Yep, Robertson was absolutely right. It made a better more appropriate character.
Cliff Robertson was an avid historian and did his own research into the times of the characters he portrayed. His knowledge of philosophy and literature was also impressive.
Oh yes. Robertson was absolutely correct. He made it one of the top ten Twilight Zone episodes.

@@MrShobarThe Twilight Zone episode is in the 1840s and Wagon Train is post Civil War around 1860-70s. Men from the east most likely wore bowlers or Homburg style, similar to the hat Indiana Jones wears. The Stetson or cowboy hat was designed around 1865 and is similar to the Homburg, but the Stetson is more rugged and waterproof.

One of my favorite episodes! Cliff Robertson absolutely nails this role... The wagons were coming from the EAST. No cowboy hats! A fine actor in a marvelous role. Thanks, Rick!
Only thing, I can see some flim-flam man selling cowboy attire to pioneers before they leave. They'd say it was necessary due to the desert sun, etc.
The hat did set Robertson apart from the other pioneers, even though some, such as the women, were wearing Eastern garb. The stovepipe hat was more for formal occasions.
@@KutWrite stovepipe hats were not necessarily for formal occasions. Please look at Matthew Brady's civil war photos where Abraham Lincoln was wearing a stovepipe hat to meet with his generals on the battlefield.

I think the hat was the right decision. It really helped to define the character.
This episode of The Twilight Zone was exceptionally well thought out. The remote desert setting meant that when the main character found himself transported to 1961 from 1847 he wasn't instantly overwhelmed by 1960's technology, such as would be the case in an urban setting. Instead the modern paved and air conditioned world of 1961 reveled itself slowly in the vastness of the remote desert. This way the main character was able to better adapt while still showing understandable disbelief and confusion. It's a shame we don't see anything on TV with this level of intellect, thoughtfulness and humanity anymore!

The wife was played by Evans Evans. Evans recently passed on June 16, 2024, at the age of 91. RIP

@@bobcole612 Oh, a wonderful catch Bob - that (for me) was the best acted five, or so, minutes from that great film. "Eugene Grizzard" was the very first on-screen character that Gene Wilder played.
@@rivaridge7211 and based on a real event. The undertaker that B&C abducted was the same one their bodies were brought to after the ambush.
It is amazing what level of talent the people who made the Twilight Zone had. Wonderful writing and great acting.

I saw this when it first aired and I took Cliff on his own terms - because he was serious and earnest, I accepted his appearance without question. Even as a kid, I associated the look with Abraham Lincoln, probably the only other stovepipe hat I had ever seen! The man in the 60’s got to wear a cowboy hat. Both wives, by the way, Cliff’s in the covered wagon, and the wife in the cafe played by Evans Evans who tended to Cliff’s wound, were excellent. An enthralling and touching episode. Cliff was superb. Thanks for this great video!
This was one of my favorite episodes when I was a kid and still is today.
During the 80s and 90s, I had to drive past that "cafe" every week.

Thank you for reviewing this episode. I am 76 years old and remember watching this when it first aired. I was a big Twilight Zone fan and was really captivated by it. Just a few months ago I happened to see it again on UT, and really enjoyed seeing it again. I understood more this time than when I was a kid.
He absolutely made the correct decision! I love this episode-when he sees the 1961 calendar page is such a stunning moment. I often think of my dad who passed away in 1978, how amazed he would be if he saw all the progress and changes in our world today. He would react just like Chris. Great video, Rick.

One of my very favorites as well. Robertson nailed it, not just in wardrobe, but also as the portrayal of the character, confused, nervous and yet focused.
This was one of my favorites too. I think the stove pipe has was the perfect prop for this circumstance. I also felt that his sick boy gave a desperate feel to the episode. I was glad he got the penicillin pills and his boy survived, and became a noted physician. Excellent twist. I love the twilight zone.
Of all the episodes this is the one I have the best memory of, I was 12, and it was about 50 years later when I viewed it again.

The Twilight Zone is one of my all time favorite TV series.
The stovepipe hat is 'period-correct." For reference see Clint Eastwood's "Pale Rider" where Clint's character, the "Preacher man" wears a stovepipe hat. There are probably more but I can't recall them right now. Twilight Zone is my all-time favorite TV series. Sometimes the plot twist was obvious, sometimes it wasn't, but the shows were always well made and kept you engaged and thinking.

