I bought the ‘45 of this in 1971 when was 11. It was the first of many Helen Reddy’s records I would buy. I was lucky enough to have seen her in concert 3 times in the 70s and she was amazing. RIP Ms. Reddy ❤️
I love Helen Reddy. She was a huge impact on me as a young girl growing up in the 70s. Her music is absolutely beautiful. She was a beautiful soul. When we lost her this year, I cried.
Yep, she was something special. Not only a beautiful lady, but a voice to match. I'm 58, and had a crush on her in the 70s, I especially loved her facial expressions whenever she performed...really made a song her own, particularly this song. Anyway, thanks for the post, and the analysis.
I don't think people understand how difficult this song is to sing because Helen makes it look so effortless. Well, I didn't realize it was difficult. Helen and the song are both beautiful. Thanks for posting!
What a great choice for a reaction, Dax. I think you really were spot on here. This is by far my favorite versions as well. One of the finest voices of the era! Excellent reaction.
I see her performance of this song gets to you the same way it does to me. The definitive version, and it’s because of her voice _and_ the accompaniment, particularly the soft intro. Kind of breaks your heart
Beautiful lyric. Beautiful arrangement. Wonderful voice and clear diction. Like all the greats Sinatra Ella Bing Judy Barbara, great diction. Yes we old miss those early '70s stars. What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life by Barbara is another meaningful song.
Love your review here. I feel the same way about her. I am Woman changed my life at 12 but it is sweet to go back and see some of her great performances and appreciate her amazing talent all over again . and it does not hurt that she was also a very articulate and confident woman involved in political activism back in the day. Long Live the Queen !
Thanks for the reaction, tax! I agree with you 100% that this is a classic, and Helen’s voices superb. You might think about commenting on her versions of “you’re my world” and “you and me against the world”. Also classics! And another more upbeat tune she did, called “save me”.
All due respect to Yvonne Eliman, this is the best rendition and Helen made it all hers and blew any other recording of this song out the window. RIP my love 💋
I know what you mean when you said, "I just love that" when Helen sang: "Just could not cope" I was in love with a girl that had the same facial expression many years ago. i had not seen it since.
I saw this on Broadway, the original, as a school field trip. Sorry but I love the original singer and it's not even close when I hear others try to sing this beautiful song.
thank you for the review--I now have a deeper appreciation for the song--I never would have noticed the point by the cool guy from Wings of Pegasus about the breathing, She is beautiful in appearance but her voice is much more!
Sooo. Beautiful. There was another version here on CZcams where she was wearing a white dress but I can’t find it, and I think it was even if that’s even possible!
well stated. Just watched the Helen Reddy Movie (I am Woman).. It seems to be pretty accurate to her interviews she did over the years. love when she is recording studio and when she is starting to sing this song... the producers are quite seeing what Helen and Husband are hearing then 1/3 of the way though when she hits the course.. reminds me of the Karen Carpenter Story when Karen is in the studio and the she starts singing "All of my life" in the wrong key, then Richard says to try a different key....then.............. I go numb.
Thank you for reacting to Helen. I remember listening to her as a child snd this certainly brings a tear to my eye. I have sent a request to a Filipino vocalist Called Morissette to do a cover of this song. Like Helen she has the skill to do justice to it. I would love you to react to Morissette sing Could You Be Massiah it is brilliant Cheers
I was always a big fan of hers. I do not think anyone else can really sing this. Phoebe Snow might have been able to sing it because of her four octave range. RIP HR
Regarding her distinctive vibrato at the ends of notes in the regular register, there's a version of this song when she delivers vibrato on the highest note in the song. It blows me away. Listen to this version: czcams.com/video/i12PWD9EQvE/video.html and at time marker 2:20 the brief vibrato is at high note and has some sort of strong emotional effect on me. I've tried to find another version of her singing this song where she trills that high note, but this is the only one I found. I wish she did it every time.
