- In 1949, Wells Blackshear and his son Harold began designing and building their own home in South Austin, guided by the recycled 18th-century longleaf pine timbers and the existing old-growth trees on the property. Cutting down the minimum possible trees, they built the home nestled amongst pines. According to his son, Wells had an innate sense of scale and proportion, envisioning the building in his “mind’s eye” and working without drawing, allowing the house to evolve during construction.
When Jay Billig purchased the property in 2014, the Bauhaus-inspired home was in need of repair. Wanting to preserve the original craftsmanship, Billig simply opened up the home a bit to allow light and views to be accessible from any point. The upstairs studio has always been a rental and Billig removed a dividing wall to increase the experience of “living in a treehouse”. Borrowing from Frank Lloyd Wright, he painted the ceiling a lighter shade than the walls to give more feeling of space.
Downstairs the floor plan follows the slope of the hill and steps down over several levels despite being all of one floor. Huge windows cover the back wall so that the backyard appears to enter the kitchen and dining room.

Definitely a forever home and thank goodness you kept the original tiles 🌟
Gorgeous home! The multi-pane windows, with no draperies, and views into nature, impart an almost Japanese aesthetic.
Great space and I like the original tiles. Glad he kept them.
Kirsten, I've been following you for years and you never fail to locate absolute beauty! Thank you
You have done a wonderful job restoring and adapting this house. I love all the little nooks and crannies for storage. I would add only one thing...several bird feeding stations. I could hear the birds but not see them. Bird watching is a great hobby for kids and with all the trees a natural addition.
I’m loving the fact that you have honoured the trees, most people would chop them down & not give a thought about it... not only does it look great your looking after the environment! Looks amazing I could easily live here.
Well I should hope so. It's a million dollar plus home.
So glad he kept original tiles!
Beautiful space. Lovely flow!
That’s the most amazing house! I love that he’s kept the original tile in the bathrooms. I’ve always wanted a house with original antique tile in the bathrooms. I wouldn’t ever tear it out unless it was in too bad of shape.
His mirror trick works well
I'm seriously about to use that.
The only one.
I need to see floor plans; I got lost in a good way. Awesome floor plan.
@@salskars6637 i agree definitely
Well placed mirrors do an awesome job. I used an acrylic one outside in the pretty small backyard at my parents house to visually expand the place. A wooden fence you can't see through "opened" by a narrow pergola framed passage with the mirror a bit tilted at it's backside. Until you stand directly in front of it, you just see plants in it. It tricks you brain to imagine it's going on. Even more as fence does interrupt the visual axis forcing your eyes to focus either the fence or the plants behind.
Interrupting visual axes (bushes, small trees, ...) is a neat trick to "enlarge" small places.
I love the pink n maroon bathroom tiles plus how he used them in kitchen. Magnificent renovation. His love and respect for the home, it's designer and surrounds is obvious. Great job.
This is wonderful! I love that you kept the original tile, pink and blue
It is so nice to see a beautifully renovated house that isn't completely "white or greyed" out. It's fantastic, I'm watching it for 3rd time!
Location location location !!! Simply wow !!! I absolutely love and adore trees and Neighborhoods with Mature Trees are a Treasure Find !!! I love that story of how he was riding his bike in 1989 and came across the house !!!! Somethings are so meant to be !!! I love the way he has opened everything up without damaging the original aesthetic of the house !!! It's only 2 miles from downtown yet it feels.like they are in the middle of a forest !!! The mirrors near the windows is a very clever touch of maximising natural light !!! Great job and lovely Homely treehouse !!!!💚🌳🏡🌲💚
For me old fashioned houses like these are vintage homes...takes you back in time while living in it🙂👍
Marvelous home and renovation. Love how you kept the 40's-50's pink tile!! Looks boss. Lovely, thanks for sharing.
Kayinfso I felt the same way about the pink tiles when I first looked at them I was like ieww, but then seconds later I was like, ya know what I love it
Pink tile will make a come back soon. Everything does.
I love the original blue tile too.. reminds me of the house I grew up in. We had a burnt orange tile just like that in the kids bathroom. It’s so nostalgic.
The house I grew up in had pink tiles in the bathroom I used
The pink tile has a slight tie to Texas. “Mamie pink“ tile, named after Mamie Eisenhower. She met Dwight Eisenhower in Texas (Fort Sam Houston.)
