HOW TO BUILD An Alaskan Igloo Snow Shelter

  • This video shows the process I use to build my authentic Alaskan Igloos. This particular snow shelter took me about 10 hours to build at minus 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold temperatures are important to the strength of the blocks, so I typically don't build until the average daily temperatures are below zero.
    The catenary shape of the igloo is naturally very strong. But to make it even stronger, I build a fire inside the igloo during construction to soften the blocks sightly. I then allow it to refreeze when I am finished building. The result is a very strong dome that will easily support several times my weight.
    I heat the interior of the shelter to only about 40 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent it from getting damp. This may seem cold, but when the temperature outside is -20F that represents a 60 degree differential, which is quite comfortable by comparison.
    I always put the fire out at night and cover the entrance, and depend on my cold-weather sleep system to keep me warm. Snow is a good insulator and I am completely protected from any wind. So maintaining a fire throughout the night is not necessary.
    I build my Igloos in early November and use them as temporary winter camps until spring thaw begins, which typically occurs around the end of March in this region. I use them many times throughout the winter, stocking them with a firewood and other necessary supplies.
    My camp stove is made by Kni-Co Manufacturing. It is the Trekker model. It is typically used in an insulated arctic tent, but I have found many practical uses for this lightweight stove. It does a wonderful job of heating the interior of this igloo. It is, in fact, a little too much heat. I find I have to throttle it down quite a ways to prevent overheating the interior.

    Just one small detail: I see a lot of outdoors people drinking coffee with their meals. Problem is, coffee inhibits iron absorption by 40%! Beef has a lot of good iron and consuming coffee with that meal disturbs your body’s ability to absorb it. The solution is simple: wait one hour after the meal before drinking coffee. I love my stove top mocha as well but it’s better to drink it between meals, either before or after. Same with black tea.

    I'm surprised this video doesn't have 50 million views like those other videos do. This dude is a bad ass and it's amazing what he is done.

      Thanks so much David. I enjoyed the build! By the way, I posted a different igloo build to my TicToc account last December, it has a little over 9 million views so far. :)

    Can't get enough of these videos, it's more like an experience than simply watching something online. Thanks for taking the time to make these, you can imagine us viewers wonder what it's like to live like this.

    I’m so happy I found your channel. It’s such a gift. No music or talking, just my CZcams dad showing me how to do stuff 🥰

    It's pure bliss! I barely subscribe to channels or drop comments. After Liziqi, I found you bringing us the rare experience of the tough Alaskan life. As an Indian who has barely travelled, I couldn't help myself from commending the efforts put in. Instantly liked, subscribed n shared with the ones who take their blessed lives for granted. Thank you for showing the hardwork behind making exotic igloo. Looking forward to experiencing it once in life. Stay blessed ❤️🙏

    A HOT Igloo!
    I was thinking no way you make an igloo.
    Then you installed a heating and cooking system!
    Yeah forget the tent....🤣🤣🤣🤣
    The fatwood had a crazy little burn.

    • @ThisIsMyAlaska
      @ThisIsMyAlaska  Před 2 lety +3

      Yes. The igloo can be quite comfortable with the addition of a little heat. It is just one of those things that everyone should try to experience at least once.

      Good evening my friend. Thank you for watching and for taking a moment to comment as well. I am traveling this week and have not had the time to work on my cabin project so I will be releasing a winter camping video from this past January. I think you may enjoy it. It should be up in about 9 hours or so. Enjoy.

      @ThisIsMyAlaska  Před 3 lety

      Hello Tonia! That is a great bucket list item. Sleeping in a well set up igloo is comfortable and enjoyable. It is also very quiet inside. The snow does a good job of muffling the sounds from outside, so you also get a very quiet place to sleep.

      Agree. I have always wondered what it would be like out on the sea alone at night. That is something I wish I could experience. Winter camping, under the northern lights, comes close I believe.