Thanks for this memory Dax. I remember this song well. I had the Jesus Christ Superstar double album but can’t remember what happened to it. Yes Helen is awesome. Do you know what variety show she was performing this on? I can’t recall.
@@daxmusix Thanks for this review. I think this performance was originally from the Morecambe and Wise Show in the UK in 1973. I love Helen's performance and watch it often. The production values - the musical accompaniment, the lighting, the camera angles - were perfect. Like you, I can't believe Helen's version never went to number one - it was such a moving performance.
Although I love this original version which is very pure and gentle, I prefer the more powerful and theatrical way she performed it later in her career as posted on you tube recently by ReddyRockedThe70s I’d be interested to hear if anyone agrees.
I first heard this song by Yvonne Elliman and fell in love with that version. Since that time I have heard Ms Reddy often and recognize that her version is superior, but I still prefer the original. I recall one other time that happened to me. "You light up my life" from the movie of the same name. I fell in love with the movie version, and later it became a monster hit by Debbie Boone. I always prefered the original. czcams.com/video/oJfRc5rzXdo/video.html movie version czcams.com/video/j3ssmH8vjf4/video.html Hit version
An amazing vocal performance, and really like your enthusiasm and comments - but please stop interrupting the music to make those comments - this destroys much of the effect of the performance - let the videos play through and then replay parts when you express your opinion - if you want to make brief comments occasionally while the music is playing that's fine - just don't stop the music!
I see where you are coming from in a kind of aesthetic, sonic manner, but the impact for me is far greater with Yvonne Elliman because the emotion/pathos is very inviting. Helen's version is more cerebral and keeps me at an emotional distance. It would be interesting to hear Chaka Khan, a master vocalist as well as vocal empath deliver this song. Music is an emotional experience to me and while someone may be technically perficient (sp) if there is no "soul" I'm not moved. And so it is with Helen for me. She's a good singer, but I don't feel that spark in anything I've ever heard her do.
Totally disagree. Elliman's "disco-style" voice was ok for the song, but is not even in the same universe with Reddy's performance (and I am an Elliman fan)
Another one of those 70's female voices that are so magical. Love Helen Reddy...
RIP Helen. Beautiful woman and singer. There will never be another.
Perfect diction and perfect interpretation of the best female vocalist!
Love this song ❤ Helen sings it so beautifully ❤️😍
There is no one who can sing this song like Helen Reddy! Helen has a range like no other!
I bought the ‘45 of this in 1971 when was 11. It was the first of many Helen Reddy’s records I would buy. I was lucky enough to have seen her in concert 3 times in the 70s and she was amazing. RIP Ms. Reddy ❤️
This is BEAUTIFUL! In every sense.
😲 Omg I used to LOVE this song back in the Day. She was such an elegant singer; lovely 💚
I love Helen Reddy. She was a huge impact on me as a young girl growing up in the 70s. Her music is absolutely beautiful. She was a beautiful soul. When we lost her this year, I cried.
I completely understand what you are saying. She got me through my teen/early adult years.
😮i completely agree with your assessment. Her voice is so crystal clear and facial expressions play out the stiry. Fabulous rendition and great review
Agree 100 per cent. What a natural beauty she had.
Yep, she was something special. Not only a beautiful lady, but a voice to match. I'm 58, and had a crush on her in the 70s, I especially loved her facial expressions whenever she performed...really made a song her own, particularly this song. Anyway, thanks for the post, and the analysis.
I never realized this was such a complicated song until I started listening to folks like you. She makes it seem so effortless.
She's so beautiful and her singing!
I don't think people understand how difficult this song is to sing because Helen makes it look so effortless. Well, I didn't realize it was difficult. Helen and the song are both beautiful. Thanks for posting!
Extraordinary ❤️

