I think how the plots gonna go for this movie is that where as last time Joy tried to only make Riley happy by not letting emotions use the console as much therefore it caused Riley to nearly shut down emotionally, in this one Riley will let the new emotions have too much freedom and it'll cause Riley to act out a lot and cause chaos and at the end of the movie they end up getting more organized just like how the emotions are in her parents minds

Anxiety, like Fear, is all about keeping you safe. The issue is when that anxiety doesn't stop. It's supposed to let you know when something feels off, or when you're nervous, which gives you an idea of something new to learn.

I'm getting the feeling that if the core 5 are 4 seemingly negative but actually self-preserving emotions led by Joy - ie they ensure Riley's survival when interacting with the physical world - these next 4 are characterized by emotions needed to find purpose and self-actualize (something that tends to happen to most adolescents during puberty), and might be led by an emotion that would do just that. What that emotion is supposed to be, I have no idea. I imagine this next five might be needed to help Riley properly scale Maslow's hierarchy. Or give her neurodivergence.

I'm betting it's Love. But I'm hoping that it won't only apply for romance, it could also mean passion, compassion, appreciation, and self-love. The dark side of Love could be explored too, like idolatry and narcissism.

  • @scaper8

I think a possible out-of-left-field pick for a tenth emotion would be "contentment." The feeling of just being good where you are and with what you have. In life in general, just at a particular moment, or whatever.
To me "contentment" comes off almost as a subdued version of joy, which would fit well with the idea of new emotions merging with the older ones and allowing for more nuance in emotional degrees or intensities.

I do think there will be a 10th emotion. I like the ideas put forth for Pride and Hope, but I feel like the 10th emotion will probably be Love. However I don't think it'll go by the name Love, rather I think it would be called something like Attraction or Desire to make it less about just liking things and familial love and such and more about the aspect of love of wanting something or someone and doing anything you can to get it even to an obsessive or unhealthy degree.

In defense of anxiety - I have been told consistently throughout my life I was a thoughtful, considerate person. I partially blame my anxiety disorder. Anxiety is an emotion that makes you review what the future might bring, and it it through reflection that we can best anticipate what needs to be done. Anxiety (ironically) helps me be calm and prepared in an emergency, because I've already made a plan. Anxiety helps me be conscientious about other people's needs and anticipate other people's boundaries. Anxiety helps me create a safer environment for myself and others. There's also a whole heck of a lot that anxiety doesn't help me with, but the above reasons are why I wouldn't want to get rid of anxiety all together.

Envy is when you want what someone else has. For example, your neighbour just bought a new convertible, and you want one for yourself.
Jealousy is when you already have something and you're worried that someone will take it from you. For example, your neighbour just bought a new convertible and offered your wife a ride, and you're concerned that he might try to steal her from you.

Okay, if Inside Out 2 actually ends up turning out to be a genuine coming-out-the-closet self-discovery story by the end, I will cry! That actually feels like it could work and be completely organic, rather than feeling like forced inclusion, which honestly the Lightyear and Onward examples felt like. The Turning Red one was nice, subtle. But a story explicitly about discovering that in a way that's also universal to coming-of-age experiences in way EVERYONE can relate to, it just so happens this character goes through this specific arc, would be amazing! It doesn't make anyone feel excluded if they're not LGBT, and instead motivates EMPATHY; how perfect for a movie about EMOTIONS!

but with Riley, joy, sadness, disgust and anxiety are female while fear and anger are male. from the poster I think ennui might be male as well and we don't see embarrassment and envy enough to notice their gender.
      anyway.
There have been theories on this for ages. But Riley could be figuring out during Inside Out 2 that they're actually somewhere under the non-binary umbrella.

Emotions are never good or bad by themselves, is the reaction to them that counts. Ghandi first reacted to anger in a destructive way creating an armed revolution that just finished by changing his people from oppresed to oppressors. Then the original opressors took back power and he was thrown in jail. In his time in jail he meditated a lot, he felt so much new anger but he understood his past error. So the new response to his anger, when he got out, was a peaceful revolution, the salt one, a creative solution to their problem. Wether you choose to destroy or to create is what matters with your emotions.
If i envy you and in response I come to you and ask you to teach me that's a constructive way to use envy.

This is an emotion teenagers are very familiar with or at least I was, you are commonly infatuated (have crushes) with other people, and you have a sort of infatuation with different hobbies, books, styles, etc. It comes to mind more than love since love feels like something you wouldn't need an exact pilot for. • @clarapowerszwerg9698

One of the things you said is that that 10th emotion could be the counter part to Joy and if that really is the case, then Schadenfreude (btw you pronounce the e in the end in a similar way you say the 'e' in the beginning of embarrassment) could be a good option for this. Schaden means damage and Freude means Joy, so Schadenfreude literally means damage-joy. It's not only (what you explained) the joy when someone falls e.g. but in general the joy of someone else's misfortune and damage (doesn't have to be physical pain; could also e.g. be a bad grade in school). I feel like this could be a good counter part to joy....

(Not just romantic, also familiar and plantonic love or love for hobbies and such. It would make sense with Riley hitting puberty too.

