Aux belt with chunks of the ribs missing. The noise is the belt jumping on the water pump pulley. I’ve done a few of these engines now with a similar noises . Just worth checking before jumping in head first 👍
that noise is the auxiliary belt tensioner knocking against the crank pulley due to the belt having sections of the ribbing missing. easy repair cost around £20.00 regards Kevin @ Palmer Works mini specialist centre Mereworth
as soon as I heard it, I said the exact same thing... My renault megane CC used to have the same issue.
@@68404 If you watched the second video, you will have seen the state of the belt.
Thank you for a very interesting video. Being a relative of the previous owner's family, I appreciate the respectful way the seller is referred to. I'll be eagerly watching updates and will be very interested to see how you give it a new lease of life for someone. Well done!
They are such decent blokes. Sometimes the jobs they undertake make me break out in a cold sweat- They are both smart cookies. Just don't tell them!
Check the water pump pulley and the alternator belt if they are breaking up or missing bits from the rubber coating on the pulley then it sounds like bottom end knock.
Take the auxiliary belt off and release the ratchet mechanism that connects the crankshaft pulley to the water pump. They are prone to failing and sound like the engine is knocking away. The rubber around the water pump pulley breaks up and sounds horrendous. All the best and as always enjoy your videos 👍👍
If I remember correctly, it's the ' Prince ' engine also found in the Citreon DS3 THP. They do suffer badly with carbon build up on the valves. Also oil starvation issues, and cam chain tensioner problems. Such a same as a stunning car, I hope you save it.
Mileage is an easy one, its been done in KM's and written in miles, can happen randomly when updated or checked, switches to km's so has to be switched back to miles, just do a km to miles conversion to check.
It also explains why the line in the graph follows the same trajectory on othe sides of the "dip". If it was clocked, the line after the drop in miles would sit lower.
Lots of great advice on the comments. What a great fan base you’ve built guys. Top stuff
Really wanted this to be a longer video cos this is gonna be intresting
Also I remember when Chris didn't want to be on camera....now its like he is the main presenter
Nice 1 guys
in case you or anyone is curious, the engine that you didnt know about at 13:43 is actually a fiat FIRE 1.2 8v engine. same engine in the fiat 500, punto, panda, and ford ka. also the same engine i happen to have.
We have a RCZ 16THP Auto, 13 plate. A few years ago at 18k miles the timing chain started going out. We had it changed long before it others noted it. Timing chains for this engine go a long time before they are supposed to but yours sounds like the aftermath of a faulty timing chain. The car still turns heads. Great videos, thanks.
Definitely try removing the aux belt & water pump tensioner. I’ve done loads of these and they’ve sounded exactly the same as the RCZ in the video!
We had one that sounded that bad and it was only the fan belt falling apart and the backwards water pump tensioner slapping about like a mad man with a hammer 😂
Take the auxbelt off, had plenty of these ‘ Prince ‘ engines sound like they’re dead when the aux belt falls apart or the water pump tensioner/ water pump rubber pulley. Water pump isn’t always engaged so the noise will come and go
Aux belt damage.. Had same on mini.. New belt stopped noise instantly
"" it needs a new engine", Chris says hold my Starbucks.
Nah , mine is a $1. 7/11 coffee
cos l don't mind it.....it's cheap
& taste ok.
As others have said, I would be checking round the aux belt and such, water pump, aircon pump and so on, I once had an aircon pumpo sound very similar that was knackered. Always worth a try just taking it off and giving it a minute run time.
Pop the alternator belt off and fire it up.. had a mini where it sounded just like that and it was either the alternator or idler o can’t remember
Looks very nice, look forward to seeing you guys get in depth on this one
Check the water pump pulley as is friction driven and the rubber falls apart making it sound really bad and as has been said it only engages the tensioner when engine has warmed up
Two things to check on these is is the chain tensioner and the chain guides as these suffer badly with these issues. Also Peugeot offered two variants of this engine, being the 156bhp and the 200bhp engine, normally the 200bhp engines came with a little plaque bolted on the rocket cover with THP 200 written on it so that tells me you have got the 156bhp variant. Also one thing to note if you end up taking the engine out of this, Peugeot advise to strap the front of the vehicle to the ramp due to the car being so light weight. I used to work in a Peugeot garage when these things very first came out so I can remember the kinds of trouble these were plagued with.
