Most people snorted their food back in the '70s. I know I did.
Wow that skit made a lot of sense, so conan gets called to a meeting with his boss finds out that conan bought his mother a new car. The comment "very fancy for a guy like you" makes it all the more suspicious. He asks where he gets the money for his purchases. Then he talks about how "andrew" was ironically there.

the thing is, it doesn't matter whether this is how anyone ate in any 1970s movie. the point is that it's believable these mannerisms would have been popular for actors in 70s movies to use while eating, and that's what makes the bit/character work. it's more a commentary on how bizarre it is that the way we publicly mime eating food changes over the course of a few decades than it is a specific impression of a movie scene. and it's funny because it's so specific.

Movies from the 1970's were the last time actors actually ate the food on their plates during scenes. Nothing more annoying than watching a food scene in a film, and no one is touching their meal. (actually, Tarantino is really good with these scenes, but not many others)