Yes, I love that he kept the tiles. There in great condition. Great house
I absolutely love his home!! I noticed the nod to Frank Lloyd Wright immediately and I love that he kept the original pastel colored tiles!!
Cheers
Awesomely beautiful design. Rounded corners and bright wall colors. Looks like 1920s-1930s style.
4:30 - really cool optical illusion
Amazing home, I love seeing such architecture preserved, and the Frank Lloyd Wright influence to the upgrades is unmistakable. Thanks Kirsten!
Beautiful! Great the way he retained the original character of the home! ❤️
Great home, so glad he kept the original tiles. I had that same pink color combo in a house years ago and loved them.
.hate it but love it. Wouldn't change.
That would be the first thing I’d change (not a fan of pink in anything but flowers).
Thank you Kirsten for always bringing us these wonderful spaces.
I love the original pink tile upstairs and blue tiles downstairs! So glad he saved them!!
WOW, what a perfect accent the tile makes withthe cement ceiling...brilliant...
I LOVE that you kept the old pink tile!!! I’d been begging my step-mom to keep her old pink tile and she was so irked by it that she finally removed it 😢 I think it’s classic and with mirrors and white accessories, you can really modernize it while staying true to the intent of the original design. Well done!
Keeping the original bathroom tile fits so perfectly with that house. Everything he has done is absolutely beautiful. What a unique and special piece of architecture.
It does have a Frank Lloyd Wright feel to it.
Kim H has nothing to do with the work product. separate the person from the artistry.
Indeed
It doessss
Love the house, love the thoughtful way that the owner has approached the renovation. There's something about the visible lower roofline when inside the upper story that is super cozy.
I totally love the window trick in the upper kitchen and bathroom. I would have never thought of that. So neat.
I love everything about this home 💙
What a truly wonderful experience of intelligence, ecological sense, passion, creativity🙂👌💖
I love this house...... So would love to live here. Wonderful that it was designed for the lot with keeping the trees and the multiple levels. Every view is perfect - serene. His renovation is wonderful. Made a wise decision keeping the original tiles. The history of the timbers used just makes it extra special.
Beautiful... The wisdom of simplicity. The luxury of efficiency.
I've always loved the graphic quality of those metal framed industrial windows. Makes me wonder if the builder found a factory that was being torn down, to recycle them like he did the timbers.
I own a condo in Seattle in a mid-fifties complex that has much the same kind of esthetic; the tile in the bathroom is pink, too, but with black trim. The very simple storage/mirror arrangements he used throughout set off the quirks of the original architecture.
this is such an airy and cozy house . I love the fact that they have a small garden up on the terrace and the view from absolutely all the windows in the house is so precious and green... full of tree branches.. such a lovely house :) the upstairs bathroom ambient is so quiet and so fresh like a breath of fresh air; and i just love the contrast between dark window frames and the green outside, very elegant; i would move in without thinking twice
This is literally a great show about a literal great house.
I love it. I absolutely love it! And the storage that he came up with is genius.
Love the design of the home and how it is tucked into the trees. I am happy that he was able to buy the home for himself and his family.
Respecting the trees.. this is literally one of the most beautiful dwellings I've seen. Love the multi-level floors. Kudos!
I love mid century modern, and this home is a beautiful, unique example of it done so well. I really like the white stucco house color and all the refined touches within. The wood working is gorgeous. But the windows, living roof over the garage, and tree house view is what makes it so gorgeous.
It's designed was influenced by the Bauhaus School of architecture, furniture, and industrial design of the 1920s -1933. It was shut down by the Geman government in 1933. When the Bauhaus staff began emigrating throughout the world it became the Internation Style that would last until the 1970s. Tel Aviv in 2004 was named to the list of world heritage sites by the UN due to its abundance of Bauhaus architecture. It had some 4,000 Bauhaus buildings erected from 1933 onwards. This precedes the mid-century style of architecture. Mid Century Modern is an American design movement in interior, product, graphic design, architecture, and urban development that was popular from roughly 1945 to 1969, during the United States' post-World War II period.
