  • Hello and welcome! In this video I will be reviewing the Royal Talens Art Creation sketchbooks. I will cover the basics of the sketchbook, and a few positives and negatives of cream colour paper. Then I will tell you about my experiences with different traditional mediums in the art creation sketchbooks, showing you examples of sketches in those mediums. I also recommend some artists you can check out who use particular mediums in art creation sketchbooks either for just sketching or for making finished products, in order for you to gain a better understanding of some mediums on this paper. I will cover graphite pencil, colour pencil, ink pens (fineliners), brush pens, ballpoint pens, acrylic markers, alcohol based markers, water based markers, watercolour, gouache, and touch on some artists you can check out for acrylic paint and oil paint. Finally I will tell you my overall opinions of this sketchbook, what I love it for and what I don't.
*DISCLAIMER* This is NOT sponsored. I bought all of the sketchbooks shown in the video with my own money, and base my opinions on my own experiences using and filling multiple of these sketchbooks. Every artist has different preferences for their art supplies, and your preferences may be different to mine. I hope that by showing you examples of different mediums you can gauge if this is a sketchbook that you may love, like, or hate before picking one up.

I have a like hate relationship with this sketchbook. I like it because it's cheap and it has a lot of pages and a decent thickness to the paper. It can handle acrylics and gouache if it's not too wet. Even oils if you prime the paper. But the composition of the paper makes it so paint looks dull in my opinion. And when it comes to drawing, sketching works but anything that requires several layers doesn't and, the values never reach enough darkness for me.

Thank you for sharing your perspective! So often a type of sketchbook can be amazing for some things, okay for other mediums, and then awful for some techniques and all sorts of variance within that based on preferences. It's great to hear different artists' experiences to gain a wider view of an art material :)

Really helpful examples. I’ve never used a paper as good as this with paper stump tortilions. It smudges so smoothly and evenly and finely it’s like heaven. I only just started smudging lately with some pencil work for effect or speed and this paper is a joy with it.

I absolutely love these sketchbooks, I've finished 3 of them, I like the cream paper color it's not as intimidating as a white paper. I use watercolors in them a lot and it has never bleed through. And there's a lot of colors to choose from.

I admire these sketchbooks. Where I live they are a go-to choice for many-many artists and hobbyists , cause the quality is excellent and the price is great in comparison to another quality brands. Btw, just my five cents, they now have sketchbooks with white paper in this range (look for pretty covers with prints, I think the names of cover designs are Art Deco, Still Life and Milkmaid. I believe the Cork one also has white paper, though I am not sure, since I don't have it.)

Quick tip when using alcohol markers in the sketchbook! There’s almost ABSOLUTELY NO bleedthru if you glue the pages together, like two and two. There is however some bleeding if you layer the markers alot, like around 15-20 layers. Hope this helped! :D
Edit 1: Forgot to say that I use ohuhu and have tried copics on it too. Copic bleeds thru almost immediately while ohuhu takes 20+ layers^^ I also tested how many layers it could take, and I underestimated it 😭. I could go 20 layers without any problems, just give it time to dry and you will be good to go!

I love these Royal Talens sketchbooks. I have almost ten empty ones and two filled. I use it both as a scrapbook and for pen and ink doodles over which I watercolor. I also tape watercolor papers into it if i want better paper. I exclusively use the A4 size. They can handle light washes and pen and ink pretty well. I wish the paper was more white, but these are so great for the price. They lay absolutely flat too!!!❤

i've been wanting to pick up one of these sketchbooks for years because there are so many cute cover colors!! my usual favorites are also stillman & birn and the strathmore 500 mixed media. it can take me around a year to fill a sketchbook though, since i'm a rather slow and small painter and i can easily spend days on one page. still have a whole shelf to get through before i can justify buying any new ones QAQ

These are a great value, esp. because they are so versatile and can be used with many media. I often use them for quick watercolor sketches ( but certainly not as a substitute for watercolor paper). I've created background washes and even if the paper buckles a bit, it straightens out once the page dries and the book is closed. It's a mystery to me how it holds up.

I like these! I have two my self. One thing that is really in their favor, is that they are really cheap compared to every other sketchbook with as thick a paper. It makes me more likely to play around and try new things, when I am not thinking about it as expensive.

