  • Do cats love us as much as we love them? Or do they view us merely as a provider of resources? Shorty, Kodi and their guardian give their perspective in this study/BBC mockumentary. (Note this is not necessarily a response video directed at the BBC's showing of preliminary research results but this is a general response to any who question the affection cats show to their humans.) I was not a cat person when, almost a year ago, I adopted a kitten that had been abandoned. As a result, I have possibly been more attentive to her behaviour, because I did not know what to expect. When she came to me I thought that she would not survive the week because she was in such a poor state. However, after months of bites and scratches, one of which took me off to A&E, she is now my delightful companion.
    Friends tell me that she follows my every move, ignoring them, and if I move out of her sight, then she moves until she can see me. Recently, I have been unwell, and on a few occasions went to bed during the day. She followed me as usual, but then did things she had not done before. She jumped on the bed, but instead of curling up, as she normally does, at the end of the bed, she gave me a thorough examination, sniffing all over my body, gently touching me with her paws, usually where I was most in pain, and then licking my hands and face. Having determined that I was unwell, she curled up as close as possible to me, even lying in my arms, which she still is nervous about. Like the cat in the video, she had food, water and her litter trays, so she was not trying to manipulate me. She was showing genuine concern. One time I even woke to find that she had crawled under the blanket to get closer to me, yet normally she will run away if I try to cover her. I think all that this shows that her desire to look after me was stronger than her dislike of being covered, and being cuddled.
    I must admit I never expected a cat to be so obviously attached to me.

    I once had a white Turkish Angora (Jean-Pierre) who had never really showed me one bit of affection. Oh, he'd sit in my lap for the occasional ear-rub and come to get his food, when called. Yet, one night, when my ex-husband got violent with me (the first and last time) and I had to call the authorities on him, I was sobbing inconsolably on the sofa afterward, and do you know, that cat shimmied itself up under my chin and stayed there FOR HOURS with me? I will never forget that! My mother and sister were astonished, at the way he remained "glued to" me for the next few days following that incident.

    I don't get how people have ever even considered this lol. My family had a cat named Scoot for 17 years, my dad rescued him from a garbage dumpster getting attacked by red ants when he was just a little kitten, only a few days old. That cat loved my father until the day he died. Every day he would wait outside on the front porch right around the time my dad would come home from work and would immediately jump into his arms and meow like a little baby. It wasn't because he was hungry because we always fed him lunch right before my dad would come home. He was just that attached to my father. He would also go hunt and leave presents on our doorstep all the time lol, but mostly he would leave it by my dad's car right in front of the driver's door. I'll never forget the night he got hit by a car and died... it didn't kill him but he was suffering terribly. We brought him to the vet to be put to sleep to put him out of his misery. My dad hysterically cried and all Scoot kept doing was licking my dad's face and his hands and purred slightly until he slowly went to sleep. We've had plenty of dogs but that cat changed all of our lives and I've never had any animal as fantastic as that cat. My dad still misses Scoot and we still have his collar and my dad still believes that Scoot was comforting him when he kept licking him as he died. Cats are amazing creatures and I'm tired of them being misunderstood

    A few years ago, there was a stray kitty that was born outside my house. Her mom was a real meanie, always hissing and swatting away her own kids. The little kitty was not friendly and would run away as soon as she saw someone come near. Well, one day I was crying outside on the stairs when this lil kitten came. She stared at me crying, and all of a sudden she came up to me and started meowing. She actually let me pet her, and she curled right up to me! I have never seen anyone else touch her, but I think in that moment she knew I was hurting and needed some comfort. Since that moment I was truly convinced animals really can understand us.

    Cats have a memory spanning sixteen hours and can perform on the same mental level as dogs. The difference is the cat can choose not to perform an identical task where a dog does it compulsively to please the owner.
    Cats have a sense of self awareness. They know when their owners are gone and that they have to wait for attention...and they don't like it.
    I lived with our cat, Samantha, for the second half of my teen years and she would use action cues to ask to lay down with me. If I told her "no", she would sit near me on a blanket. If I told her "yes" or "okay", she would climb onto my chest and we would nap together.
    She learned how to do this with me by only reacting to my voice. Samantha understood the tonal differences between "yes" and "no". Cats are quite intelligent.