@@mancinidesignbuild Thank you so much for taking the time to explain Bauhaus design and it's origins to me. Fascinating. Though, I am a yoga teacher by trade, I love architecture, and am a designer in heart. I'll be looking more into Bauhaus, and will google some Tel Aviv examples of it.
This house is beautiful! Almost an architect Gerrit Rietveld house. He restored it to a stunning place, modern but loyal to it's design. The most gorgeous treehouse ever. Thanks for showing is this beauty, Kirsten.
Yes, well spotted. The dining chairs he built look as if he shook up Reitveld with Wright and Mackintosh.
@@chezmoi42 Perfect mix. Love it.
Beautiful design ,reminds me a lot of my childhood with the furnishings ..whoops!..I gave my age away lol 😀
I live in this area, in case you’re wondering the homes start at $1.5mil USD
Wow crazy ...so this guy is a millionaire!
@@rainbowfrequency1 I wouldn’t know but if he bought it ten years or more ago I suspect he got it for a much fairer price. The prices in Austin have skyrocketed and despite the pandemic recession there are still sales and increases happening.
@@user-wc1em7pc2p : For many Californians who have to leave Austin is one of the most wanted destinations. So house prices will only go up in Austin for the foreseeable future.
@@enlighteneddoggo5803 Austin's rising prices relative to other cities went up at a higher rate. There are plenty of articles about it that are free to read.

Such a beautiful house! Great that they have kept some of the original features inside and mainly outside.
The wright aesthetic
love the mirror cabinets in the corners
& applaud saving the tile to preserve part of the original interior as homage to its past.
Beautiful house with beautiful surroundings, blending all in with nature !
What a beautiful example of siting a house to the lot! Love both the inside and the outside of it. Well done with all the changes you've made, as well. It's a stunning piece. :)
I love the pink tiles. They were popular color choice when the inherited renovation was done. I have seen it in a friends house and they decided to NOT get rid of it but did new bathrooms in other two bathrooms.
These colors were very popular in the 50's
I had pink tile in a bathroom to a mid-century house that I bought. I painted the bathroom gray (at a friends suggestion) and it completely transformed the room.
May I suggest a website called Retro Renovation. I have a GE steel kitchen in pink. Lots of MCM designs.
Beautiful house! I love the windows and views, literally :-)
Enjoyed how he rethought the house, saved the tile, etc. Love the use of mirrors to expand the windows!
That's a very interesting shower / tub in the pink bathroom.
Literally literal.
Right
This guy literally needs a thesaurus.
I was hoping someone else made this comment!
I came to comments to make this same comment. Well done
You could be total wasted if you played drinking game everytime he said "literally" LOL
How much beauty in this world! ... and your channel , i love it!
Agreed
What a beautiful home and setting. Love that he saved those tiles. They are in perfect condition!
This is the most beautiful house I’ve seen, amazing location and renovation, bravo 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
me too i love the interior of the house so beautiful
Not enough good things can be sad about this house ! The FLW feel is prevalent at every turn. And your artistic influence brilliantly permeates the structure in a way not seen or appreciated on most dwellings modern or otherwise. I live in West Hartford Ct..and we have one house of this type/style built in 30s.
Until now I thought I seen the best of this architecture. Then I saw this video and im stunned for lack of better word. One would be blessed to exist in such an amazing environment !!..Thank you for sharing your home and the story behind it..Gregg Savage.
I love the pink tiles!!!!
Just breathtaking! Thank you...
I want nothing more than to live in this home. But I love living in California, born and raised. Gives me inspiration for when I want to purchase a home ❤️❤️😍
I have watched dozens of your videos and think this house is as close to perfection as any of them. Thank you - for all of them.
I’ll be the happiest woman in the whole entire world living in this house. What a magical place so connected to the outside and those beat trees! 😍
The trees are narled and beautiful..the restricted budget when this home was first built made it an understated building with good bones..the windows are such a great enhancement...thanks for this one.
Another fantastically edited video! Thank you for sharing this home and this man's hard work.
It is so pleasing that you retained the original tiles. They bring in the seventies charm and kind of history to the house. You truly have a firm grasp of what materials and colours to use and their effect on the human psych.
The window views are reminiscent of Fallingwater. He did a lovely job of capturing the spirit with the addition of the corner mirror storage.
