  • Today I am harvesting several containers of potatoes here at Grey Ghost Garden. The first container is full of Norland Red. Ok, full disclosure, I forgot about this container…maybe I should forget about ALL of my potato containers! The second container is my first harvest of Viking Purple potatoes! For whatever reason, the foliage in this container started dying off before I thought it should based on my planting calendar and relative to the other containers planted with Viking Purple seed. If anyone has any thoughts on why this may have happened, I’d love to hear them in the comments below. I’d also love to hear how everyone else’s potato harvest has been so far this spring. So far in the Grey Ghost Garden, Norland Red has done very well. Purple Viking is looking very promising. But Kennebec Whites have underwhelmed. Lots of tater reviews still to come.

It would be difficult to know the reason for the plant dying off too quickly without seeing the leaves and symptoms etc,
Potentially it could have been a nutrient deficiency as purple Viking take around 3 months so it could have depleted all of the nutrients out of the soil, or it could have been the general health of the soil, I am glad you managed to get a harvest out of it though!
I highly recommend watching this guy when it comes to growing potatoes he knows his chit haha

I guess part of the reason I was baffled a little is because all the purple Viking were planted at the same time, with the same batch of soil. They were watered the same, fertilized the same, etc. There were some ants, but no signs of disease. Oh well, chalk it up to experience. We ate some of the Vikings the other night and they were fantastic! Never had them before. Wish I could get the seed earlier so I could get them harvested before it really gets hot here in SE Texas.
