    1:39 That's the resonator. It's purpose is to smooth the airflow going into the airbox and also to quiet the engine a bit.

      I am trying to troubleshoot intermittent misfire issue on 7th gen civic. Please explain what would harm would leaking air gets in the air box. This engines does not use the Mass air flow sensor, I understand there is a slight risk of debris getting in airbox which will be stopped by filter. Secondly throttle body is located at the bottom of air box. so all of the extra air would still make its way to the throttle body.

    Another thing that kinda sucked about the 7th gen civics is the fact that they got rid of the double wishbone suspension which was a superior suspension design compared to the new single arm McPherson strut design.

    I've got a 2001 Civic XL manual transmission with only 81k miles on it. I'll have to check to see if my car has this problem. It RUNS GREAT and everything WORKS. I've only had it right at a month and haven't driven it much, I also have a 2000 Subaru Outback automatic with 180k miles on it and a 2002 Ford Focus ZX5 also with a manual transmission with 205k miles on it. Obviously the Civic gets the best mileage 28-30 round town with the AIR CONDITIONING on and 39-40 on the hywy. The Focus gets 25-26 around town and 30+ on the hywy with 2 other large people in the car, don't drive it much. The Outback gets 16-17 around town with AIR ON and 30 on the hywy without AIR ON. I drive the Outback if I need cargo space or if I know I will be caught in HEAVY TRAFFIC, manual is THE PITS in HEAVY TRAFFIC. I LOVE THE GAS MILEAGE I GET FROM THE CIVIC and it's a GOOD HYWY CRUISER.😮😊😊😊😊

    • @thronewalker1153

    The design is just fine LOL, the left portion of the intake is called a resonator it keeps the intake quiet for less noise inside the cabin. These engines don't need to breathe more the intake flows plenty of air for the stock engine. Your screws are stripped because people have abused them. Calling in a poor design is ignorant.

  • @MostacciolE

    YES! Just discovered this on a 2002 Civic EX. The fastening design is *CRAP*. The base's retaining plastic gets brittle and cracks away from the screw anchors, causing them to spin freely and/or fly out completely. Should have designed with retaining clips, you know, like everyone else does!! Replacement base is over $50... lame.

    That airbox issue is not a big problem, it's a user error on the person that is working on it or owner

  • @justinbelshe
    @justinbelshe Před 2 lety +3

    It's actually a good design, and the stripped screws aren't a design flaw, but operator error. If the screws weren't stripped, the intake would be very quiet.
    Also, power gains from switching to a short ram intake pipe are negligible.

    I just took mine off and drove it 600miles to a rally and back. I thought it was going to suck up a bunch of water but it stayed pretty dry.
    I believe that I lost some low end torque going up long hills by just leaving the intake open. I think that the vacuum effect in the long intake is designed to change the velocity of the air as it is drawn into the engine.
    It also sounds pretty cool if you just take it off. 😂
