You're right, you were as lucky as one of them Irish fellas when you found those switches, and you haggled the lad down on the price too, it's great when things like that happen. Glad to see / hear that everything's more or less back to normal with you too (apart from the rogue branch hanging over the roof). Thank you Peter! In the 80s my friend's mom was Irish and kept repeating that to me so it always stuck with me. I didn't even have to haggle he just offered. I still thought what are the odds this specific model switches and nearly fifty years old and close by. I think my uncle was looking over from somewhere beyond and was cheering for me to get this done. That tree is still there... waiting.
Last week a Hitachi SR-503L ( 20W per channel/8 ohm/RMS) arrived at my door, courtesy of a successful online bid through a local site (winning bid: ~US$120 + $20 delivery). The pictures proved accurate, as the receiver came in near perfect condition...hardly a mark on it. Inside it proved really clean, probably because the prior owner had this unit fully revised (Nichicon FG for signal paths + low impedance PW's for the power caps, problem transistors replaced, new filter caps, lights, etc.). He had purchased it as a planned stop-gap while his other higher end amp was under revision. Clearly, he had spared no expense to revise this one before shipping out his primary gear for refurb.
This is my third Hitachi...two years ago I landed an SR-903 (Class G amp: 75W into 8ohm RMS + 160W peak) for $138 in minty mint condition from the same site. As I like that receiver so much, a second SR-903 was purchased last year for $115. One sits in the family room. The second was a bit large for my office, hence its replacement with the smaller SR-503L.
Given the quality of the sound and physical build of these receivers, I have to pinch myself at their prices. Clearly, no Marantz, Pioneer, Sansui tax with these babies. I am OK now to let the secret out...I have my share of these vintage beauties and they are keepers. Now selling off some other equipment (Yamaha CR420, Pioneer LX626, Pioneer VSX-LX60) that I have no need for...and preparing the revise the one SR-903 for future bullet-proofing. Bought all the caps and transistors for this leisure project (and spares for the other). One thing about all of these vintage Hitachi's...the documentation is superlative and the PCB's are all clearly marked. Attention to detail in design and manufacture shows these pieces were made to be easily serviced.
The sound from this little 503L is wonderful: full, good base, low distortion. I also wrapped the black wooden factory case with a dark gray wood-textured vinyl and replaced the rubber feet with machined ALU feet (w/rubber isolation rings at the base of each). Looks fantastic when paired with my Marantz EQ20.

Hi! Thank you! As for these Hitachi components, while I used them with my uncle as a kid, I really only discovered them a couple years ago when I got them in my posession. After I restored the amp and replaced all the caps, I was blown away by the sound and quality of these units. I would love to do more to them like add bluetooth, change the feet, etc. but part of me likes to keep everything original and part of me likes to improve. Not to mention if I modified them I probably would get comments that would never end.

As for modernizing with BT, etc. I was lazy and opted for the FiiO BTA30 Pro ($125). This little unit packs a ton of features. BT5.2; with TX, RX and DAC modes. Supports LDAC, AptX, AptX HD, Aptx LL, AAC, SBC. Has RCA outs too.
In the family room I use it in RX mode with my Hitachi SR-903, paired to Dali Spektors. Note: Android supports LDAC (in dev mode).
Another BTA30Pro is in my office, in DAC mode with PC as source, with the SR-503L paired to bookshelf speakers (Mordaunt Short 20i's/Sony SS-CSD1's). USB-A 3.0 from PC to USB-C into the FiiO for both signal and power.
Comes with an app for remote control, to include volume and a 10-band equalizer.

I believe the MPX filter is a 19 kHz notch filter when recording to tape, as that frequency can interfere with noise reduction systems and the bias oscillator.
That makes a lot of sense. I couldn't find much on it and while I found the service manual, that information would have been more in the user manual which I might have somewhere but did not see online.

Hi Plex! Man I looked for those everywhere and if I had space for a workshop I would build one but I need a bigger house. So, I got a glass one for now, it's clean and the modern look of it mixed with the old components is not bad.

Hmmmmmmmmm, why do you waste your time and money on a bottom end 3 gang FM Tuner.
Perhaps watching the video and the history you would understand why. I've said it often that this was a system that was sentimental to me for many reasons as it belonged to my uncle who past away. Not to mention the fact that on this channel I "waste my time and money" restoring old electronic equipment of every kind because I love the retro and vintage equipment.