I hafta say, I watch a lot of sketchbook reviews and yours is what I'd consider perfect and everything I look for in a video. It's well thought out, clear and concise points, and it covers most mediums I'd want to use in a sketchbook. With the added benefit of mentioning other artists you follow who use the book themselves. Also, you've got lots of examples of your own beautiful work to illustrate your points. Before your video I hadn't heard of this sketchbook (though I do know Talens paints), but will add one to my bullpen of books, since I normally use Moleskine, Stillman & Birn, or Cottonwood Arts sketchbooks. Well done and I look forward to watching your channel grow! Cheers!!

Hi. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a New Yorker expat living abroad).
    1. First of all, very nice review of the Talens Sketchbooks.
    2. Their price is excellent for quality (covers, paper thickness and look&feel - similar to a moleskin in L&F in some ways, for example).
    3. The creamy colour of the pages... well, might be a bit intense (if they were a few notches lighter I think it would help, 'cause as you said... blacks come out lighter as well as other colours).
    4. With ink (I use Fountain Pens and brush pens very often for sketching as well as painting with ink using watercolor brushes) ghosting and bleed trough is a big, big, big issue. You need to work very, very lightly (in comparison with other sketchbooks with thicker paper - 200 gsm minimum) and when sketching that's a problem if you want more finished pieces.
    5. Graphite works very good as well as charcoal. I haven't found any issues for Sketching.
    6. With coloured pencils, paper works well but you have a limited amount of layering (I use both Faber Castell Polychromos as well as watercolor pencils.
    7. Watercolor pencils work very very good when applying water to the sketch.
    8. It cannot withstand Watercolor, though. The paper starts peeling off after using small amounts of water (when using watercolor in the normal sense). It can hold light watercolor with a low amount of water and very few layers.
    9. GOUACHE - I haven't tried it yet on these but I've seen other artists using these sketchbooks with GOUACHE, but painting with Gouache more like Oil paint, not as watercolor paint. But I will try it soon and see the results.
    10. They are GREAT for journaling... very good paper for Fountain Pen use in writing at a very affordable price and quality.
I hope my experience with Royal Talens Sketchbooks help. I've been using them for several years, and have tried all the example a I've given. I sketch, draw and paint daily.
    Cheers from Sunny Spain!
    😁👍😎

One more thing I forgot to mention...
I've seen so.e artists (can't remember their channels in CZcams) that have primed with a light Gesso the paper before using Gouache or Acrylic Gouache and Acrylic paint.. I have personally haven't tried it yet but it would also be really cool to know.
Overall, as long as you learn how to use the paper on these sketchbooks and the creamy colour of their pages is ok with you (I would like them a bit lighter on the creamy side) they are a real gem for your buck!
      Cheers!

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experiences with the Talens Sketchbooks and in such detail too. I appreciate hearing other artists opinions on materials. I have used gesso on paper to prime it, and it works well but I recommend holding down the edges of the paper to prevent buckling while you are applying it and letting it dry. I'm a bit nervous to try oils in sketchbooks yet but tempted to give it a go! Thank you again for your detailed response, happy drawing! ☺️

I've been carrying one of these since the start of the year (the 3,5x5,5" one) and haven't had much problem with the paper, I draw on it mainly with ink (Rotring Isographs w/ Rotring Ink + Kuretake No.50 w/ Platinum Carbon ink) and even when I fill areas in black the ink barely bleeds, it handles Copics well enough (it bleeds on the back but rarely bleeds to the next sheet, still recommend having a piece of copy paper or a plastic sheet) and it handles light ink washes pretty well.
I bought 2 of them (I'm currently about halfway on the first) to replace a Sakura Sketchbook of the same size that I filled up, the paper quality is about the same.

For the nibs - the paper is smooth enough to work with the nibs I have. I mainly use a g nib and mapping nib for dip pens. Both have been fine on the paper, but I don't press down too hard with them.
For ink - it depends on the ink you're using. It's the same with any form of ink pens with this paper, some inks work well and others don't at all in my experience. It would require some experimenting depending on your preferences. Thanks for the question!