Love her. You could really see the genuine connection amazing
I am so inspired by this woman. She knows exactly what she’s doing.
I feel like I’m hearing this song for the first time. Thank you.
1972 version. Loved and missed in Australia and around the world. Thank God her voice remains...
I see her performance of this song gets to you the same way it does to me. The definitive version, and it’s because of her voice _and_ the accompaniment, particularly the soft intro. Kind of breaks your heart
Watching you admire her voice and her as a person moved me to tears.
I love this song she had the it.She sings her heart out
Your tribute too this performance brought me to tears thank you
Dearly missed 💜
Sings from her heart and soul
Bravo Helen 🙏
From Melbourne Australia
She was wonderful, and she owned this song.
Good and generous analysis.
Thank you, and BTW, you have the name of my favorite band of all time. 😉
@@daxmusix Mine too. We can all share the sound.

I love your appreciation and analysis of this performance. I feel exactly the same. Thanks.
Amazing!!
I was there at the troubadour 4 nights that week but I never talked to her unfortunately. Much to my chagrin
Yes great iconic song,It's as though shes known or been in this relationship
Thanks for the reaction, tax! I agree with you 100% that this is a classic, and Helen’s voices superb. You might think about commenting on her versions of “you’re my world” and “you and me against the world”. Also classics! And another more upbeat tune she did, called “save me”.
My mother had this album
I loved it and this song was my favorite
All due respect to Yvonne Eliman, this is the best rendition and Helen made it all hers and blew any other recording of this song out the window. RIP my love 💋
She's the only one that sings it the way it's suppose to
I know what you mean when you said, "I just love that" when Helen sang: "Just could not cope" I was in love with a girl that had the same facial expression many years ago. i had not seen it since.
When she sings you believe every word
I saw this on Broadway, the original, as a school field trip. Sorry but I love the original singer and it's not even close when I hear others try to sing this beautiful song.
thank you for the review--I now have a deeper appreciation for the song--I never would have noticed the point by the cool guy from Wings of Pegasus about the breathing, She is beautiful in appearance but her voice is much more!
The best! Such a beautiful version of this song. Incomparable ❤️. Nobody sounds like Helen Reddy. RIP Ms Helen Reddy💐
Рэдди была прекрасна.
No one sings this like Yvonne Elimann.
Sooo. Beautiful. There was another version here on CZcams where she was wearing a white dress but I can’t find it, and I think it was even if that’s even possible!
Of course we know who we like to sing this song.

This song will always be a deeply religious song for me moreso than a pop love song. It's one of my favorites from a musical or rock opera.
I was always a big fan of hers. I do not think anyone else can really sing this. Phoebe Snow might have been able to sing it because of her four octave range. RIP HR
Kate Cebarano did a good version in the 1992 Australian Revival of JCS. Not quite in Helen Reddy's league, but darned good.
Regarding her distinctive vibrato at the ends of notes in the regular register, there's a version of this song when she delivers vibrato on the highest note in the song. It blows me away. Listen to this version:

No, Barbara, I still don’t know which variety show that was. I tried to find it but couldn’t. Thanks!

I heard that version, but imo this original version is WAY superior.
Try Kate Cebrano another Australian who played MM around a decade or so ago here in Aus. Maybe not as classic as Helen but really worth a listen
I agree completely!
Great review, analysis, but a few too many commercials.
Thank you. I’m afraid I can’t do anything about the commercials. That is CZcams. But thanks again!

Can you hear the Australian accent ?
No, I can’t. In fact, I usually can’t detect the British accent in the Beatles.
In My Opinion, Yvonne's Version is By Far The Best Version of This Song! I Like Everything's All Right Combined With I Don't Know How to Love Him!

All due respect, Yvonnes version is the only version, she sings with way more passion, the inflections are unnecessary
Totally disagree. Elliman's "disco-style" voice was ok for the song, but is not even in the same universe with Reddy's performance (and I am an Elliman fan)
She’s prettier with short hair she wears later
I don't agree at all the original is the best
