow out the highlights..
@@KatelynJames just make sure you have it set that it's locked until you half press the shutter button.. works a treat
Tranks for this great video! How many batteries do you need on a whole wedding day with the r6? :)
Katelyn,
Nice video! Are you not using eye-tracking at all? It is so amazing. Are you giving up use of the flip out screen when using touch and drag?
Thank you Katelyn, for sharing. Have you had any images printed from the R6?
I am also shocked you don't like the Face recognition feature and eye detection! They really are great, but getting the hang of them is a step learning curve
Thanks for this video! super helpful when setting up my R6! :) what setting do you use for movement? I did the touch and drag focus for my first family session yesterday and the walking photos are blurry. :(
Thanks in advance for your help! I appreciate it more than you know
I love this so much. I’m wondering how do you capture focus with this camera when you have a moving subject? Bride and groom walking towards you, motion, etc?
Set the autofocus to Servo Af, people, eye detection and Af method to tracking and then head over to menu 4 and choose setting 4 for moving subjects or read that menu setting and play with it for best performance that suits you; I usually have customized one of the button to jump between servo and one shot and another button to AF single point incase tracking failed on me; keep in mind focal length play a huge rule in this so the closer the subject the better the tracking so eventually you will have to switch between the two frequently so set the camera in a way that helps switching quickly and the more you use it the more it will become second nature; you can honestly customize this camera to you shooting style as well a great tip is to customize your c1 -c3 in one of those i use 1.6 crop and you have no idea how amazing this could be as with the crop i can grab focus and then switch back to full frame and take the shoot so there are many ways but this camera is fantastic
Processional and recessional: Servo. But in portrait I am still using one shot mode (for right now)
@@KatelynJames I believe it is the best option for portrait as well there is no need for servo but i shoot street and servo works faster for snapping shoots otherwise one point AF is for the rest of the shooting needs and still i use one point AF in all situations finer controls for sure
I set my Main Dial for Aparture, Quick Control Dial 2 for my Shutter, Quick Control Dial 1 for my Iso and Control Ring for my Kelvin
Why did you set Kelvin adjustment on both the quick control dial 2 and the control ring? Have you tried the RF 28-70mm F2?
Touch and drag is great but i find relative to better than absolute, as it is more accurate and act like a touchpad
Hi Katelyn, Have you ever used the Drop in ND filter adaptor ? if you have can you possibly give some feed back on it ? I have really enjoyed all of your Videos regarding the R6 and will be getting one for myself because of your High rating of it :
Thank you for another great video on R6. Subscribed! How durable is the touch screen? Do you feel you need to put a clear shield over it?
It seems to be the same as all other Canon cameras! The nice thing about the R6 is that you can flip the screen around when it's in your bag so the screen isn't exposed at all! That alone should prevent scratches!
You are amazing. Love everything you do and how practical you are in your videos! A million times over THANK YOU!!!
