Severe Thunderstorm in Kokomo, Indiana with Severe winds, Hail. April 26, 2017.

- Finally into springtime! And April 26, 2017 was a day of interesting spring weather, as a thunderstorm complex originating in Missouri traveled northeastward into Indiana and initiated additional convection ahead of it. One of these more individual thunderstorms impacted Kokomo that evening, and brought with it severe winds, hail of dime to nickel size (estimated at our location), and EPIC clouds!! Although this day was remembered for severe weather here, we are nearing the one month anniversary of a tragic event in the storm chasing community.
On March 28, 2017, three storm chasers were involved in a vehicle collision just west of Spur, Texas. In a shocking and terrible event, Kelley Williamson, Randy Yarnall, and Corbin Jaegar were all killed in the crash. It's a loss that still leaves a hole in the storm chasing community, Kelley and Randy were great chasers who inspired many and in doing so potentially helped to shape the future of storm chasing, and Corbin Jaegar was a rising chaser who would have become better known in the coming years. My thoughts and prayers are still with their families and friends, and with the people who worked with them and were fans of them.
bro i was in the 7th grade when this happened and i started crying like a baby because down in our area there was a tornado warning🤣
GL Luna EDITS dont worry there. I hate tornado warnings too your not the only one
noHaxJustStrqvez oh wow what a hard ass
I was in 3rd grade when this happened
Melanie G yea other than storm chasers who know what their doing, who says “oh a tornado warning I oughta go outside and go near it to record it.”
@NohaxJustStqvez no proof.
Absolutely fantastic severe thunderstorm structure displayed here! This reminds me of a severe thunderstorm that I chased in July 2016 here, in Montreal, Quebec!
Thank you so much for sharing this!

Haha I hadn't noticed it until after I reviewed my footage later. Good eye.
This was in 2017 and now we are two years later. . . Yes the end is near. . . Folks you and I have been chosen by our Lord to be here at this time to see it. We are at the end of the human race.

Lol yeah it’s funny
Im actually surprised that based on that storm structure you only got pea size hail... That greenish core I would've guessed ping pong ball at least.
We got up to around nickle-sized hail, but I was surprised that it wasn't larger as well. There was a report of golfball-sized hail somewhere in Kokomo, but I'm not sure where relative to our location.
If you are put under a warning of any kind, make sure to stay safe!

This is a good video, Ethan. You are recording from the Nation's Heartland. I like your live coverage of these storms. It is good to see an honest weather report that focuses on the weather and not the reporter. Stay with it, and stay honest!!
Thank you! I do aim for the focus to be on weather, the subject of my footage, rather than myself. I do have narration and will film myself on occasion but yes the main focus is certainly the weather.
Waw very strong storm! Great video!
Thank you very much! Regarding intensity, it was the worst of 2017 here. I call the July 10 event worse, however, because that day featured a series of tornadic supercells into the nighttime hours.
That is one gnarly-looking t-storm.
Thank you! It sure was, the very dark clouds and greenish color in the precip core signaled that it was a large storm, and the roll cloud-like feature that occurs right before the rain showed that it was lifting moist air enough to create that feature. I would pay to see something like that right now.
I’ve seen up to softball size hail before. During a tornado in Madisonville, Kentucky in June 2014, I saw anything from pea size hail all the way up to golf ball size hail.
Awesome
Ethan B In early June, 2014 I had a rather large tornado in Madisonville, Kentucky. It leveled some homes, destroyed some and damaged many others (Including mine)

Awesome, I'm glad that you like it!
Idk if you’ll see this but amazing video keep it up
Thank you very much! I intend to, although the storm season has been rather quiet thus far in the Great Lakes.
Where I live storms don’t get too severe. Sometimes we’ll get gusty winds of abooout 10-15 mph but it’s not common and it’s usually not windy under the rain, the wind comes before it. (Sometimes. We do get a couple of freak hailstorms but those are not too common and if you’re indoors, it not a problem)
Gee whiz, sounds like I wouldn't do too well over there. I need my severe weather Lol. But living there does have the advantage of not having to worry much about destructive storms every storm season.
Yeah, where I live, I've been through my share of severe thunderstorm warnings, not one of them was severe. I've been through storms that deserve a warning, no warning, lol
Nice video enjoyed a lot thanks Ethan

Thank you!
Who here just got this video as a result of watching CZcams videos related to supercell storms?

