In May of 1990, a delegation of CIA officers comes to Lisbon, and they're off to the races. This was the backstory of this operation. In August of 1990, Saddam invades Kuwait. These six Americans, one of whom is in possession of significant intelligence about how the Americans would plan to remove Saddam from Kuwait, are stuck in Baghdad. The Americans go to the French, the Brits, the Russians, none of them can help.
They finally go to the Poles because of Paulovich's knowledge of the professionalism of the Polish Services. He argues with the Americans that these guys could do the operation.Gromek Czempinski is sent down to Iraq. He collects these characters, gives them six fake Polish workers' overalls, six fake Polish passports with fake Polish names. Sadly, the Americans couldn't pronounce their Polish names, but that's another story. At a certain point, he douses them with Johnny Walker Black, trying to camouflage them as drunk Eastern European workers, and drives them out of Iraq in this Argo-like operation.
This creates a blood bond between the two services. It shows that the Americans have a lot of respect for Polish tradecraft, and the Poles realize they can use intelligence to tighten their bonds with Washington and accomplish their goal of entering NATO.The services then began to operate around the world. Poland, at the time in this intermission period between communism and capitalism, had bureaus and embassies in places where Americans couldn't work: Pyongyang, Tehran, Havana, and other hotspots. As UN Political Officers, they had close relations with Hezbollah in Lebanon.
They began to do operations around the world.This culminates in Poland's NATO entry, with the Poles saying, "The reason we did these operations with the Americans is because we didn't want to be seen simply as the recipient of American largess and help. We wanted to prove to the United States that we could be not just a loyal ally, but a useful ally."
This was very important in their argument with America to open NATO's doors to Poland's accession, in addition to the Czech Republic and other countries.The Americans accepted this. They understood because of Poland's position in having all these diplomatic places around the world and in Poland's excellence at human intelligence work, they could use the Poles as well.

I think what Russian sympathizers don't understand about NATO is how difficult it is for the alliance to expand. Every time a new member is added, Greece and Turkey have to agree on something.

I think most Westerners don't realize that most American Military Veterans would rather the US got out of NATO and closed most of our foreign bases.
We no longer send our sons to serve. That's why the US military can't recruit. Anyone counting on American Military might to secure them is retarded or on the take.
That's only when actually joining nato. They can still ally themselves with nato and receive benefits that way. They just aren't protected by them.

i honestly hate that everyone uses the word "Expansion" when it comes to NATO. since it implies that NATO Expanded itself trough malicious means. But none of the countries Russia claimes NATO has "expanded" into, did it involuntarily. All of them wanted to join NATO due to their history with russia. It was those countries that resulted in the Growth of NATO. If Russia had better international relations with its neighbours, NATO would not have grown.

Russians have a sore spot when it comes to Poland's joining of NATO. They claim Poland was forced into NATO but really Poland essentially blackmailed then-president Bill Clinton because he was previously extremely hesitant to let Poland join. Polish representatives said if Clinton didn't allow Poland to join NATO, they'd fund the Republican opposition's campaign and then make their appeal to them if they got into office. Clinton quickly changed his mind after that.

All former soviet countries or satellites that are currently in NATO pushed hard on every occasion they had, some for more then a decade, to join NATO.

Poland begged, pleaded, threatened to develop their own nuclear program, and eventually threatened Bill Clinton with funding opposition election campaigns because he refused to let them join. Poland wasn't coerced or forced into NATO by anybody, they brute forced their way in.
Joining Nato was something we Polish people asked for. My late grandma was crying with teas of joy when we finnaly joined back in 1999. Warsaw pact was the only alliance to invade its own members when they tries to leave that "soviet paradise". We knew Russia would never change. We we right. We know Russia better than most people ever will. It is called own experience. Putin blames Russia's victims for their will to be safe and secured.
As colorful as that story is, "Lajoy", it's apparently not real. I've looked all over the Web and cannot find a single source for the claim. What I do find is a circular loop of people repeating the story from each other without anyone providing a credible original source from anybody. All the people in the loop heard it from someone else, then they repeated it in turn. If you have a good source that's not simply hearsay, I'd love to see it!
How do you ensure quality control so that no misinformation gets passed out? Must have an amazingly hardworking team doing all that research with such heavy topics and the consistent uploads.

I like how the Soviets claimed all of east Germany as their war spoils, the occupation engulfing the German capital Berlin. But despite the hard border, the guards and barbed wire, they allowed the US access to half of Berlin. Civil victors indeed.
It’s funny because the soviets knew of the a-bomb and in hindsight depending on the cadence he totally could have been tongue and cheek but that’s a clever way to word it. Stalin is happy he was told and already knew but played koi about it. He gained the info that it was complete which he might not have had and thanked him for giving it up so easily

That, when a Politician misspoke, and a loyal border guard of over 25 years basically just gave up.
Specifically he was told anyone who crossed the border was to have their visa voided so they could never return….but when a returning couple asked to go back home to their sleeping baby back home (they just wanted to cross a bridge over to the West and then go home) he relented and that basically gave up. He just worked at keeping the crowds organized and safe.
He had been watching that very broadcast and saw the politician say what he did….was upset, trued calling his superiors, but most were 1/2 asleep and did not have a clue what was going on till it was to late.