      Dean Cutler i love cats. I still really dont know why some people hate them. Now, i used to hate cats, but ill explain everything now. So when i was little i would always hate cats. ( i never ever had had a cat, and my mother was allergect to them) but then when i was 5 i got a cat called henry i loooooveeeeddddd him sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much. My neighbours who were allergect to cats caught him and took him to the pound. We had to go get him from the pound. Later my nan and grandad couldnt care for him anymore because of the neighbours allergy and we gave him away to a farm. Originally, when we went to rspca in the first place to get him, we were only there to look. But i saw henry and begged to keep him. Anyways, quite a few years later we got two cats called angel and pearl. They are tortishell cats. We also took in a female ginger stray cat called sandstorm and later gave her a nice home. After we gave sandstorm away, we got two new kittens. Pearl passed away very recently when we found her dead on the side of the road :( rip pearl. Now also, the kittens were angels neices. When they were born, at some point my friends mum who used to own them asked about the kittens at the vet. The vet said because the kittens parents were brother and sister, the vet said ALLL OF THE KITTENS IN THE LITTER WERE GOING TO DIE AFTER TWO WEEKS. But actually, months later im like, "vet..... are you kidding me?" and actually, sasha and mika the kittens are pretty smart. I taught them to shake hands and high five in only two days.

    My kitty and I have a very loving connection. People have told me that they've never seen a bond like ours. When I go out she cries a lot and does one very odd thing that her vet is astounded by. If I'm gone a few hours she will find her toys and then she lines them up in a perfectly straight line. My vet said she does that when she experiences separation anxiety. No matter where in my house I am she's there. When we go to sleep at night she and I lie on the same pillow face to face and she scoots in as close as she can get and then puts her arm around my neck. She wakes me by tapping on my body. She has awakened me from 3 low sugar events when I was asleep. She's older now but when she wanted to be snuggled she would stand on her two back feet and extend her paws in the air squeezing her toes together like a toddler does to ask to be picked up. She is the most loving creature I've ever met. She's my best friend :)

    I own a 14 year old cat who lived his whole life until he was 13 with my grandfather. he was a pure housecat and was held alone (I know your not supposed to do that but my grandfather didn't know better) so when he died last summer the cat was with his dead body for 2 days until they discovered him. because he was supported to go to animal shelter I took him in because I didn't want him to be locked in a cage for the rest of his life. although he already knew me from visits to my grandfather the first few weeks he was only sitting behind my washing machine. he didn't eat, rarely drank and just sat there. the vet said that it was possible that he was actually depressed and sad of the loss of his former owner. and I can 100% agree to that before I never thought that a cat can feel loss of a loved person but now I know better. it took month for him to eat normally again and get used to me. I still have the brush my grandfather used to brush his fur and I rarely touched it but when I want to brush him with that he smells it and then curls up under my bed or behind the TV its like he has PTSD and gets memory from my grandfather.

      What is with Russians and always loving cats? It seems like if I see someone who's Russian online, they're somehow _always_ cat people. You watch videos about cats being really cute, and a good half of them are Russian. Video of people rescuing cats in need? Tons of Russians. A cat video in general? There will be a Russian (and will almost always end with "sorry for my English I'm Russian" even though they have better English than some native speakers).

      Anurag Bhuruk if you want random strangers to care for you, you’d have to be in serious (visible) distress. If you’re not, why should they waste their time to care about you? Everybody’s got their own people they know and love, some have more some have less. Why should we care about every single human being? You know how stressful that would be?
      And also, in a way we do care about people, since we provide food, develop cures for diseases etc. And yes, you could argue that it’s been made for the money, but the fact remains that it also helps other people.

    When my dad was a kid, his family had a cat. Eventually my dad joined the Marines, and he wasn't able to visit home until a couple years later. When he got home, he sat in the living room chatting with his mom. Their cat just relaxed on the floor, bathing and acting as though nothing special was going on, as though my dad was some stranger visiting the family. About 20-30 minutes into the visit, out of nowhere, the cat sits straight up and stares intently at my dad. He sat there staring for a good minute or two as if realizing "wait a minute.... I know this guy!" He suddenly came rushing over and began purring and rubbing on my dad and wouldn't leave his side for quite some time. He saw my dad not as some means to survival, but as a member of his family. It took him a minute to recognize my father after so long, but as soon as he did he was filled with love and affection for him. Animals are wonderful.

