A brief look at the wonderfully preserved site in Ercolano, Italy. Pompeii maybe more famous but it is not as interesting or as well preserved. If you are on a tight schedule I highly recommend visiting Herculaneum.

My father had the opportunity to visit Pompeii for the first time at age 5... in the mid-1920s. An unforgettable experience for a French kid, especially at the time - and when he took me there for MY first time, half a century later, we discovered together Herculaneum as well. I personally revisited the site four other times during the following decades. It’s a bit like strolling in the very streets and entering the very houses of that kind of Roman ghost-town some 2000 years ago - except the whole population seems to have just mysteriously vanished into thin air. Hope to get back to ‘Ercolano‘ one last time, as long as I’m still able to travel by myself!

We visited Herculaneum in May 2018 and it was beautiful . The only problem we had was our car was broken into at the onsite parking garage and it was an inside job . They didn't count on the fact that my wife speaks fluent Italian . The onsite attendants at first refused to call the Police. When they realized my wife understood perfectly what they were saying to each other one of the attendants decided to help us and he apologized for what we had to go through.

We went a couple of years ago and had a wonderful holiday, taking in this site too. One cannot imagine the trauma of those poor people. To be buried for centuries. I found it almost unbelievable that the beach was buried to such a depth.

I would love to see Herculaneum in person too! This is an excellent vid showing the real life of these people and sorrowfully showing their real deaths, so sad. Herculaneum was so beautiful at that time and is still very beautiful as the remains show today.

I agree that Herculaneum was more interesting than Pompeii because it’s more compact and I felt I was in a town, not just an archeological site. I loved walking through the many streets with buildings on either side. I also suggest visiting Herculaneum and watching a virtual tour of Pompeii.

The bricks weren’t “put in as a diamond” the walls were put together piece by piece brick by brick in a very specific pattern with each piece made to fit tightly in a specific area made for it because they had figured out the transference of energy from earthquakes having dealt with them for so long so they built accordingly so that they walls could effectively withstand and transfer that energy... it’s more evidence of the ingenuity and genius of their construction and didn’t have anything at all to do with looks