That point about stopping communism in Greece partly motivated by fears that Turkey would follow suit seems odd to me - I feel like the best way to keep Turkey from becoming Communist would be to make Greece become Communist, and vice versa. Their rivalry goes back ages, and it's utterly astonishing that they're both members of NATO....and joining NATO was the option that didn't require a major restructuring of their societies.

Its a bit dis genuine of you not to mention that Russia (Putin) wanted the join NATO but got laughed at from the west.
Article 5 also mentions what is “deems necessary to assist the Ally” reflecting the fact that you haven’t actually read it. That can be seen as what the west is doing now with Ukraine by sending ammo and weapons. It doesn’t mean boots on the ground or actual military attacks.

I honestly think that a full history of the Warsaw Pact is necessary. People really need to understand what a sham that "alliance" really was, since, in reality, it was just a cluster of satellite states installed by the Soviet Union that couldn't do anything to assert their sovereignty without the approval of Moscow, like how Russia treats Belarus today. Russia looks at NATO as being the same as the Warsaw Pact, but for the United States, which is why they whine about its expansion as being "Western Imperialism" even though the new states are asking to join of their own free will as a result of Russian aggression, which, ironically, is Russia trying to assert its "sphere of influence" the same way the Soviet Union did with the Warsaw pact.

Why was the USA so successful during the Cold War?
It implemented the Marshall Plan to economically strengthen its partners in Europe.
The USA was the largest economy and opened its market to the products of its allies.
The USA offered its allies a security umbrella with nuclear deterrence through NATO.
As a result, America managed to push back the influence of the Soviet Union on Europe and ultimately win the Cold War.
The alliance between Western Europe and the USA is proving difficult these days.
For example, Germany follows a mercantilist economic model and is therefore dependent on cheap energy and large export markets.
Russia and China can provide both of these for Western Europe like no other country.
The USA, on the other hand, is becoming increasingly less important as an economic partner.
And since the collapse of the Soviet Union, there is no serious military threat from Russia to Western Europe.
Nevertheless, tens of thousands of American soldiers are still stationed on German soil in hundreds of US military bases and US nuclear weapons.
If you look at the situation objectively from the US perspective, America is protecting Europe from the countries with which it has close trade relations.
Europe's core interest, however, is to further expand its economic relations with the USA's biggest competitors.
Don't be blinded by the politicians' rhetoric.
Feelings, shared history, values, culture and traditions play no role at all in whether alliances really work.
What matters is whether the interests coincide.
And it turns out that the interests of Europe and the USA can no longer be reconciled today and this partnership will soon end.

Not really a conflict of interest, since you left out that the "US Committee on NATO" was a non-profit corporation promoting the expansion of NATO membership and not actually part of the government.

Slight correction - they were considering surrender prior to the dropping of the nukes. They didn't refuse to surrender after the first bomb
Eh more like a minority of the Japanese cabinet was looking for surrender, the war hawks were wanting to keep fighting even after Nagasaki and the soviet invasion of Manchuria, it was only with the final decision being made by Hirohito that the war hawks finally conceded and even then only after a failed attempt to stop the surrender broadcast from being played on air.
To insinuate that Japan was “on the verge of surrender” before august 9th (Nagasaki and soviet invasion) is misleading at best. Before the bombs dropped, they were teaching school kids to carry backpacks full of explosives and dive under American tanks. Hardly the type of people you can negotiate with.
@@majestichotwings6974 Nope, the Japanese Imperial Council presented their terms of surrender, which involved exemption from any war crime trials, retaining the emperor and avoiding postwar occupation etc. They tried to find intermediaries in neutral countries to help negotiate a potential armistice. Unfortunately anything short of unconditional surrender was deemed unacceptable to the allies, and likewise unconditional surrender was unacceptable to the Japanese. Having failed to secure surrender on their terms, they then planned to continue on in the hopes they could inflict such massive casualties that the allies would come back to the bargaining table. This is when the US decided to drop the bombs.
And Ironically, after two nukes had been dropped, the Americans actually gave them all but one of their conditions for surrender regardless. Despite saying they were unacceptable. Japan retained its emperor (it always would have ie Marshall plan), and the US (Not the Allies) largely swept their war crimes under the rug (unit 731)and hid it from the other allied nations, as did the Soviets to a lesser degree.