It isn't meowing because it is trapped, it is meowing because it can't find it's owner. I've seen cats that can freely go outside do the *exact* same thing. D .j haha, very funny. Telling people to shut up because your limited experience with a cat differs from what they are saying. On the contrary, many cats I encounter are quite happy to interact with strangers if they use the right body language. At times it surprises me how trusting cats can be, and I've got three myself having had one of them for over a decade. While some cats can be standoffish than others (my middle cat's affection does depend on her mood and she does sometimes lash out (though she never tries to seriously harm people with her scratches only being slight) and there's an angry looking cat I keep seeing who refuses to be anywhere near strangers but loves to be near his owner) there are cats that are _really_ affectionate such as my youngest cat who will curl up right by me, preferring to be as close to my face as she can, so that she can cuddle with me. Where I live there are lots of cat owners so I end up coming across many cats who will happily allow me to pet them if I coax them towards me a bit

We figured she was about to be in labor not even 5 minutes afterturning the light on and placing some extra covers underher she gave birth! And how dare i get up from next to her during contractions shed start talking to us like telling us to stay :3.. And one point my niece tried to sit next to her but since shes not a regular in our cats life she grabbed her baby ran around the room to hide but ended up jumping back in bed and tossing her baby on my lap.. I told my niecd to leave instead till she was done.

    I saw a ridiculous scientific experiment on tv that supposedly proved cats weren't attached to their owners like dogs. In the experiment, they took a dog into an unfamiliar room with the owner and let it loose. The dog basically stuck by the owner. They then did the same with a cat and the cat ignored the owner and prowled around the perimeter of the room examining everything and essentially looking for somewhere to hide. If these great scientific experts had bothered to learn a bit about cats, they'd know that they are very territorial and are disturbed by being unfamiliar territory, unlike dogs which tend to range in the wild.

      Most cats don’t like other cats if they weren’t raised with them but if they were then they are fine. I think it stems from the loss of territory and competition for food but they really do better with another cat or several other cats provided they get along. Many cats will dislike another at first if they weren’t raised with the other cat but will eventually warm up to the other cat. Some cats just really don’t like other cats and never warm up to them.

Did you introduce them slowly through closed doors at first so they could hear each other and then through a barrier where they can see and hear each other but not physically interact? Did you try placing them in an area with things that the other cat had used like linens? When my cats didn’t recognize each other after I bathed them, which can often happen with cats, I rubbed them with a cloth that the other cat used, placed them in an area with a cat bed that the other used, etc to let them get accustomed to the other cats scent. I separated them by putting one in a large dog crate while the other roamed and they took turns roaming. That way they could see each other but remain physically separated. It took a few days but they eventually accepted one another.

    • @Uejji
      @Uejji Před 7 lety +51

      Surely it's a cry if it's directed at the caregiver due to emotional distress.
      Cats do meow naturally; they do it as kittens to get the attention of their mothers and then stop as they mature and learn to care for themselves.

    • @SOLIDShift_VI
      @SOLIDShift_VI Před 7 lety +50

      Wrong. A cats meow is only used in it's OWN infancy, not that imitation of a human baby. If that were true every cat has to have seen and heard and human infant to imitate it. Kittens meow it to get the affection and attention from their mothers. Cats learn by watching us that WE are vocal creatures and to get our attention they too must vocalize. And because we DO react and attent to their vocalizations there for re enforcing the behavior and a positive and rewarding action.
      One could attune their meowing at us and them speaking 'baby talk' to us as we oft do to them. As a meow in a kitten's noise. A grown cat with no human contacts would never use this sound beyond infancy to another cat.

    Cats are so god damn cute, I have no idea how people can dislike them - it utterly astounds me that there's a wavelength for cat hatred. All animals are amazing, but cats have a special place in my heart. Every day I finish work and look forward to going home and spending time with mine, and today is certainly no exception!

      Been around kitties since I was 5, and now I have a big floofy boy that loves to cuddle up to me when I come home. I really don't understand the hatred for cats. Some cats are affectionate, some are not, they are all different. It seems that people love to stereotype

      I was raised around dogs all my life, so always thought I disliked cats but I think it's just because I don't understand cat's behavior- and because my dogs have never purposely hurt me when it was tired of me, and dogs are always ready for affection. It's hard, because in my head affection is a certain way that I can see in dogs but not in cats. Or the cats Id been around just aren't friendly, or even completely used to humans. When I moved in with my room mate, her cat was affectionate and loving. But she had some other cats even she recognized as distant and just down right mean. It's the mean ones that spoil things for people.