I watched this episode again the other day. Going through my DVD set (again lol). I think the stovepipe hat was sort of a minor shock at first glance...but it worked! Very good!

I'm glad that John Astin who played a supporting role in this episode is still around at age 94. He is one of my favorite people from TV. I used to watch him on "The Addams Family" as Gomez and saw him in the made for tv movie, "Evil Roy Slade" which made me really laugh out loud when I was a kid.
He was the janitor in Gremlins 2. When he appears, Guzmo says "Gomez".

From the pen of Rod Serling, this is one of the more enthralling episodes. A brilliantly conceived story that perfectly integrates a 120 year timeline into a family's desperate struggle to survive against impossible odds. It's seamless cloth from start to finish.

The Howling Man is my favorite episode but I adore ALL of them! Probrobly my favorite show of all time.
Cliff Robertson is so underrated and kind of forgotten today. I recommend Charley/Flowers for Algernon where he has to go from "mentally handicapped" to Genius. I just found out he did this part twice: once on TV as a play then the movie. I also recommend the Playhouse 90 production of Days of Wine and Roses with Piper Laurie.
Robertson won a Best Actor Academy Award for "Charly". With the "r" reversed. Not "Charley"!

The wife was Evans Evans, who played the part of Gene Wilder's girlfriend in the movie, "Bonnie and Clyde". She was a beauty!
Prior to 1870 the cowboy hat was unknown. The cowboy hat was not common in 1840, it might have been a rural farm type hat, but it would not have looked like a "cowboy hat". A bowler or stovepipe was historically accurate
Except that they didn't have bowlers in 1847.

Rick, this was one of my favorite episodes as well. I think I remember watching this episode when I was younger and never saw the time travel issue possibility until it happened. I was really blown away with the plot. I think the stove topped hat fits the story and the time period better than a cowboy hat would have. The hat makes me think about President Lincoln. It was really one of the best episodes of the Twilight Zone that had a wonderful ending. Thanks Rick, James
Many actors who appeared in the Twilight Zone went on to successful careers. Some that come to mind were Charles Bronson, William Shatner, Robert Redford to name just a few.

I love watching twilight zone just to see the actors who went on to become well known people, especially and including the kids.
William Shatner was in two episodes of TZ! There are SO many actors in TZ that we saw in later TV shows (too many to mention)!

This is my favorite episode of all time! I'll be honest and say that each time I watch this episode I can't hold back the tears. It makes you really wish that such miracles could truly happen!

One of my favorite episodes as well (along with "Night Call" and "Uncle Simon"). I think the hat is perfect. Never batted an eye at the hat. It works seamlessly with the story setting.

I have always dreamed of being able to pay to see a second copy of a show with something done differently.
One of the under loved episodes. All of them with Mr. Roberstson were great. Not just TZ but "Outer Limits" and of course the movie "Charlie". He was a great actor, taking his craft seriously. I LOVED the hat. Never thought about it being anything but as they were coming from the east. This is a great episode!
The producers could barely afford Cliff Robertson for “The Galaxy Being” but they were determined, knowing that an A-list actor of his caliber would lend the “gravitas” to the pilot they desperately required to sell the series.
One of my all-time favorites! The other being another time travel with Gig Young going back to his hometown and realizing it's the year of his long ago childhood. I saw both these stories starring two Oscar winning actors when I was around twelve and they blew my mind. He knew what he was doing! Now if "western" shows like Bonanza and Gunsmoke took a cue for more authenticity and passed on the bright colors, blue eyeshadow and teased hair for female characters they might have had something! Haha!
I always laughed LOL during these "vintage" westerns where the lady folk were adorned with modern day wigs and makeup.
Not a big TZ fan when I was 4, Stooges & cartoons but when I first saw it 40yrs ago, TZ marathons were the best, I thought it was flawless, great episode.
I think the stove pipe makes sense. Especially now after hearing this. Plus, it makes more visual impact! Thanks for posting these videos bro! I loved the twilight zone marathons as a kid!
I think the hat used in the episode was totally appropriate. It emphasised that the character was out of his comfort zone as an easterner travelling west. A traditional cowboy hat would have made him fit in with the territory he was passing through.
It is also interesting that you can find the diner used in the episode on Google Maps - it is now closed down and abandoned: 36°15'30"N 117°59'39"W

@@im1who84u it’s on a road going to mammoth for skiing and Reno, so it’s actually in a good spot for it’s time. Unfortunately there are too many food places on the up now. Of course for the show it’s supposed to be somewhere in New Mexico or Arizona.

