Greg Scott Channel - RICHARD WHITELEY - GOTCHA! UNCUT... Noel's House Party, BBC Television, 1998.

- Only 7 minutes of this was ever aired. How they got it down to such a short time when there was so much material to choose from, I will never know.
This, in real-time, is the Gotcha where Mr Whiteley is done up like a kipper.
EVERYBODY was in on it, apart from Richard and the studio audience. That said, everyone IN the audience twigged that it was a wind-up long before Whiters! As the warm-up guy, I had one heck of a job keeping them schtum! I also had to keep quiet myself during tape stops... Normally I'd go in and chat to the audience whenever there was a pause - However, as everything was being recorded, I couldn't do my usual thing - But you CAN hear me piping up from time to time after the reveal at the end.
So enjoy this, my friends - It's already on You Tube in chunks - But here is 56 minutes of telly bliss, uninterrupted, with a wee bit more tagged on the end.
And Richard - God bless you.

One of the best practical jokes ever done on TV. Dear old Whiteley didn’t suspect a thing! In the modern vacuous world of the reality star, Whiteley would be a comfort, a joy, with the ability to laugh at himself. Still much missed. If Richard is watching this in heaven, he would be chuckling away. Brilliant piece of TV, never forgotten
"Look me in the eye. You know you're talking bollocks."
Absolutely brilliant
This uncut version is so much funnier than the one we saw in the original broadcast.
The two actors playing the contestants did a fantastic job during this.
Yes, they stayed very realistic. It would have been easy for the bloke to be really obnoxious but instead he just plays it as irritating, which is better.
You are not in the illuminati.
Richard as the cheeky chappy was great acting
An absolute brilliant Gotcha .So funny and Richard Whitely takes it so well . Wish we could have a programme like Noel's House Party back on TV again.
My god, I am literally crying with laughter...this is bloody awesome! It also makes me wish I was back living in the age where Saturday night TV was void of idiots screaming on x-factor, pathetic reality shows begging for money with telephone votes and Simon Cowell. I don't care what anybody says, I loved Noels House Party.
And to greggles2412, I would send you the bill to fix my monitor after I laughed while having a mouth full of coffee...but this made me laugh so much I don't care!
RIP Richard Whiteley - True Legend
Its a pity, within your nice review of this brilliant gotcha, that you felt the need to slag off hundreds of thousands of everyday people just trying to make away in their life, in the profession they want to be in.
I bet you voted ‘remain‘.
An absolute joy to watch it again. The much missed Richard whitely being such a good sport.
What a sport Richard Whiteley was! Good to know he could take a joke as well as give it. 🙂
So pleased he gotcha before he died xxx
This is absolutely brilliant, world-class TV. I love Richard Whiteley, he is missed very much by me, and of course everybody else was great too, especially the two actors, Miss Richards and Richard.
This is definitely going to my favourites box, somehow I’ll try to get it to the top 🤗.
RIP Dear Richard.
I love how Richard Whiteley stays unflappable during this!
..Well almost 😁.
29:15 Makes me think otherwise.
@@paianis 34:45 the most unconvincing fart noise ever, I wonder if he realised there was something going on after that?
Filmed on 2nd October 1998, the same day when Episode 2362 broadcasted on Channel 4. It was produced between Episode 2399 (24.11.98) & Episode 2400 (25.11.98). The segment was broadcasted on BBC One (7.11.98).
Awesome, thanks for posting. It's wonderful to watch a bit of TV gold. It's living history...
I reckon Richard twigged at 29.15, "I think this show is a windup for me, you know.", but being a true gentleman, he went along with it just in case the contestants were real as he might have been wrong.
Just my opinion. And still a true classic!
Quit a rare piece of footage. What a laugh. What a sport. Sadly missed . Thanks for the upload
26:06 I wonder was Stilgoe's "it's a collection of bowels and incontinence" gag planned or spontaneous?
RIP Mr Whiteley.
Utterly hilarious. The actor contestants are really good. Their stage names are purposely identical too but still Richard doesn’t twig! Brilliant!
This never, ever fails to cheer me up!
Fair play to them; obviously a lot of work went into coordinating everything.
Brilliant RIP Richard Whiteley
Where on EARTH did you dig this up from! Brilliant!
Thank you!!
40:28: "No, I can't tell you the Conundrum'.
_Makes me laugh every time!_ GJ
"a collection of bowels' incontinence" - brilliant
Hilarious!!!!!!!!!! I love how Richard Max ruins the letters game by thinking its the conumdrum!
I wonder at what stage he finally caught on. Possibly at 18:25. Having a mobile phone ringing and needing the toilet are just about plausible, but the clock thing was when it was getting too absurd for it all to be coincidental.
Awesome! I remember when this first went out and have seen the version that aired on the House Party a number of times since, but never these unedited rushes. Some of the gags on the edited version make a lot more sense when you see some of the material they cut from the full version seen here.
"Michael, I hope you're recording that, 'cos it can go very well for that London Weekend thing they're on about on Tuesday, won't it?"
Richard addressing the producer (and Series 1 runner-up), the late Michael Wylie.
The great Richard Whiteley . I honestly think if Noel Edmund's and Mr Blobby were the contestants he still wouldn't have twigged !
It’s adorable how Richard Whiteley didn’t cotton on at all, despite rhetorically wondering whether it was a wind up! He didn’t cotton on right up until Noel snuck up behind him!
Always funny no matter how many times I watch it I noticed at the end when it was panning the audience there was one guy in a grey shirt and tie who did not look happy at all.. His face was hilarious in how pissed he looked.
Thank you Greg, it was actually a good episode if aired in full. Surprised Richard didn't twig when Champion couldn't be there. By last numbers game I think he knew but he carried on.
