I coached running, and every time I see one of her races, I am astounded by her form and speed and endurance. Every year or two, a female high school runner rises to the top of the field, but Katelyn appears to be a once in a generation runner. It will be fascinating to watch her career progress.

Here are 2 good Tuohy 800 Races. These are her 7th and 8th grade years I think so not new. These are from new balance nationals at the Armory (N.Y.) whic just has a great excitement from the crowd and well skilled announcers. New York is a big running state so they get excited for this. I listed the year and the leg she ran as these are 4 x 800's. If you want to see where her form and fire come from then these team events are when she go it-check the 2015 DMR in particular. These video's are free on the NBN website and you can always check the other DMR's which she did each year as the Anchor leg (mile) or other events.. I'll include the 2015 & 2016 DMR's plus her middle school mile meet record.

Her turnover, her arm swing, her knee lift and stride length. It’s like she is running a 200 m race, but she is able to hold it for 800 m. I know she trains hard, but so do many other female distance runners. Some people are blessed with a very efficient cardio-pulmonary system.

Can truly speak for my own personal self of competing competitively year round in all seasons -- Track ,XC ,Road racing
So , I do know ,as to what I am talking about ,as well as why I can say what I say .
Not all of us can falsify such claims -- nor do all of us need to .
My own past running ability -- talent ( raw to some ) ,truly did speak for itself when competed .
May not run any more ( Elementary --- High School ) ,but my athletic career did speak for itself .

Big fan of Katelyn's running. But remember this was from 2 years ago when she was just killing it. Didn't run much track at all last year and basically none this year. She'll even tell you XC this year and even last was so-so. She's for sure still done a lot last 2 seasons but not close to 2018. Just been under a lot of pressure to always set records. Some of it could be when a young lady's body matures changes can happen athletically. I'm sure she'll adjust in time. It's also tough always being judged against your previous self. Regardless she should be a part of a sick team at N.C. State next year. Starting with XC. They should be fun to follow.

Watching numerous K.T. videos I am reminded of so many of the lines in the movie 'Without Limits.' In particular the snippets of advice given by coach Bill Bowerman to Steve Prefontaine. In particular in his home Bill's wife commentating something along the lines (watching a film of one of his high school races) 'Impressive isn't he,' and Bill replying 'It's fine at High School level but at an international level it's a disaster.' And of course Bill's reprimands given direct to Steve telling him that his need to always take the lead costs him time.
Consistently bursting into the lead at immensely high speed early on during races can be due to a combination of factors - too much zeal, but equally - insecurity, particularly over the strength of one's finish. Possibly Katelyn is undefeated against girls of her own age and if so that in itself will cause immense pressure. Fear of losing can be psychologically crushing.
Even at the highest levels in any sport there usually exists immense weakness and naivety amongst coaches on teaching mental strengthening. K. needs to work on such and fortunately there are numerous top drawer publications out there to help. Never, never, never totally sign your life over to any coach.
Every athlete's competitive career is relatively short. Make the most of every minute and never neglect to study.

However, I will say the 2:09 PR that she does have is pretty impressive, she hasn't lost a 1500 or Mile since February 2018, and she hasn't lost a 3k or 5k against high schoolers since JANUARY 2017, and her only two defeats?

Okay , she had a nice decent performance, finished in first place ,not too much competition.
Her time was decent( HS --- ? )
However ,haven ran Track( out/ indoor -- occasionally ) competitively during my 15 yrs of doing such.My best 800 m race
( Elementary school ) ,without comperition was either ( 2:12 / 2:14 ) during my State meet in CA
    where I tripled as State Champion that year ( 800,1500,3000 m )
Made Personal Records -- PRs in all three -- believe to have broken the State meet time ( 1 ) that day-- however ,considering it was so long ago ,could be mistaken on the later . Performed the same races all the way through my high school years -,of course now , ( 800 ,1 mile ,2 mile) and ran several relay teams during meets .
Competed both in road racing --
    ( 32 Km ; 10 mile )
Did even race walking at times for practice ( change up )
Even still competed during injuries ( pull hamstring-- both ) until injuries could no longer be
    " hidden "
Many good experiences during 15 yrs of different reasons-- both on & off the track .
Traveled throughout the country in both Track & XC
Traveled to Euriope ( vacation & training ) during those years.
Met thousands of others runners ,coaches ,clubs ,teams meet organizors, fellow runners & parents,Track officials ,Track gun starters . The list continues .
Even had team / club coaches literally ask me who I was --
    " are you. ____ _____ " ?
And naturally would let them know that I was .With their responses be potentially bewilderment / astonishment / fear / nervousness / athletes feeling threatened by my presence in event / meet ,etc . .
    Whose to say ,truly .
I just saw my running ability as both an ability but potentially that of a " curse " while just being raw talent that I managed to perfect to a certain level ,a certain degree .
    Nothing more .Nothing less .
So , this young girl , is good.
But as my team always informed me of -- more often then not:
" There is always someone stronger ,more determined, more hungry for , more deticated , far more devoted to the sport , who wants it more ,has far more of the " burning desire aka fire ".
Basically ,that I was not the best in all of Northern CA ( during my time ) .
That someone is always " gunning for you / me -- you now ,have a target on the back of you / me "
Honestly never truly did I100 % understand such claims -- until much older .
All I ever did was just simoly ---
    R U N
For that's what I was Born to do
    Born 2 Run
And so is this young girl
Whether win or lose ; PR or not -- comp or not -- running is what she does .
Good attitude ,self believing -- will help guide her through much more

I saw a video of a horse who had spent her time pulling a wagon of some sort. The owner put her up for sale. A lady bought her and 3 years later the horse became the world champion jumper. It just took someone who saw something no others saw. I don't t do well remembering names but your comment about Secretariat reminded me. I have seen film of the race at Belmont and it was amazing.

This gives a little sense of how crazy and freakishly good Mary Cain was. Having just turned 17, she went 1:59.51 at the Pre Classic. A 2:10 800 wins handily in most girls high school 800s, as we see Tuohy here. Cain would have beaten her by what, 70 meters?
