Banjos are such peculiar instruments. I’ve never played one; heck I’ve never even held one. Fascinating, to see up close, though. Thanks.

Why do we have to tune the head tension to G#? Why not to G to get similar resonance?
What if we tune it higher or lower than G#?

1/2 or 5/8 bridge any light gauge strings

The 5th string on my banjo is sitting on the frets and from a side view the string sits lower than the other strings. The little white button the string sits on before going into the tuning peg sits very deep in the button. Is this normal? Do I need to change the button so the string sits away from the frets? I thank you for any help or input you can give me. I do have pictures I could send you.

The 5th string nut is referred to as a pip. It you want it to be level with the strings, you need to raise it. It's a pretty straight forward replacement, and can be adjusted to any height you want it to be.

@@ElderlyInstruments Thank you. Can I just turn it a 1/4 turn so the string sits on top and not down in the groove, or do I need to replace it? If I need to replace it, is it something that you sell or where would I go about procuring one? Thanks
