Enpi - Shotokan Karate

  • The most popular image associated with kata is that of a karate practitioner performing a series of punches and kicks in the air. The kata are executed as a specified series of approximately 20 to 70 moves, generally with stepping and turning, while attempting to maintain perfect form. There are perhaps 100 kata across the various forms of karate, each with many minor variations. The number of moves in a kata may be referred to in the name of the kata, eg. Gojushiho, which means "54 steps." The number of moves may also have links with Buddhist spirituality. The number 108 is significant in Buddhism, and kata with 54, 36, or 27 moves (divisors of 108) are common. The practitioner is generally counselled to visualize the enemy attacks, and his or her responses, as actually occurring, and karateka are often told to "read" a kata, to explain the imagined events.
    In teaching the open handed kata, most styles of Karate start with a series of three, or sometimes two, very simple kata called blocking forms before advancing to five basic kata named Pinan in some systems and Heian in others. By working through this series (in order: Shodan, Nidan, Sandan, Yondan, Godan (except in Wado Ryu Karate, where Shodan and Nidan are reversed)) the practitioner learns all the basic stances and techniques before moving on to more advanced kata. Traditionally, kata are taught in stages. Previously learned kata are returned to in order to show more advanced techniques or ways of doing things, as beginners do not have the same knowledge and experience that practitioners further up the ranks have. It is not uncommon in some styles for students testing for Shodan (first rank black belt) to have to repeat every kata they have learned from the first belt, but at a "black belt" level, for example, with better technique, power, amongst others. This system is often used for the lower grades as well. The student will perform one new kata and one or two previous ones, to demonstrate how much they have progressed and how quickly they can learn new things.

    I'm in the process of studying the 4 brown/black belt katas - Bassai Dai, Kanku Dai, Enpi, and Jion - and I feel that this is the trickiest one to initially learn. There are so many new movements I have to learn and get used to. I know Kanku Dai is super long, but a lot of it is just repeating bits from previous Katas. On the other hand, it might be the hardest to master because of the flying kick part, which is probably more difficult than any other individual move in the 4 katas.

I did shotokan under a Japanese master a few years and I know a extraordinary Karate when I see it. I know that Kan Ku Dai is the most important and or representative Kata in ShotoKan, but Empi is my favorite aesthetically speaking. It has Shoaling Roots it is the only kata in ShotoKan that changes levels as it does truly the flight of the swallow.

      🤦‍♂️ The first karate masters were fighting against samurais. Samurais were the fully armored warriors, who used steel arms. Sometimes they could even attack peasants to get their possessions and money or just for fun. Karate was invented to protect from armored people (samurais, bandits, robbers.), using just your own hands and legs. These are two different things.

    im going to break the ice. I respect a lot kanazawa sensei, but he has numerous mistakes while there are many people saying that he hasnt... For example he always moves his head forward when he raise his knee. Sometimes he open his arms before performing shuto uke, doing a pre-movement

      +Rafael Paredes Kanazawa rules. .

    • @jamesbrodie13
      @jamesbrodie13 Před 7 lety +4

      The "pre-movement" he does is part of the technique, and important trapping the attacker's arm before striking the neck. There is a tendency to drop the "preparation" movement to look quicker, but this derives from ignorance of the function of the technique.

    • @Silverhead111
      @Silverhead111 Před 7 lety +1

      James Brodie Also, in katas we do telegraph the moves a bit more so that the move is clear. An example of this is shtoke, where we bring hand up all the way to the ear.

    • @jamesbrodie13
      @jamesbrodie13 Před 7 lety +3

      In application, everything is useful. Shuto uke is not really a block, except at the most basic level. Bringing the hand to the ear, while reaching forward with the other hand covers your head while receiving and deflecting the attacker's strike. The shuto strikes the attacker's carotid sinus, as your other hand(the hand at your solar plexus) traps his arm. The preparation movements serve a purpose in combat; they are not "just so the move is clear".