He twigged about half way through but was just being a good sport. Not saying he knew it was a gotcha from another TV show, but he knew the crew were playing a prank and didn't wanna ruin a joke for 50 people or whatever.
Thanks so much for this upload. Never laughed so much in ages! Richard was pure Gold! :)
"I think this is a wind up for me"....
Classic
Richard was such a good sport, it's his bemused wonder that makes it so funny!
loved this. Also nice insight to how a pre recorded show works
Where the goodness was this found? it just shows what a gentlemen Richard Whiteley was to tolerate what was happening. RIP Richard Whiteley.
i think richard knows at 29.16 when he says i think this is a wind up for me after that i think he just plays along classic countdown god bless whiteley countdown has never been the same since his death
just seen the cut version, this will be even funnier. stop it i'm crying over here. such a timeless show. a true youtube gem!
just imagine the people in the control room. what's the price he receives?
I'm crying and only half way, thank you for up loading
Afternoons just aren't the same RIP Richard
The male contestant should be a real actor, he’s so good.
Hilarious, and classic. Wonderful addition to all the serious episodes of Countdown on CZcams.
Many thanks Greggles for the upload . Another bit of TV history and TV geek in one hit!
Utterly wonderful. So glad you posted this.
Thank you for posting this
I miss countdown. as it was. Richard was a legend.
No question, the best Gotcha of them all.
Hi there, absulute classic, Thank you for this. I miss those days where tv was great...
'It's not the conundrum!'
whait 6 letters conundrum ?
Epic. One of the best, thanks for sharing.
wow.... one of those rare bits of gold you find on you-tube..... superb .....
Absolutely classic! Thanks so much.
Richard Whitely .. what a true professional. Great man.
this was great thanks for uploading :)
Thanks for sharing this. RW was such a great chap.
Just utterly wonderful. Superb.
Thanks for posting this :)
"Awesome" is my summation, too. What an utter professional, Twice-nightly, to keep it going.
@31:00 was this where the phrase “Twice Nightly Whitely” originated from, or was that saying used before this episode? I remember Richard’s retort was always “Once yearly, nearly!”
Well done for keeping all these years. This was always the favourite of all of Noel’s Gotchas.
Nice one Greggles and what a nice guy the mayor of Wetwang was :)
Cheers for this Gregory
Brilliant
Genius. Fantastic acting
This is what true pranks are. Noel’s a genius.
Wow, how did you come across this. Amazing to see the unedited show
Superb.
My favourite ever gotcha 😂😂😂
Brilliant!
Marvellous
OMG the last time I saw this was in the actual edit for the show
That’s awesome :) :) well done
This is Amanda. She has a lovely pair of............Alsatian dogs. Wondered what on earth old Twice Nightly was going to say for a moment. Bless him. Still miss him.
Richard looked seriously suspicious after the "Something" round.
I love how Carol and Richard breakdown laughing
He actually twigs at 29:20 but keeps going.
34:43 - The best fart on television was here in this Gotcha. Interesting to see them retake the fart shot at the end of the Gotcha.
1:06 Ooohh, Nasty Richard!
Just hilarious!
I'm guessing the first few rounds were done as normal so as not to arouse suspicion too quickly
Fantastic >. This is REAL Television.
Would have thought omethings would have been a give away seeing they supposedly didn't see it.
The penny does start dropping at that moment. "This whole show is a wind-up isn't it?" But being English he still thinks it must be him who's wrong somehow.
Wasn’t that the time he said “am I being spooked”, or something like that?
There was a split second when Richard thought he had been had.
I think you've somewhat missed the point...
Richard sussed it out from that 29:15
Yes, especially considering they all had diarrhea!
Best Gotcha EVER! :)
Suzie is the last standing, I love you Nick, but this bit of nostalgia was great 🤭🤫
Regrettably, only a small amount of this could make it on to Noel's House Party. This full show is much more pleasant to see than the weird atmosphere of the edit. Weird how in the round where she goes to the toilet, no-one offered the valid words FARTIER or FARTER. Maybe it was even set up so that Richard could have a comeback if he so saw it. Ever the gentleman, he resisted mentioning the toilet trip when diarrhoea came up. Unfortunately, the OMETHINGS round was a misjudged part because it's so blatant. Richard himself then said that the whole thing seems a wind up. Shame to see them pretending that the end part is what Richard wasn't already in on at that time. It was funny enough already. That's Saturday night TV for you - broad brush strokes in what was actually a more detailedly comedic 'episode'.
Bring back the house party
YTV brilliance for balls ups. Professional.
29:14 Richard knew something (no pun intended) was up
The woman contestant is also on the Jon Pertwee Gotcha. Asking him about Worzel Gummidge. ... I SWEAR
As I now know the end was doctored it disappoints a touch, but still great fun.
Does someone say from the audience when asked if they knew. They expected beadle to walk out
That last letters round only had 2 vowels. And I don't think there was supposed to be that many K's either. I wonder if there was another "round" in there in the event Richard picked up the selection not being allowed?
I'm surprised they didn't swallow their tongues avoiding laughing at this
Just realised that 'something' was literally up.
29:14 Richard guesses the truth.
But most of all, he liked Saving Private Ryan.
There was a young lady from Bude
Who went for a swim in the lake
A man in a punt
Shoved an oar in her ear
And said, you can't swim in here, it's dangerous.
I didn't get the pun if there was one.
Who played Richard Max's Mother?
up
29:15 says it all!
Bless him he had a sense of humour failure...the gritted teeth and the way his face falls when the camera stops rolling lol. I thought he had twigged at 29.15 though when he mentions a windup.