Hell yeahhh
You know conditions are going south when the sky is that color in the middle of the day!
Absolutely!
A few days ago maybe weeks we had a severe thunderstorm warning Clouds were pitched black. Pea sized hail raining so hard the thunder was sooo loud omg
Sounds like a strong storm! Pitch black clouds are usually a sign that an incoming storm is fairly large (but this can depend also on time of day, atmospheric moisture content, and cloud heights).
@@EthanBWeather yeah but we were safe!
Are severe storms that bad because its happening in a couple hours where I live
Severe thunderstorms vary in their intensity, but if they meet severe criteria (wind gusts AOA 58 mph and hail of quarter size or larger) then they are capable of doing damage and causing harm. If you are in the path of a severe storm, take shelter away from windows on the lowest floor of a building. But don't panic, as the storm will likely be over shortly.
This is late and you’ve probably seen what the severe storms can do/cause. But where I live, (Indiana but not Kokomo, I live in Marion), some storms can be bad and other times, the weather people exaggerate. It’s never really as bad as they make it to be. Which is a good thing. But if they are actually severe, the winds are sometimes 60-80mph, hail isn’t usually that bad and flooding happens... tornadoes don’t really touch down, at least not the part of Indiana I’m in... but if they do, they’re usually weak. EF-0, maybe an EF-1... but it’s usually strong winds, lots of rain and hail...
wow man this is an amazing video Ethan
Thank you very much! A very nice thunderstorm, so much more than I've been able to get so far this year

