  • Odin, ruler of Valhalla and main God of Norse Mythology, just got 150 years older!
After analyzing a gold bracteate found in Jelling, Denmark in 2021 - specialists confirm
that the runic inscription reads “He is Odin’s man”, and is likely referring to an
unknown king or chieftain, possibly named Jaga or Jagaz.
Previous finds show evidence of Norse Mythology from the mid 500s, but this artefact from early 400s, puts Odin on the timeline 150 years earlier than previously established.
The small gold disc belongs to the Vindelev hoard which was discovered by a metal detector enthusiast. Part of the treasure trove is on display at the National Museum of Denmark and analysis of the bracteates is still ongoing.

Tacitus mentions "Wotan" in his "Germania" much earlier than this find.
The find though important, is just one link in a very long and old chain.

Tacitus projected the roman gods onto the Germans in his descriptions. He didn't say anything about Wotan, he talked about Mercury.

I'm not suprised. The Furious and Wise Wizard has been known among Germanic speaking peoples since the days of old Rome before Christ.