    • @ericmichel3857
      @ericmichel3857 Před 6 lety +21

      They are not so cute when they are digging their claws into your flesh or furniture. Some cats really are great and very lovable, but some are just reclusive vicious assholes. That can also true of some dogs, (and people) but on average most dogs are far more social and friendly to strangers compared to cats. So if you have never owned a cat, or developed a relationship with one, all you would know is that they can be very aloof and tend to tear up stuff with their claws. Whereas nearly everyone has experienced unrestrained affection from a dog.
      So it is not so hard to understand why dogs are more popular in general.

    I adopted a stray off of the streets a few years ago. She kind of just came out of nowhere meowing. I pet the cat then make my way home unaware that the cat was following me. I woke up the next morning to find the same cat sat on the bin looking in my window meowing when she saw me. I of course fed her and gave her milk thinking nothing of it. I thought maybe if I fed the cat it would leave me alone. But no. She stayed. That didn't stop me feeding her though. She got fed and given milk everyday. I became attatched to the cat. I loved her. I did howver put out posters to see if the cat was missing. Nobody claimed her. I dicided to keep her. But my family doesn't like cats. My nan likes them and my sisters and brothers but not my grandad. He hates them. It had now been a few months since we had the cat and she was more healthy and didn't look skin and bones. She met all of my pets and was friendly to each and every one. Every morning she would be sat on the fence in the backyard meowing at my window to be let in. It was annoying but i couldn't let her in because of my grandad. At first nobody knew about this cat. Not even my nan. But without them knowing I let the cat in a few times, opening the small winow down stairs. The tabby would leap up and jump down on the other side then make her way up stairs care free. By the time I locked the window she was up stairs. I was of course scared for being found out that we had a stray in the house. I go back up stairs, my heart was racing and look into my nans room to see where the cat had gone. She was in her bed! Curled up at the bottem of the bed purring. My nan was luckily asleep at the time and had no clue. I quickly picked up the now woken up cat and rushed to my room then put her on my bed. She soon settled back down and falls asleep beside me. A few hours later I wake her up. It was very early in the morning and nobody must know that the cat was in here. They would kill me! The cat was wide awake and meowing at the door to be let out. I try to shut her up before she woke anyone up and open the door. She runs to the bottem id the stairs I follow closely after. Just as she was about to start meowing I picked her up. I stroked her hoping she would stop meowing. She did stop. But I can't let her out. My grandad was awake. Fuck. How the hell am I supost to get her out now? I run back up stairs with the cat then put her on my bed. I then put a dressing gown on and picked the cat up, hideing her in it. I go downstairs and open the door. He asks what I was doing and I replied "I'm hungry." Then make my way to the kitchen. He couldent see that I was holding a cat underneath the dressing gown because it was so dark. I go into the kitchen and close the door to the living room shut as I held the cat I one arm then put cat on the floor. She wonders around looking at everything. I open the small window which she went through before and put the cat out. I felt bad for locking her out but I didn't know what else to do. I close the window and lock it then get some chrisp and go back upstairs. I heard the cat meowing none stop for hours. I tried ignoreing it. Each time I looked out of my bedroom window the cat would stare at me with big green eyes with her two front paws on the wall looking up at me wanting to be let in again. She was stood on her hind feet, her front paws on the wall to explain clearer. My grandad threw things at the cat since she wouldn't shut up meowing hours on end. He thought it was an annoying random stray cat. I did his a few times until my nan found out. She wasn't mad at all she actually helped me look after the cat as well as my brothers and sisters. Now Everyone knew except my grandad who hates cats. We let the cat stay in our house all night then early in the morning we would feed her and let her out before my grandad found out. It had been a few months since we had the cat now and more of my family came to visit. Every one was sat at the table talking about anything and everything. A bit of the door was open and the cat walked in and jumped up on the chair all while everyone was arguring about food. (I know it's pathetic for a whole family to be arguring over how many sugars and colories are in each food) They didn't even relize the cat was on the chair until she meowed and everyone stopped arguring and looked at the cat which was sat on the chair stareing at everyone. My older brother said "I didn't know you had a cat!" My nan explained the situation to everybody and they were then saying how cute the cat is. I bought her a red collar with a bell on it. By grandad came in early that night and and was sat on the sofa watching t.v. He didn't know the cat was in the house. The cat made her way up stairs. Her tail was held high and the bell on her collar was noticeably loud. She casually walked past my grandad who had no clue that the cat had gone upstairs. The cat stayed again that night and let her out again in the morning. She would follow me everywhere no matter how far she would always be by my side. I once went to the shop and the cat followed me and sat at the doors entrance wating for me then followed me back home. She followed me to my sisters house which is quite far. She was at my older sisters house at a party with me. Just chilling on the sofa purring away without a care in the world. Then she followed me back after the party ended late at night and slept in my house. I once was waiting for the bus to go to town and to no suprise, my tabby cat was by my side, sitting down next to me waiting for the bus. I didn't take her with me even though she followed me on the bus. People smiled ad the cat made her way down towards me. I had to pick her up and bring her out of the bus. I felt horrible but I couldn't take her with me. the noise would scare her. When I was back from town I saw the cat sat at my front door and when she saw me she greeted me with a tail held high meowing and purring. I pet her and she follows me into the house. Fast foward a few months and the cat followed me everywhere now. She would wait for me at the bus stop everyday when I came home from school. I don't know if she stayed at the bus stop all day but when I came back from school I would find her laying on the bus seat which you wait for the bus. Then she would greet me again happily purring rubbing against my legs. After I pet her I walk home with the cat following me. Lets Fast foward now shall we? My grandad had now found out about this cat and was furious. He threatend to get rid of her and he did. I came home one day and saw that my cat wasn't waiting for me at the bus stop. I asked where she was when I went home she the repliey was that was was somewhere far away on a farm. I was heart broken. A few days later i hear meowing in the night. I quickly look out of my bedroom window only to see my cat! I immediately let her in the house and fed her then let her sleep in my house. My grandad found out again and sent her away to somewhere even futher than before. The tabby came back again but this time in the pouring rain. I dryed the cat off and gave her food. She stayed for a couple of days then my grandad found out and sent her away again for the third time. I knew by now that the amazing cat we adopted wouldn't stay away that easily. She returned a few days later meowing at the window to be let in. She looked a bit thin but nothing to worry about. I fed her and let her stay. Every one was amazed about how the cat made her way back home from such far place. She travelled in a car to where her new homes were. It must be scent or something. She got sent away for the forth time. I waited for her return. I hoped I heard her all familiar meow. But weeks turned into moths then into years. She hasn't come back. I miss her dearly and pray she is somewhere safe and loved. It took some time but I've now accepted that she is gone. I still wonder where she is. She was the first and best cat I've ever had pleasure in looking after. I wonder if she will come back but I doubt it. She was as loving and loyal as a dog.