    Possibility suggestion:
The story isn't about necessarily bonding with the new emotions (that instead being a misdirect about the plot initially) but rather each of the new emotions becoming buddies with and starting to connect to the new emotions - and leaving Joy with no new friend to bond with and eventually grow alongside. The story becomes about the emotions putting a hold on their merging/bonding and trying to find a new partner for Joy, eventually finding one that fits after encountering several much, much, much lesser and barely-experienced emotions.
Maybe something like Yearning being a good emotional pair up for Joy, as Yearning is a desire for something not yet experienced (or not experienced enough) and could be seen as a counterpart to Joy.

THEORY: The new emotions aren't counterparts to just one of the core emotions, they are counterparts to two of the core emotions. If you line the new and old characters up like the colour wheel circle (to form a cycle) they go Sadness, Envy, Disgust, Joy, Anxiety, Anger, Embarrassment (is Bingbong back?), Fear, Ennui ---> and back to Sadness. The characters original are going to get more range, but these new emotions are there to facilitate "mood swings" because Riley is going to start feeling things more intensely more instantaneously. Also the new characters will be sort of triggers for the original emotions to take more complete control; Envy will trigger Disgust and Sadness, Anxiousness will be a precursor to intense episodes of Joy or Anger, Embarrassment will trigger Anger or Fear, Ennui will trigger Fear or Sadness. The colour choices in these movies are too intentional for them not to have significance, the easiest answer was make a rainbow out of the characters to see who they will be closest to.

It just dawned on me as we went through the list, at first i thought its gotta be either love or trust because what the first movie did was make a very impactful statement about the nature of joy and sadness. And then of course that made me wonder what could the writer be possibly wanting to say with this next film and my answer came when i thought about probably the most important emotion they thought to include: anxiety.
It comes as no surprise to me that they want to tackle this issue. Anxiety in children feels like an issue more relavent than ever, especially here in the US where Pixar resides. I couldn't imagine a better movie to use to say and even educate young people about anxiety than this. I remember how when the first film came i i heard people talking how its helped children talk about their emotions in therapy and that to me is very big. So i think Pixar wants to do the same for anxiety.
And i think this film will be about how to manage all those new turbulant emotions, especially anxiety. So that makes me think the tenth emotion will be "Zen" and Riley discovering how to achieve the a new thinking pattern to regulate her anxieties. Its not going to magic and a cure all but i think it will show a form of acceptance in allowing the messiness of those other emotions reside in her.
Well that's assuming im riggt in the direction of the story, could be totally different if they want to focus the other aspects of puberty.
But I think "Zen" also fits as a counterpoint to Joy. It's not the opposite of joy the way sadness is but it does feel like in many ways as we grow into adulthood the need for calm and inner peace is something that becomes a greater need to feel and to act on as we mature rather than joy. Personally one of the things I learned in adolescence was reining in my need for self gratification (joy) in favor of acting with a lack of emotion but with more of a sense of responsibility, determination, and logic. Doing more without getting so emotionally involved. And having that strong grasp on your emotions comes well after adolescence but becoming and attempting to rein those emotions began in adolescence. Trying and failing many many times. And I think it would be really cool to see Riley go through some of those trail and errors.

I also feel like I need to point out again (I did on the last video) that Envy and Jealousy are two different emotions, not the same emotion. To quote Homer from The Simpsons "I'm not jealous, I'm envious. Jealousy is when you worry someone will take what you have. Envy is wanting what someone else has. What I feel is envy."

More of a listless dissatisfaction and feeling that everything has been done before and there is nothing _to_ look forward to or get excited over. Less sitting in the waiting room too long and more mild depression.

  • @alixfirth5278
    @alixfirth5278 Před 7 měsíci +11

My first thought was pride too for the exact same reasons but also because after the first film I feel like Riley's parents would be much more attentive towards her. She will be their 'PRIDE & JOY' and I feel like that attention will become overwhelming for Riley at some point which will cause her anxiety to rise. After all, she knows she can't run away again, her parents would be heartbroken and disappointed which would lead to a lack of trust (which in all honestly might be a problem at this point because of the previous run away attempt). Being proud is something I can see Riley struggling with because of everything that happened in the first film and because of the onslaught of puberty, I think Joy and the others will have to find Pride to help Riley because they just won't be able to help her confidence/mental health otherwise. She's definitely felt pride before like with the other emotions, she was proud of her hockey team. I'm curious as to what colour Pride would be though, red is most symbolic but that's obviously already taken, I would suggest orange (similar warm tone to red) or purple (symbolises nobility) but they're both taken too.

Personally I do think there's one more hiding and Hope and Love seem very feasible. Also I don't necessarily think Pride would be about LGBTQ because, as someone who has a lot of friends in the community and is skirting some of the letters myself, I can tell you that there are signs in your head way before you realise and way before puberty. Like if Riley has had imaginary boyfriends in her head, there would have been girls in her head as well in similar roles to signify that there's any form of attraction. Or if she herself turns out to be a boy, there would be signs for that as well.. or aren't there?

Frankly, I'm a trans guy and I didn't start asking myself questions about gender until middle school. I was pretty apathetic towards it. until puberty hit and I was like "wait why is this happening? this isn't the one I wanted".
And looking at Riley's mind compared to peers or the parents, it seems like Riley could easily be non-binary or under that umbrella(even the guy they talk to at the game had all male emotions, like the father, Riley's emotions' genders are mixed)
