  • In this video I'm going to show how I make a DIY rocket stove out of old cans. I'm using a big #10 can, a regular soup can, and a 46oz tomato juice can. This is my latest rocket stove and I've made some improvements to previous designs, which I'll demonstrate by boiling water and then frying up some bacon on a full-size cast iron skillet.

Perfect! I have been wanting to make one of these, but was dreading using the tin snips to cut holes.

Just and observation. These cans are not made from aluminum. They are steel cans coated on the inside with a food safe coating to prevent corrosion. Aluminum is not applicable for these cooked in can food items.

Look for samovars with rocket burner in the centre

Yes the large can would be a number 10 can. The medium size or tomato juice can would be a number 5 can. At least that's what we have always called them in the kitchens I've worked in.

On days you can't burn sticks due to being too soggy from rain, snow, ice, and sleet an alcohol burner would fit very well into the feed hole. Plus, you can adjust the burner by reaching into the feed hole. The rocket stove would be great for burning sticks, and alcohol.

How did that sealant hold up?

It held up pretty well. I'm sure it won't last forever if I use the stove a lot, but I think it definitely helps.

I used dirt, but next time I'm using gravel. It got messy.

If you want to save weight, you can use garden perlite
