  • 1980s Ecu controlled Toyotas had a built in diagnostic codes for the engine as well as the auto gearbox. To activate the system, you need to short Te1 with E1, then get in the car , insert the key, then turn to the ON position. Do not start the engine. Also make sure your AC and radio is turned off. Your OD lights and Check Engine Light should blink. If both blinks continuously that means there are no error codes recorded. If there are error codes , either the OD or the CEL will blink with pauses in between. if the OD blinks with pause in between, the code is Auto GB related. If the CEL blinks with pauses in between, there are error(s) with the engine.
If say, the OD light blinks 4 times , pauses then blinks 2 times, that is error code 42(speed sensor error). If there are more codes, there will be a long pause in between. The codes will repeat and cycle through repeatedly until you turn the key to OFF. Take note of the codes and check it against your model's TSRM.
To clear the codes for the auto GB, pull the DOME fuse for 10 mins. To clear codes for the engine, pull the EFI fuse for 10 mins.

If that is the case, your igniter should be the culprit. you sure your RAV4 does not use coil on plug ?

@@luckymutibo9848 then check the crank position sensor. If the ecu does not receive a position signal the ecu will stop spark. I know you have spark now, but if your engine shuts off suddenly it could be missing this signal intermittently.
