  • In this video, I go into a bit of detail on why paid antiviruses are kind of not needed for the average user nowadays...here's my take on it! Let me know your thoughts down below!

Antivirus is a subscription because they need to have people to continuously analyze new viruses, improve the product and whatnot.

I definitely agree with that. Just laying out the options for free versus paid anti-virus products.

    Thank you for the video!
My problem with paying for antivirus software is that you'll always have to keep paying. If they had a lifetime flat fee, sure (as long as it's not something crazy like hundreds of dollars).
    *Rant warning:*
For anyone who is saying, "these people need to make money, do you expect everything to be free?" I say I understand, but there's a difference between getting financial support so you can pay your bills vs becoming a greedy multi billionaire company. If companies are going to ask for greedy subscriptions, don't be surprised when people push back. If they're allowed to ask us to buy expensive products, we're allowed to say that we don't want to spend $500 for 5 years (which btw, would actually be more, as the 'low' annual $100 subscription only applies to the first year.) If these companies have a million annually paying customers, they're easily making over $100,000,000 a year on that one product alone. Obviously, many antivirus companies have well over 1 million customers. Take Norton 360 for example. I couldn't immediately find 2023's stats, but I know they've been growing around 10% each year. In 2022 they had over 14 million members and profited $2,800,000,000 (2.8 billion for those of you skimming) above their operation costs. That's not a 'you're selfish, these people need to make money' problem. That's a 'you're defending a multi billion dollar company' to people, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck. Not everyone who is against subscriptions is against paying money for things. Just please be reasonable! No single person needs billions of dollars. Stop defending the absurdly rich. Thanks for reading my Ted talk.

The premium version is better because it scans the files you download or when you enter a website immediately. I agree that for a poweruser it does not make that of a difference, but for a normal user it may be dangerous to suggest not having an antivirus that do those scans in the background for them. but yeah, default AV is good nowawadays. For targeted attacks probably better to rely on these premium AV

I can appreciate both at the end of the day. It's just that some people like to hear their options. Both are good at the end of the day! Thanks for the comment!

Mcafee coming out here with the credit score check for $70 a year is probably the funniest shit I've ever seen

Well, you are literally getting daily updates for the subscription you are paying for... Otherwise who should pay for updating virus databases?
No real time protection and no firewall is also the reason why you shouldn't use a free product.
Another point of consideration is how popular the AV is. The more popular it is, the more chances of undetectable viruses there are because of hackers specifically targeting them.
Anyway, this is most definitely a bad take on AV software.

Someone else just commented the same thing. I appreciate the comment but this video was meant to educate that both are options for users. People are not required to pay for anti-virus software. They can use manual tools to check on these issues themselves. If they do not want to do that, then for sure! The best thing to do is subscribe so you can get background scans 24/7
Also, you 10000% still get updates without paying for a subscription. Dunno where you got that idea...lol.

@@JumperTheHero An average user doesn't need an active virus scan, they need a proactive scanning that prevents viruses from being executed in the first place. What point there is in knowing that you have a virus and curing it when it already had stolen your bank account details?
Updates without a subscription are working just to be a demo of what an actual product can do. These companies aren't charities. It's either paying users are paying for the product, or, well, you are the product and should ask yourself how it's monetized.

The percentage of the population that needs day one fixes for vulnerabilities is closer to zero than it is to one. These companies profit from paranoia and you've gone all in.
