  • The Birdman and Jim Tom hang out on Jim Tom's porch. Birdman talks about "the little people", how they can help you and eventually turn on you. Cherokee legends that are rarely recorded, from Still Making Moonshine.

My boys' grandmother who is part Indian has always talked about little people. We just thought she was messing around. whenever something would go missing in her house she would always say she guessed that the little people took it.

I dont even care if he's BSing or not, what he's talking about is 100% the real deal. I used to see these "creatures" when i was very little.
And i suspect my old homestead has one. You don't talk about them, and you damn sure don't blame them for anything or make jokes about them.
You pretend they're not there even if you see them, and they will do the same. It's like a game you play with little kids...... when the kid thinks he's invisible and you go along with it. No one will believe you anyway.
I found that out when I was little. I used to see one in a tall pine tree. He would stand still as a statue, looking off into the horizon over the house.
I tried to tell the adults but they laughed, thought i was making it up.
This creature didn't want anything to do with me and i dang sure didn't want anything tobdo with it!
Though it didn't look at me it did have a sort of malevolent grin. Nut brown skin, clean shaven but wizened face. The clothing looked old and kinda grungy. No hair on top of its head.
Looked about as tall as me but not scrawny or frail or wispy. Imagine Dopey from snow white.... only this was more like Dopey's evil twin.
We lived at that place briefly, staying with another family until my mom found us a place of our own. It was strange and i didn't like being there. I loved being outdoors as a kid, but not there. I wouldn't go any farther than the back doorsteps.... close enough to run inside if i needed to.
I think i was three years old, maybe 4... not in school yet.
The place I'm at now in an ooooold homestead and very likely old Indian hunting grounds. We find arrowheads every now and then. There's an old wagon wheel imbedded in an enormous hickory tree. And there's always been a presence. My husband is impervious to anything supernatural, he even picks at me for believing in this stuff. But I'm not going to pretend i didn't see this stuff anymore than I'd denyb seeing a deer. However he absolutely hates going outside after dark. He says it's because one evening a few years ago he was standing in the driveway by the road and felt an oppressive malevolence around him, like he was about to be someone's dinner.
And our kids have even heard things they couldn't explain. The sounds of tiny feet running across the roof and shouting "weeeeee" as it reached the edge. On one memorable occasion my oldest (9 at the time) said something rude about the "house elf".... the next day the internet cable was in pieces like something had chopped it up with a hoe.
My own experiences involve things disappearing the second i lay it down. Sometimes it shows up again immediately, sometimes never. One particular day I was looking for a lighter that i knew was on the dining table. I'd just seen it that morning. when i needed it it was gone. The table was clear. Natural assumtiplon was someone has grabbed it earlier. But .... I was home alone. I then turned the house upside down trying to find it because now it's a mission. In my household i am the finder. If anything goes missing i can always retrieve it because I'm persistent (and i know how to look for things, unlike my family who will overlook the object when it's right in front of them) in this case it was NOT normal for something to outright disappear from a specific place without help.
Finally in exasperation i said out loud "if you're gonna live here the least you can do is not hide my stuff!!"
As i came back into the dining room that wretched lighter was sitting in the middle of my table.
Another trick i learned from my cousin is if things do go missing (keys, wallet, etc) leave a piece of candy out as a trade.
I used to do this periodically.... i might have to start again.

And Menehune (Hawaiian), Pygmies (in Greek mythology - not the African Pygmy tribes), Nisse (Scandanavian), etc. Also pixies, sprites, elves, dwarves, gnomes... the list goes on and on. Most if not all cultures have stories of little beings that are either mischievous and can be friendly or malicious. I always enjoy hearing the folklore.

If you went on in the house and and he came in with you he's going to give you a warning just like we sitting here you would hear something knock somewhere or bang somewhere. The 1st time it will be a little loud 2nd time it'll be louder th 3rd time will be loud if you don't get away from there fast you might be hurt bad.