Guys, really enjoyed the video. Its the loose timing chain rattling off the plastic cover, needs a timing chain kit. They stretch.
Hi from uk guys👋👍 cant wait to see the teardown on this on and hopefully the damage is concentrated and spread with use and heat cycle but cant wait guys👍👌 thanks for your time and be safe see you soon👍👋
Hi Rob and Chris, I do like the RCZ, unusual and getting rarer. Looking forward to see where you go with this in the future. Alex.
The very best way to end the start of the week with a Salvage Rebuilds video 🤣
Nice looking car and well worth a save. Short and sweet video but perfect length for what it was. Always a pleasure watching content on this channel, thanks for all your continued efforts keeping us amused, entertained and educated, stay safe Gents, Cheers 👍🏽🙂
This thing has such a cool roofline and backglass, the kind of cars we don’t get up here in Canada. Have a good one to you both!
This month's Car mechanic magazine has done a full article on these RCZ's. Including the problems your one has. Worth a look to help you out!!😎👍
The infamous ‘Prince’ engine with a single, as opposed to duplex timing chain. My local Citroën specialist has a DS3 Racing in with a fubar engine due to chain issues.
I believe the mileage was added in Kilometre at some point and then in Miles again..that explains and also if you convert makes sense
Hello Rob and Chris, another great video and a nice looking car.
“It’s a wrap”, is Chris’s new catch phrase.
I’m sure you will find an engine.
Thank you for taking the time to upload another video.Ged
Sweet looking motor 😍 looking forward to see the repair on it then back on the road hopefully 😀 good luck lads.
Love to see this one repaired and back on the road👍
Great buy for the channel as you say not many about now, will look forward to the strip down diagnosis and rebuild! Also looking forward to the Audi A1 video, the white one,I seem to recall, bent front chassis rails, now it’s off the jig, I guess that’s what you were referring to! Thanks as always guys. Dave.
Great looking Car Rob n Chris and be great to see you sort this one and flip a nice earner !
I had a diesel one of these in Germany when they first came out. It was a lovely car and a real head turner. My missus loved driving it. The problem came to purchasing winter tyres when the cheapest I could get were around the €1500 mark. So it sat in the garage for the winter. Binned it off as soon as Spring arrived….shame it was a great car purchased new.
with Peugeot when the battery has gone flat or has been disconnected the clocks revert to KPH instead of MPH and cos the owners don't know how to change it back when they take for mot they input them in as kmh instead of mph as all they are interested in is the numbers that's why you get the incorrect mileage
Interesting, looking forward to seeing you get this one back on the road:)
So much well intentioned advice given here. You’ve got some checking to do.
Sound like it could be the timing chain tensioner I had one that made the same noise when cold thay are cheap and easy to change just looks like a bolt down the back of the engine just take it out and test the spring
Looking forward to this one Rob. It'll be fantastic once finished. 👍👍👍
Hi that’s a Mini Cooper s engine, check the water pump pulley they fall apart and make a right racket!!
Lovely car, looking forward to seeing this repaired
Check the auxiliary belt aswell on this ! I had one with bits of the belt shredded and it sounded terrible! The water pump runs off the belt on these but doesn’t engage till engine is warm! It’s a strange set up
Looks like a great motor ,first time I have seen one of these models 👍👍
Look forward to seeing you fix this one , fellers. Nice.
At least it doesn’t need panels, they are even harder to find, will be an interesting series, nice one guys 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Amazing Content on the Peugeot RCZ Coupe guys. Great work lads see you on Wednesday for another interesting video.
a few yrs back we had 3 at our garage, wasn't planned, just happened. 1 needed an electric motor for drivers seat £2500, 1, motor for passenger seat £2000, + head gasket, 1, back window, unobtainable. we made 1 good one out of the youngest car,+ sent other 2 for auction it was actually a nice driver, + sold straight away, blokes still got it 5yrs later. keep up the good work chaps !
Really looking forward to seeing this get saved properly by the Experts 👍🏻
Camchain tensioner it’s gen on the rear of the engine , can leak oil from there also there was an update for it , also know for thermostat housing to break just fyi
You just keep these excellent videos coming 👏 I don't mind how long they are I will still watch it all.
Number plate is on point 👌🏼
Aux belt, have bought a few with this engine problem and a belt cured them all. Reach in and cut belt off, start it and see if ok. Water pump is not driven all the time hence why knocking is not there all the time.