LOL!
The severe thunderstorms are crazy up there. We get a lot of storms (I mean a LOT) in Florida. Occasionally, one or 2 will be severe. They typically come in as a gust front before the rain, with some gusty winds. They calm down a bit. The lightning and rain is the worst. Under the crazy downpours, its not super windy, but there will be some freak, strong periods of wind the first 5-10 minutes. Its more tropical weather, not those scary looking supercells.
I do enjoy those kinds of thunderstorms, but the separation of outflow winds from rain core typically indicates an outflow-dominant storm. However, with the high moisture down in Florida, torrential downpours aren't uncommon. Although I do love the severe weather and supercells in the Midwest, I do occasionally want a storm like you have down there!
I also live in Indiana and in my county we are also getting severe thunderstorms.
I saw that the SPC has a marginal risk in NW Indiana with a decaying line of storms in the northern part of the state. Could still be some isolated strong to severe storms.
That is a worst rain storm ever I have ever seen wow that is so much rain and I have to watch this.
Certainly a lot of rain.
That's so beautiful. What a great day.
Thank you, Soulful Terrain, it was a pretty awesome day!
That cloud sure is scary looking
Clouds like this often precede strong to severe thunderstorms, so be sure to stay in a sturdy structure if the sky looks threatening.
Great video, love that storm front
Thank you, I did as well!
wow you did get a nice storm.... sweet
Sure did, it was epic!
You can see the rain curtains that's so cool!!
Yep! It was an epic storm!
I used to live super close to where this was shot. We saw some pretty crazy fronts come in while I was there, but still nothing quite like that.
(I was also out of town when the November 2013 tornado hit and then we'd moved by the time the August 2016 tornadoes came through... though I was in town that day about half a mile from where the biggest one hit.)
Turns out I have pictures of that exact storm, I was in Kokomo that day and saw it coming, but was able to make it out of town and back home before it came through. We probably didn't get it as bad as Kokomo did
The southern part of Kokomo has seen some significant storms through the years.
Incredible Storm !! I rarely see storms like that in my area !!
Thank you, it was quite a thing to see! I don't see storms like this all that often either (2017 has been more active than normal here it seems, however)
I just had one today.
Great video
Nickle size hail?? I live in Schenectady and we have had ping ping ball/golf size hail,it was huge!!
Thank you. In this case it was nickle-sized, maybe some nearby quarters. Quarter is the biggest I've ever seen, I can't imagine what golf ball-sized hail is like! Sounds like it was!
I had a storm just just like this!! But the sky was this yellowish color and than it become Dark! A few whiles it was just like BOOM! BOOM! CRACK! SHLACK! I was like wow. Heart pounding a little bit, but I was fine.
Oh wow, anytime the sky turns a strange color with a thunderstorm, that's an indicator that it's probably on the intense side.
That's just like a normal day in Ireland🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Haha if that's true then I'm moving there
Just minus the thunder and lightning, during winter months it's raining like that every day haha
Ah okay
Dusko Kovac what’s the point with no thunder and lightning that’s the best part
I'm Irish.
This footage is so god damn good!
Do you really think so?
Chicago is in great with severe storms like tornadoes and floods also winter storms
Yeah Chicago gets some really bad ones on occasion.
Beautiful structure in the clouds.. you can almost see the dynamics of the system in the clouds, inflow vs outflow and RFD winds makes for a combination for some bad weather lol
Indeed it does! Bad and awesome weather, I enjoyed the structure on this storm more than any other this year save for the July 10, 2017 supercell.
Once in 2015 me and my dad was driving back from this one place after visiting Grandma and me n my dad was driving into this green sky. My dad spotted a wall cloud I saw it too. I was very scared high winds hail lightning hard rain everything. So when me n my dad came back my dad checked the news and if I'm not mistaken I think a tornado hit the gastation
(I can't spell gastation)
That sounds like an insane storm! Be sure that, in future cases, you pull over and seek shelter when such a storm approaches.
Carry on on with making more videos of thunderstorms and I enjoyed it and keep up the good work and I live in the uk where I live we don't get thunderstorms like we used to and we seem to get just rain and high winds and some sunshine
Glad you enjoyed it, and I will definitely have more videos! That sucks that you aren't getting as epic of storms like this as often anymore. We don't have many like this either, really, and the current problem is that we're entering summer in Indiana, which can sometimes bring us dry weather for a while. But it also means that at some point in the summer, we could have a derecho event.
Awww, I like the dedication at the end. :(
Thank you, this video was the first I released after their deaths, so I had to make a dedication to them.
I live just East of 31, less than 1.5 miles from the hospital where you are filming, and the hail only reached pea sized here while lasting about 2 minutes. No significant wind to speak of here.
Oh wow! That's quite a change with distance. I know there was a measured 73 mph wind gust near Sharpsville, and they weren't all the way up to that at the hospital but still very strong.
Ethan B It was almost surreal the way day seemed to end immediately, and night began. There was no sunset to speak of, it just went dark as those clouds rolled in. Compared to the tornadoes we had in August, this felt more ominous for some reason. I was at St. Joan of Arc school picking up my nephew during the tornado outbreak, and even though it was unexpected, I never got that "oh shit" feeling like I did when these storms passed through and night turned back into day, briefly. I have a couple of pictures taken from the St. Joan of Arc parking lot if you'd like to see them. By a couple, I literally mean 2. They were taken about 2:55pm, and showed an obvious tornado approximately 10 miles west of Dixon and maybe a quarter mile north of Lincoln.
Ethan B P.S. I tried to find your email address in the "about" section of your page, but I don't see one.
Awesome! Thanks.
Thank you very much Chris, and you're welcome!
Weird cloud at 1:27
Yes a very interesting and beautiful cloud. It's Cloud Atlas name is Volutus, but it's more commonly called a role cloud. In this case, it formed at the interface of relatively warmer (and therefore more buoyant) air ahead of the storm cluster and much colder, dense air within the strong downdraft. This isn't extremely common with severe storms, but it's certainly amazing to see! Roll clouds may also form along outflow boundaries where an arcus cloud (shelf cloud) has separated from the thunderstorm but maintains a horizontal rolling motion due to differences in air density.
Ethan you didn't put do not use without permission in your older videos which could have been why they stole the footage.
That's correct, although if they find it good enough then they'd probably try anyway. But back then I didn't think my videos were going to go anywhere
Hearing the birds talking at the end was nice ...

@Ryan Nimmo That's awesome, and I certainly understand not wanting to deal with a tornado! They are incredibly powerful and dangerous forces of nature. Storms themselves don't scare me, but nocturnal situations/very dangerous storms do scare me to an extent. The best storm chasers must always retain a sense of fear, because a lack of it leads to carelessness.
