- After discontinuing the American Original line recently, the classic reissue segment of Fender's American catalogue was left empty, leaving many wondering what's next? (if anything?). Introducing the return of the American Vintage series, featuring year-specific spec guitars from Fender's classic back-catalogue.
In this video, Tom explores the 1957 Stratocaster in two tone burst finish, featuring new Pure Vintage 57 Strat pickups, chunky V shape neck, 7.25" board radius, vintage-accurate nitro finish and plenty of that 50s Strat mid-range grunt.
Our Amp for this video was a Strymon Iridium Amp and Cab sim, with Tom using a few pedals at the end: Fuzz Face, EQD Special Cranker, Boss Space Echo, Ditto looper and a Fender Tre-Verb.

Nice review and playing thank you
I have a 30 year old 57' reissue 2 tone suburst strat that just got a fret job and I went with 6105 fret wire instead of the classic small frets that came on this guitar. The luthier highly recommended these frets for improved bending and playability. In looking at the specs of these new resissue 57 strats Fender switched to these too.. calling them "Vintage Tall". Good move!
Just as your review and demo of the AV II 61', you killed it. Thanks again for not playing endless Hendrix noodling. And thanks for playing Floyd and the Dead.
Best demo of the new series on the tube - very well done!
Best demo of this guitar, period. Thank you.
Really good demo! Thanks for a wide range of tones and explanations!
Cheers Michael!
Great demo! Thanks for all the clean tones. :)
our pleasure!
Crazy good playing!🔥
Excellent Casey Jones, my dude!
Hell yeah.
Great song choices!
Very good review, this guitar is amazing it could easily be my dream guitar
Great demo of a beautiful strat.
Cheers!
I really love your style man.
Great demo! I love your Casey Jones cover at the end!
cheers! And good pick up, great tune!
Thats a sweet guitar!
Nice sales pitch for the middle pickup 🤠
Came for more about AVII.
Will come back to work on my Casey Jones! Nice…
Excellent review. I am a big Buddy Holly fan, and this Vintage II 57 looks like the last Strat that Holly had after changing from his 54 model. They are pretty expansive at over $2,000, 00.USD but I am going to order one. You also get a correct period tweed hard case with it. It will be worth it to me. Btw, nice intro with Link Wrays Rumble, also like Baby Please Dont Go version by V. Morrison and Them.
Actually the last one that Holly had was a '58 strat. He lived to see and own a 3-tone sunburst strat.
whats with these homies dis...........
I think the stand out for this range are the new pickups. Guitars seem relatively the same as previous AVRI releases but these new pickups sound amazing. Hopefully they releases them for sale as parts. Or I need to justify another guitar.
yeah they've absolutely nailed the pickups, no word on whether they'll be sold separately just yet 🤞
Anderton’s video said they will sell these aftermarket at a later date
Nobody ever focuses on reviewing the tremolo block and the saddles, the nut and the tuners and how much gloss or not is on the fretboard and the details on the finish (what primer, how many layers etc) 🤷🏻♂️
I absolutely love your playing. Great demo, very easy and natural. It’s a toss up between the pros of the ‘57 and the ‘61. I think I like a soft V neck , but prefer a rosewood slab with clay dots. I might also like the ‘57 pickups in the bridge and the ‘61 in the neck. I’m open to be influenced by more experienced here on what would be preferential in the middle.
Looks.. probably a Fiesta Red ‘61. Tone and feel,, probably a seafoam green ‘57. :-)
Appreciate the positive feedback, you'll just have to go try them side by side and see which one sings for you, there's no bad choices here 😍
Go for the 57 Sunburst & 61 Olympic 😊
@@voltagevillain7342 I have a sunburst Tele already and the Olympic is so classic that I’m surprising myself trying to breakout of that archetype. So either year, it would be a real change up aesthetically for me. Curiously unexpected. I could totally relate to the sunburst and Olympic though!!! I can find no fault in your preferences!
Gloss neck is always a bummer, but the nitro will wear away to a much better finish. Not a deal breaker tho
I really don’t think the pick-up selector and tone controls need to be explained on what is universally the most well known electric guitar configuration ever, otherwise great demo. On the guitar itself what’s annoying me is the sunburst is uneven, that thickness of the line is not consistent across the body, could be they made a mistake and had to spray a wider black band around the horn. Would I expect fender to do this? Sadly yes.
'57 vs '61:
Which do you prefer the sound of?
How many pieces of wood are the 57 strats made of? From the pictures doesn’t look like it’s a two pieces bookmatched, looks more like 3 or two but the cut is on the first third of the guitar body and not the center. Is this a period correct assembly?
I hear a bit of China Cat Sunflower in there 👀
One of Tom's fav Strat licks ever!
It would be interesting if you tried a Fender American Vintage II ‘57 Strat in Vintage Blonde, as that has an Ash body. The Sunburst and Green colours have an Alder body. Wonder if there are any noticeable differences in feel and tone.
good to know that only that color has that characteristic
Think these would age and wear down / check like actual vintage strats?
About a year ago I bought 57'/ 62' reissue single-coils because I'm not rich and can't afford an actual vintage. But golly are they the best
I'm a southpaw and very grateful they come lefty.
@@drivenmad7676 me too!
@@bobramalhorealtor6523 I haven't had the chance to try one yet but looking forward to the Strats. How about you, have you tried any of them yet?
@@drivenmad7676 I have not , but I kept looking at these online and finally ordered a Lefty 57 sea foam green from Sweetwater.
@@bobramalhorealtor6523 Haha!!! Yeah buddy, today's a good day my friend. Enjoy!!!
What is that song from 5:03? I can't remember the name :)
Sounds like the pedal steel bit at the beginning of Breathe.
Thicker neck than a professional ii?
Deep Purple and Grateful Dead at the end?
I think I like the sound of the 61 replica better
Casey Jones!
"Baby please don't go" ... at least don't take my Stratocaster ...
Haha fender keeps making the same guitars and marketing them differently
Do you want them to stop making guitars? Because why would you change them. We want vintage w/o paying 20k.
It wont age beautifully, because it has a poly base coat.
same as every Fender for the last 60+ years, but i guess we'll have to circle back in a couple of decades to find out for sure!
@@MannysMusic_Online As a fender dealer you are saying that poly has been used for 60+ years. Wow.
@@Mikelennon78 yeah so what??
u want rhe real deal?? this is why I only buy custom shops and dano casters
@@Mikelennon78 No need for attitude. As far as we're aware, Fullerplast was used originally, a type of plastic coating. If you've got some info that says otherwise than by all means fill us in!
Upsetting. The American original looked and sounded better. SMH.
