Barkley wasn't a shock. We got to see some olympic prelims in Bloomington. Barkley had a reputation as a crybaby at auburn and must have been 300 lbs when he got to the tryouts. I've never liked Knight, but he was at the peak of his powers at the time, and there was no way he was going to bother with anyone who wasn't 100% committed. The Stockton snub is harder to reconcile if it's strictly about merit, but personal loyalties often win out. Regardless the squad he put together beat everybody by at least 20 points, so can't really argue with the results. 😊

1984 was the last time the American college players were so talented when compared to others such that Coach Knight could have selected the team blindfolded and the Olympic result would most likely be the same. Who were on that invited group again? Jordan, Perkins, Ewing, Barkley, AC Green, Mullin, Dumars, the list goes on and on. When you have a group filled with future NBA greats, someone will have to be cut. The interesting thing is Knight ended up taking Leon Wood, Jeff Turner and Steve Alford over Barkley, Stockton and Malone. I guess the world works in a strange way.

Coach Knight's job was to win the Gold. He picked the RIGHT players to make up his TEAM. At 20 years old Barkley was a fat, undisciplined, extremely talented slob. When you've been entitled your entire life leading up to that moment, you feel like you can do whatever you want because most coaches will sacrifice anything just to acquire talent and win. Not the best coach ever. He gave Barkley instructions to lose weight and work hard. Barkley declined. In fact, he did the opposite. Would you believe Coach Knight's version or Barkley's? Not even close. And what was the outcome of Barkley being cut? That team blew every opponent out of the building. So much for the injustice. Barkley's attitude not talent, was always his problem. In this case, his attitude left him off Olympic history. Imagine being able to tell your children and granchildren that you represented your country as a collegian in the Olympic games. The mound round of rebound blew it.
As far as Coach Knight's assessment of Michael Jordan, no one was a better evalauator of talent. Even at that age, he called Michael the GOAT. He got it right.

Knight was a great colllege coach but he wasn’t really a pro-oriented coach. He didn’t have a ton of player flourish in the NBA other then Isaiah Thomas. As the US coach, he seemed to select players who were more suited for the college game, like Joe Klein. I thought him leaving Barkley, Stockton and Malone of the 1984 Team was crazy. However, that 1984 team did play well together and it was a magical team that really showcased Jordan’s talents. He also let Jordan run free and Jordan surprisingly thrived under Knight. Jordan seemed like the antithesis of an Indian player, but Knight really thought the world of Jordan and Jordan had a glorious Olympics. Sucks they left out those Hall of Famers, but that 1984 Team really gelled together and their were a fun team to watch, with Jordan really showcasing his extraordinary talents and skills. Was a great lead in to Jordan shortly taking the NBA by storm. It was really too bad about Barkley and the other HOFer’s.