Ooooohh, can't wait to see how this one turns out! And you're right - plenty of life left in a 60 reg car, I really hope you can fix it and pass it onto somebody who will enjoy driving it.
Thank heavens that A1 is finally off the jig - any longer in the shed and it would have become a classic car!
My friend had a RCZ. Great car, they look brilliant. Be worth doing up. Good luck
Great video. I've only ever seen one of these cars in the flesh. Nice to see one on the channel. I really hope you can get it machined as I think that would be a great video in itself. Top work.👍
Looking forward to seeing Chris diagnose and fix this one. A good looking little car.
Lovely looking car, well worth fixing. Look forward to seeing this one starting 👍👍
Lovely little car, please repair it Rob and Chris 👍👍😎😎
thankyou gentlemen another interesting video with some challenging diagnostics for future content.
have a good week.,,
Hi,
Look at the water pump friction pulley...or try to find a N 18 engine...much more reliable.
It sounds like the Well known timing chain issue. Could also be part of the water pump pulley missing.
Always had a soft spot for the RCZ, such a great looking car 👌🏻
My one and only French car had an intermittent electrical fault. Finally diagnosed as part of the wiring loom running under the drivers seat rails being shorted out. Never again....! Good luck with this interesting project.
Can't wait to see Chris working his magic on this
Nice looking car Rob & Chris, look forwards to seeing what the problem is with the engine.
Hi guys had this before, check the pick up pipe in the sump, also oil filters not imploded !
Interesting!Looking forward to the sequel/s.Cheers!
I fink you are Great entertainment Rob, love this channel .
Nice looking motor lads, looking forward to the next one👍👍
Nice Peugeot one repaired hopefully next video out soon 👍 😀
Check aux belt, crank pulley and water pump tensioner
Saving another 1 from the scrap yard lads well done 👏
Quite a nice car, when it runs properly!!
With your expertise am sure you two will get it sorted.
Once again fantastic video !!
Lovely design of car and like you said Rob not many about.
If you find a knackered bearing and decide to get the crank ground and new bearings, to do the job properly requires a complete engine strip to clean the swarf from all of the oil galleries.
Great looking motor rob and not often appreciated for what it is.This will be interesting to see how this one pans out.Keep up the good work guys
Cool as always guys. Looking forward to it all as usual!!
Future classic there lads hope you can work your magic, really nice stylish motor.
Looking forward to the rebuild or swapsy as always, thnks guys
Chris is really coming out of his shell now much more confident on camera
This is going to be good. Like to see them repaired, and you guys are well up to the task.
Hi Rob and Chris, this is a car you never see much on the road,to scrap it would be a shame, fingers crossed you can find a engine or a bottom end for the RCZ Coupe.
Another great video keep it up lads
If it is the same N14/N18 chocolate teapot of an engine that they used in the Cooper S then it will likely be the timing chain and guides are lunched. You did one of those already 👍
A very nice car, great video Rob and Chris
I’ll take a bet that the bores are still good, so hopefully might get away with a complete bottom end refresh and most importantly a new oil pump. Looking forward to this one lads! Best regards 👍💪😊
That knock sounds like it could be the typical 'death rattle' from the timing chain / guides / tensioner. A common issue on the THP PSA/BMW/Mini engines. Also, make sure the oil level is correct, these engines suffer burning oil, usually 1 litre per 1000 miles on average. A couple of other things to look out for is the water pump, high pressure fuel pump and the inlet ports and valves coking up.
All the best on this build, looking forward to seeing how it goes!
Great video guys 👌
Hi Rob and Chris a good looking car and a great video thankyou take care both 😌👍
Such a cool find Rob,they do look good, good luck on the rest of the rebuild :D
Very pretty car, think the Citroen DS3 sport is the same engine, loads of those floating about .
Drop the sump and check big ends. If crank is clean you could save it with a re shell. Ive done it before successfully.
Keep up the good work lads 👌
Engine rebuild, will make great content, great video as usual guys
Would be a good idea to check the timing chain, tensioner and guides as it is a very common failure on those engines.
Looks a nice car you don’t see many on the roads well worth repairing 👍
Definitely not a big end knock mate! Sounds like the water pump idler on the side, it will only kick in when needed to run the water pump, new electric idler, water pump pulley and aux belt and will be sorted. Take the tension off the auxillary belt and the noise will go
Absolutely spot on... as the follow on video went on to show.
