How to make ambient & drone music with a small setup (using my 4 steps)

- Last month I made a video explaining 4 steps that can give structure when making an ambient or drone track. In this video I dive a bit deeper in those steps by adding more hands-on examples, thoughts, and exercises on my small eurorack setup. Make sure to watch the other video first:

Thanks for all the patching ideas. I love these kinds of vids from you! As a suggested alternative, not a criticism of your setup, I might swap out bloom for a 2hp TM, a compact quantizer (maybe disting?), and for spice I'd enjoy a happy merding FM aid. I recently acquired an fm aid, and it is like an exponent on your timbral possibilities.
Hmmm, thinking more, I might need a clock source in there too. What do we have for lfos in there? Can that work? Should I shut up and watch and learn? Let's find out together.
My biggest struggle is making a drone evolve organically. Either by timbre or pitch, I always get stuck with the same cadence. This was helpful to revisit my process, thank you. Great work as always!
Nice, glad to hear it added something. Enjoy your explorations :)
Been following you since forever, I think. Certainly since that jam in the evening sunlight. Love your sound, and your explanations are very clear and helpful. I’m really happy there are people like you out there in Internet land.
Same! 🙏🏻✌🏻
Another great video on how to actually, actually use the gear. I love it!
Glad you liked it! That's what I'm aiming for more this year :) Cheers!
Another fantastic video 👏 Best instructive videos on modular out there. Keep up the good work ❤
Much appreciated! Glad you like it, and will keep up for sure! Lot's of plans to come :) Cheers!
You always give so much to work on in a video, thank you for keeping us off the streets at night ;-)
Haha, glad to hear you get some things to do :) But no need to try out everything!
@@MonotrailTechTalk No that would take me way more time than you already put into these videos, for which I thank you a lot by the way.
I love these kind of videos. They inspire me to dive into the modules I already have, instead of pining for more, more, more... Thanks very much for that much needed reminder.
Hey, glad to hear it! Finally made the move to non-sponsored content this year, and happy to see people appreciate that! All the best :)
I think this is one of your best videos.
Usually when speaking about ambient or drones in modular it's really easy for me to get bored but here I feel like this was really inspired and true.
I recommend listening to the lovely ex machina soundtrack to compliment this video
Hey, thanks! That's nice to hear. And great movie and soundtrack for sure, might do that again later :) Cheers!
I've watched a bunch of your videos and this is one of my favorites. It's so great to see the theory linked to practice and also watch how you actually *play* your instrument over some minutes.
Hey, thanks for letting me know! That's exactly what I hoped. CZcams stats tell me longer audio demos aren't always great for keeping people watching the video. But I think the 'playing' a modular part isn't covered so much, and interesting to share. So much fun and skills are in practicing the instrument, instead of just patching and buying more. Cheers!
Your work is unbelievable talented! Really good work.
Wow, thanks! Glad to hear you like my output :) Cheers!
@@MonotrailTechTalk those sounds are something i vould listen for hours ♥️
great 👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Your videos are always so engaging (easy to listen to) and keep my attention (not too long and not too short)…not many channels out there are as educational and inspirational as yours….TY!
Wow, thank you! That's very nice to hear. Thanks for watching, and all the best!
Love your videos man. They’ve helped me a ton when I got into modular.
Hey, that's nice to hear! Exactly what I am hoping for, and hearing it works for people is a great motivation! Cheers :)
Another awesome tutorial, with some truly inspirational sounds around 14:00. I'm going to give some of these techniques a shot later today!
Glad you like it! And happy to hear the tunes are appreciated :) Cheers, and enjoy!
thanks- very nice -))
Thank you! Cheers!
Very deep sounds
Thanks! :)
My friend sent me a link to an older video where you explained how to make complex oscillators. Since then I've been watching you videos and picking up all kinds of useful hints.
Your small case video made me realize my single Att/Verter was not enough and now I am on the hunt for my ideal unit. I think the DPW Av1 or 2 will win out because it has a sum and a A>B comparator logic in it.
Do you discuss comparators in any of your videos?
Like all your videos, I watched and made mental notes, but I will be back to review again later.
Thanks, Griff
Awesome! Glad you like it :) I haven't covered comparators yet! I did cover the 3xMIA and basic utility, and it's still my most recommended module by far! All the best :)
Top, Danke!
Gerne!
I love your Videos ❤
Glad to hear it! And thanks for watching :)
Amazing content. Huge sound from small but very cleverly put together system. I have a similar system actually and this has given me tons of inspiration. Quick question - what fx algorithms are you generally using on the FX aid? Are all of voices summed and then run into it or do you have some bypassing the FX?
Glad it was helpful! The two voices are summed with the Nano Alt VCA, and then run through the FX. Have to admit I don't even know how the fx are called, just flipping through different ones until I stick to one :) Cheers!

Thanks! :)
I really like the steps you suggest. I think bearing in mind the frequencies of the separate sounds is a top tip. I know you’ve said before elsewhere but, what is the outboard mixer you use? And how many outs from this set up go to the mixer? Im enjoying these most recent series of vids.
Hi there! Glad you like the vid. I'm using a Mackie 1202 VLZ4. In this video I am not actually using it though. There's just a stereo signal going from the FX aid to the mixer, and then my interface. There's no EQ or FX beside the modular.
@@MonotrailTechTalk thanks for replying.
I felt like I had enough of the Bloom but then started messing with the CV inputs, it stayed in my rack.
i am still struggling to set up a real small rack, like 3u rackbrute, which still gives as many options as possible. just too many larger modules that i use most time
No need to force yourself to get smaller maybe? It's always tempting to keep all the stuff around for sure :)
@@MonotrailTechTalk still it would be nice to have a small portable rack aside the big one. To jam in the garden or elsewhere
