I got a Sega Genesis for Christmas, at a point I had zero interest in video games and knew nothing about them. I was more into Leggo and GI Joe at that point. Then I walked into the kitchen the day after Christmas, and my dad had the Sega connected to the TV, the only one in the house with RCA inputs, playing Sonic 1. I was completely stunned, immediately became addicted to video games, and still have that Genesis and that copy of Sonic to this day... and still play it.

You were kind of a spoiled kid, bro. Your friends, too. I wish my parents were so gracious as to drop hundreds of dollars on multiple consoles and tons of games almost as soon as they were released. We weren't hard up for money or anything, but they just didn't believe in throwing that kind of money for some merchandise that they didn't particularly deem to be a positive pastime for a 10-year old. I was thrilled when I finally got my NES in late 1989, and I had to sell it to afford to buy my own Genesis in '92. Which I promptly sold to get a SNES in '93 because of my hard-on for Zelda and Squaresoft. There's my story. Must have been really frustrating for you to have to wait an extra month to get your Game Boy and SNES while you were getting every piece of technology under the sun handed to you. Okay, I'm done being bitter. My parents did get me a nice car when I was 16, so there's that. They really just hated video games (brain rot, my dad called them).

Mike Bryant Isn't it funny how much the culture of video games has changed over the years? During the boom in the late 70's and early 80's, it was sort of an across the board thing--more of a fad than anything else. People went to arcades and were amazed by the technology. But after the crash and the advent of the personal computer, people sort of migrated away from them until Nintendo brought the console market back to prominence. Except now suddenly, it was viewed as more of a "toy." So video games were for kids. Not only that, they were "mindless" and highly stigmatized by adults. My parents derided video games heavily, and I was only allowed so much time to play per day (even though television itself received no such restrictions--as if one "rots your brain" but not the other). These days--and you can partially attribute this to my generation now being adults--video games are for everyone, and they are not necessarily viewed as a mindless waste of time. You could argue that contribute to an idle lifestyle and obesity if you want to compartmentalize things, but that applies to all aspects of our plugged in lifestyle today. The bottom line is that we've come a long way with the perception of gaming in society.

Thanks for sharing your good memories on console. I had similar experiences as well but I grew up in Japan so we played different games. I had a Famicon and Dragon Quest was the biggest games then. I didn't get Super Famicon but instead I inherited Sega Genesis from my cousin because he was going off to college and gaming was taking away his school time. I think it worked out well, I enjoyed Sega and Shinning Force and Phantasy Star was enough to satisfy my RPG lust lol

Super Castlevania IV was the first game I played on the SNES, and I loved it; it is still one of my favorite games. My neighbor got an SNES in '92, so I went to the store to rent a game for it. Since it was still a fairly new system at the time, there weren't many games to rent, and Super Castlevania IV was the only one that looked interesting. That was at around 4 in the afternoon, and we stayed up playing it until past midnight. I crashed on his couch, and we continued the next morning where we'd left off. The rental had to be back to the store by 6 PM, and by around 5:30 we both kept getting beaten by Dracula. My neighbor thought it was time to give up and take the game back, but I said, "One more try", and that try was successful; beat the game and got it back to the store just in time to avoid a late fee.
