An ex Pontefract resident here, now in Selby. The arched building in the Market Place is the old Butter Cross, where dairy goods were sold under cover. A common structure in many post medieval market towns. The church was destroyed during the sieges of the Castle in the Civil Wars of the 17th century. The Castle was the last place to hold out for the king, even After Charles 1st was executed, it declared for his son Charles 2nd hence the town motto translated from the Latin 'After the death of the father we are for the son'. The Castle was damaged in the wars, but Cromwell ordered it's destruction afterwards, so that it couldn't be defended again. It then became planted with Liquorice bushes, like everywhere around. Haribo still make sweets in the town, one of 3 factories, where you can get your Pontefract cakes. These are further up town then you went in the video. The window tracery at the church ruin comes from the great big window you noticed when you went in! There is more of the Castle left than you think, certainly enough to take a look at. Get a look at it on line with English Heritage.

You missed out on the castle mate, there's a shop in there that sells liqurish cakes. And also there's loads of the castle left. Dungeons you can tour. Views to die for,you can see peak district, pennines and north yorks moors from up at the castle top where the flag pole is. You definitely should go back and do a vid.

The ruins at All Saints Church are i believe the remains of the original church which Henry VIII had destroyed like so many other churches also the affair that led to Catherine Howards execution i believe started at Pontefracrt Castle