    My beautiful Periwinkle just died this morning after a month of being skinny, a week of going severely downhill, and a couple days after being taken to the vet where we learned that she was not dying from worms like we thought, but from a tumor in her belly. We did all we could to comfort her in her last days, and I feel empty now. The only comfort I have is knowing that she is no longer suffering. This is the first video I watched today, and although I've been crying for the past three days straight, it made me smile and feel comforted. Thank you for reminding me that cats truly do care about their owners. I needed to know that Peri knew that we loved her. I told her how proud I am for all the fight she's given, and how strong she is, but that she could go whenever she wanted to because I couldn't stand to watch her suffer any longer. My baby died on October 5th, 2022. She lived a good four years and was the prettiest, silliest kitty I could have asked for. She loves being held like a baby, and my sister and I did that for her in the last couple days. When my mom went outside to check on her this morning, she was gone. The last thing I did before we went out and buried her in the backyard was give her one final kiss on the head and told her I loved her. It all happened so fast. She was just walking last week, and in the last couple days she couldn't. She tried to walk and fell over. She wasn't drinking or eating, and her meows were painful. I cried and held her in my arms and told her how much we all love her.
    Unfortunately, I don't think I will be feeling better for a long time. I've fallen into a depression because kitty was suffering so bad. But I will try to keep her good memories alive, so that I can stay alive. She doesn't deserve to be remembered for her final days. She should be remembered for all the days she was thriving and living the good life. I will love her forever and ever. Rest in peace Periwinkle, you beautiful cat.

    I will never understand why some people say that cats are heartless or don’t love their owner. I’ve got two cats, a black one and an orange one. The black one would always be by my side and sleeping, and in the night they would wait for me to say „komm heia machen“ (lets go and sleep) and then walk beside me to my bed and cuddle up to me. The orange one would always come to me and comfort me when he sees that I was crying/ feeling bad. He would start cuddling up to me and make me stroke him because he knew that this would distract me. Honestly these two cats where more there for me when I needed them than all my friends and family members combined.