This was also one of my favorite episodes, if not THE favorite. As a kid I remember fantasizing about time-travel, or even wanting to pretend to have appeared "today" from sometime in the past -- all because of this episode.
In re-watching it more than 60 years later, I find myself being drawn even more deeply into the character... How did he feel upon learning that his son (who would die in 1914) only had another 67 years of life remaining? And did he understand that the M1868 breechloading rifle he carried would not be made for another twenty-one years?
Twilight Zone always found ways to entertain, provoke thought, and indulge the imagination like no other series before or since. Rod Serling was a true genius.
One of my favorites. I never thought anything wrong with the hat.
This is one of my top two favorite Twilight Zones! I just love the trippiness of it. I didn't even blink an eye at the hat, but the thought of a simple everyday pill being used as a magic cure-all is far stranger. It works to move the story along and cure the kid, but it's like the equivalent of giving a cough drop to cure pneumonia.
@@BobSmith-tv1bq true, but it's taking a lot of faith that it's something that can be cured with penicillin, eg. bacterial vs. viral pneumonia, tuberculosis vs. bronchitis.
This is my favorite Twilight Zone episode and one reason why is because they did make it look authentic.

In The Searchers (1956), Ward Bond's character who is a Captain of Texas Rangers wears a similar hat. We have a lot of incorrect ideas about the West of the 19th Century - including clothing, fueled by movies and TV. If you think about it, someone taking up residence in the West would wear the clothes they had brought with them. Styles would follow people west, too. Most folks didn't dress like "cowboys"...

Rick this is one of my favorite episodes and I'm glad you are featuring it. Cliff Robertson was so right in picking the clothes he wore in this episode. I have heard that even Rod Serling agreed with him. Plus the restaurant owner was wearing a some what looking cowboy hat! Cliff Robertson was one of my all time favorite actors and I always wished I could have met him. He is superb in this episode!

I would agree with Robertson. Not everyone in the old west wore cowboy hats and cowboy boots. If you watch a lot of western TV shows from the 50s and 60s, you'll see that pretty much every man (with very exceptions) wore a cowboy hat of some kind, bandanna around the neck, long-sleeved shirt and vest and a sidearm. It was like a uniform. But, that's Hollywood.
Townspeople wore plug hats, a kind of short top hat. Lawyers, doctors, shopkeepers didn't wear cowboy hats too often.
@@lawrencelewis2592 Also, when you get to the 1870's and 80's the choice of hat in the west was the Bowler, not the cowboy hat. Billy the Kid wore a top hat in one of his pictures. Butch Cassidy, Sundance and the Earp brother all wore Bowlers.

Its always better to push down old-world stereotypes, even if audiences don't initially realize what they're looking at. Accuracy is paramount for preserving history and the public view of it. We can't have our own history being so badly misshapen due to pop culture going off and catering to what the current popular trends or stereotype is. Portraying someone from back east as he would've really looked was a great idea, and its good if the audience questions it, that prompts some people to go research attire worn back in those days after being mildly confused about what they saw on film, and thus enlightens them

Just saw this episode,(again), last Sunday night! One of the best!
It is a perfect fit! I liked his gruff voice. He's a family man risking his life, the life of his wife, and son. He had reached the breaking point. Do they push on or turn back? Once he knew where the water was up ahead, he strengthened his steel spine.
Know that location very well. Passed by dozens of times. In fact, headed right through there next week on a fising trip.
My favorite episode also. It was very well done. Finding the rifel at the end was a really smart part of the story line.