The trees are more important than most people think, for cooling and beautiful lightning all day long and the calming effect they are giving us!
Awesome, I love how you maximized the space & the windows & the treehouse effects & love the wood inside. Not so much for the 50's tile, however would be happy in a place like this myself. I've moved around way too much, so I love its homey feel to it. I'd love to live in a treehouse, that would be one way to minimalize my space.
Wow! Beautiful home! I loved hearing all the history of it. Really clever to do the mirrors and storage in the windows. I love the Bauhaus style and how it was built with reused materials. So ahead of it's time!
i love everything about it. beautiful
What a spectacular design job on a house that needed that appreciation of what it had to offer. I'm blown away. And the location! I love being impressed by all the ideas that went into this, hundreds of ideas... I like it as much as my house! My house that I am getting tired of working on actually. It's frustrating not to be able to make a a big fuss in person over every wonderful idea and how those ideas work together. Fantastic.
Wow! Mirror next to the window.
"That place needs me." Yes.
Read this while he said it 😊

How great that you kept the tiles. I love them.
Gorgeous
I'm in love with the concrete beamed ceiling - the lighting makes it absolutely stunning
The changes that were done are so lovingly executed. What a wonderful house
Amazing house! I really appreciate your respectful/careful renovations and the fact that you kept the original tile in both bathrooms in tact. I wish more people would preserve historical homes for future generations.
Wow that's literally my dream house inside and out I'm OBSESSED
Frank Lloyd Wright was one of a kind. Thanks, Kirsten. Some of the video was out of focus, but nobody's perfect.
I love this house. Love everything about it. Honestly, I've never heard of "bauhaus" style of house. I'll have to look it up now! Initially, my first impression was art deco bc of the rounded corners on the outside.
You're in for a treat, if Bauhaus is new to you. You might recognize some of the iconic furniture, like the Wasilly chair, or the Wagenfeld and Jucker lamp.
Love how he has retained much of the original aesthetic but the alterations he’s made really add tastefully to the whole feel of the house. Really love the windows and the Art Deco vibe. Definitely see the FLW influence, makes sense that he is an Architectural Designer, everything is so well thought out.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful home and the stories that went with it. There were obviously some struggles with things like low ceilings in places but oh, what a wonderful restoration. So nice to see it being used as a family home.
I like how he quickly closed the toilet lid at 6:55 I wonder what pizza he was trying to hide Lol! Great renovation video, and pushing the windows outwards made a lot of sense
I noticed, too.
Not over done or under done, perfect! Bravo.................
A truly special house with a special design and special vibe !!!! 👍👍👍👍🌸🌸🌸🌸
The house is separated and functional. That aspect is so impressive 😍
I would have never thought that I would like pink tiles.
A vintage home that looks modern. Love your channel Kirsten, u always find beautiful and ineresting houses to show.
This is one of my favorite homes you have shown! Thank you. 👏
Gorgeous, perfect house, and I love that he kept the tile.
What a gorgeous Streamline Art Deco structure! Amazing reno & nice, quiet neighborhood.
Great design, love his voice, it's like resonating like a wave, very relaxing!
Love the renovation. I was going to suggest to get rid of the pink tiles in the kitchen then I realized omg they are everywhere!
Those beautiful live oaks makes your yard is like sculptures!
I LOVE the classic phone nook, too! Not in your house, but I ❤️ laundry shoots In the old houses, too!!!
You did a fantastic job with it.
Feels cozy with all the trees and nature.
The little surprises inside were very tastefully done.
I moved to this part of Austin recently, and this house is my favorite. Was nice to see the inside and the thought put into the remodel.
I loved the mirrors that perpendicular to the windows.Adds so much to the space!
What a great home. Such beautiful design ... and the original tiles! I adore them
My aunt and uncle purchased a home outside of Cherry Hill, NJ year ago that had been abused by a hoarder. It was a disaster! but the bones were still good and when we saw the original bathroom tiles (yes, pink!) and uncovered silk Chinoiserie wallpaper in the dining room, we knew that we found that place for a reason
Cool house! And that tile is soooo not what one would often choose but it is sweet. It feels like a treehouse. Such a peaceful place.
Thank you so much! So beautiful... one can breathe in this house.
Love that wall edges arend squared off but rounded.