I was a kid back in the 60's and was obsessed with the Twilight Zone and watched all the episodes multiple times. I haven't seen this episode in years. It was one of my favorites as well even though it didn't have any aliens in it. I was also a Sci-Fi buff. The original Otaku nerd. 🙂
Cliff Robertson was spot-on correct. The hat is appropriate for the time (1840s) the main character lived, and that the character was an Easterner traveling West.
The character would have worn the attire available to him and that he'd acquired while living in the East.
It's not as if he had access to menswear shops during his travels West!
When I first saw this episode I was pleased to see Cliff Robertson. He was a superb actor who always brought his characters to life. Also, the other actors were top notch. The acting was what made The Twilight Zone such a great show. Many of the best actors of the mid-20th century can be found on this show.
The casting department probably didn't get enough credit for the work they did.
Superb episode, a firm favorite. Cliff Robertson was a highly astute and educated individual. His performance here as a Chris Horn is one of my all time favorites. The episode is incredibly well enhanced by Fred Steiner’s marvelous original score, which is very reminiscent of Bernard Herrmann’s music.

Being the cliff Roberts, what's portraying A Pioneer in that circa.He was originally from the East heading West.And he is exactly in the proper attire for people from the east in that time period who became The american pioneers heading west.🇺🇸
The time travel episodes were always my favorites.
A great episode. Robertson related a story regarding the costume. He showed up with a black suit made of heavy wool because he had investigated the clothes worn by an Easterner of that time. The entire outfit, hat and all, was a point of contention between the producer and Cliff. Finally, they phoned Rod Serling. After hearing the facts, Rod agreed with Robertson and the hat and suit stayed! Love the back story. ( Interview is at Archive of American Television. )
About twelve years after Edward Platt and John Astin appeared in this, they were in the same episode of The Odd Couple.

I flashed forward seeing John Crawford serving in the diner. He serves Columbo in a diner also , a few years later.
i love this episode and it's so creepy when robertson tops the hill and sees a highway with power lines , brilliant episode, his period costume was spot on, his hat, coat, and old rifle were perfect

Great vid presentation! That hat decision affects the costumes his family wore. It totally fits. As to the character actors, in Twilight zone and other series, such as Alfred HItchcock presents, it is amazing who you can see. Please dont hesitate to highlite these others. May I go on with an example?? We all remember Dick York, or was it Dick Sargent, as Darin on Bewitched. But before that he was a Broadway actor. He was signed by a studio and appeared with Gene Kelley and Spencer Tracy! He is on serveral episodes of AHP - a remarkable talent.

My favorite episode is "Some Kind of Stopwatch" I think it's called. Imagine, having a stopwatch that can freeze time when you click it? Boy could I have fun with that!
Gotta love the calendar in the diner! TZ episode shout out to the great state of Arizona! Plus very classy that the diner served open beer instead of one having to open it by one’s self. 😂 I know the diner was not the main focus of the episode, but I would have forgone the story and just geeked out looking at all the nuances of that diner! Now there’s a story!
As for the hat choice? Strong choice on Cliff’s part, but if the argument was going to be so strong on appropriate head gear, they should have had him go hatless like the John Astin looking dude in the vest. The story itself is what made the episode not the hat. I noticed there was no discussion about the wife’s hat. It was probably just thrown at the actress playing her with a voice saying “Here, wear this”.

Yes I agree that Cliff Robinson was right in having an authentic hat of the 1847 time and not a cowboy hat from about twenty years later.
The calendar you showed in the still shot showed “The Pioneer Savings and Loan” where my parents had their mortgage in 1961 in Tucson, Arizona. It along with most other Savings and Loan companies were destroyed in the Charles Keating scandal…a shame.

One of my all time favorite episodes.
This is one of my favorite Zone episodes as well as one of my favorite Rod Serling short stories. From what I can remember (haven't read the short story in years) the TV episode sticks fairly closely to the written story and the stovepipe hat was absolutely the best way to go.
I question what looks like a polo shirt he is wearing under his jacket. Did they exist in this period?
I just researched the shirts -- invented in the 1920s. So, the Chris character was ahead of his time.

When I seen Cliff's back, and that hat, I knew instantly what episode. He was brilliant in that role.
I never even thought about the hat but that episode is certainly one of the very best from any sixties series.
