However, she was barely given any time to speak on this particular podcast episode as the interviewer dominated the interview with his perspectives. He should learn how to conduct a proper interview from great podcast hosts like Lex Fridman. His three hour episode featuring Annie Jacobsen is the gold standard of interviewing!
I think the podcast is great! I think if you don't appreciate lawrence's style, then perhaps you should continue to watch lex fridmans instead of complaining.

Doing science, like “doing” the imaginative use of words (poetry, on one definition) is at base also thinking imaginatively. Of course that won’t exist if Annie’s take is plausible.
How do you imagine achieving this when the most powerful country in the world has to choose a president from such candidates as Biden and Trump. The world seems to be doomed.
One wonders, as I have often wondered and been frustratingly puzzled by is why in this world, in this existence and place in time, the voices of people with knowledge, intellegence and wisdom such as we are hearing here are drowned out, relagated to the sidelines, ignored etc., and those in of lesser mind (even childish mentalities as we are now experiencing) in positions of power who ignore, sideline and denegrate these important voices, instead hold sway and influence in media and among the populace of so many countries. We are truly living in an upside down world.

fyi.. Somewhat sophisticated, city-leveling nuclear device is no bigger than a public school classroom fire extinguisher. Very difficult to detect. I lived with 48 of them inside missile tubes and never got a click on my side of the launch tube. Using DOD grade beta/gamma and neutron detectors.
Something makes a bit of noise about the proposal to do with North Corea attacking the US, but the US not retaliating to them.... but Rusia? In this scenario why North Corea keeps attacking the USA after they detect (1 second later) they launch a ICBM? Doesn't make sense.
I see what you are saying. But how can we get rid of our nuclear weapons unless we are certain that everyone else is doing the same? People don’t trust each other. This is the root of the problem. We need a new generation of leaders and a new world peace movement. Once the people of all the country’s of the world get tired of this madness it will end.
One problem with being a scientist is that when one is constantly in the company of highly intelligent people it is easy to forget just how stupid the average human really is. This often leads to what can seem like amusingly naive optimism about the motivations & morality of others due judging those outside that tiny bubble based on the mental acuity of those within it. One does not become a dictator by being smart. One becomes a dictator by being ruthless and paranoid. That such individuals would do the smart, logical or rational thing in any situation is not something that I'd wager money on.
I don't know if you read these comments or not, but it would be a perfect follow-up to interview Jake Broe. He's a previous ICBM missileer and could fill inn many details that you missed out in this mostly excellent dialogue.
According to a Chinese academic, detonating around 400 atomic bombs could wipe out humanity. This estimate is based on calculations that assume the same effect as the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which could destroy around 2 billion lives. So why do we need any more than say 20 nuclear weapons or 30 or 10? Because if we launch and Russia launches and Israel, launches and Pakistan launches and United Kingdom and France launches The entire planet is annihilated So what’s the point of 1700 or 1600 nuclear weapons with an arsenal of another 2000 sitting in a warehouse ? It’s freaking pointless. There is no winner in nuclear war so having more weapons is a pointless path to follow Everybody on the planet, even those who have no aggression towards anybody fall victim If any president in the future has the balls to say, I’m dropping our nuclear arsenal down to 50 weapons Who knows what the results might be globally. Lawrence, this episode was quite frustrating. WHY did you even invite Annie Jacobsen? You talked for 15 minutes straight, then gave her a minute to speak before interrupting and taking over again. This wasn't a podcast conversation with an esteemed guest; it was you monologuing with Annie as a prop to back you up. You could have simply talked about her book yourself and had her introduce it separately, then stitched the two parts together. I like the channel and enjoy listening to you while I'm editing, so you talking isn't the issue. You talking 80% while your guest talks 20% is!

It has been the US exclusively that unilaterally withdrew from arms control treaties and doesn't include a raft of other international agreements it withdrew from throughout the same period. It started with Bush in 2002 who withdraw the US from the ABM treaty. Trump followed suit by withdrawing from the INF Treaty in 2019 & the OST in 2020. Russia has been the mature & rational actor throughout.
At aaround 25:20, concering the 'call back' of nuclear weapons and what Reagan thought, with my limited level of knowledge of the nuclear force triad, I think what you are talking about when you're talking about 'recalling' a nuclear weapon is actually _recalling strategic bombers carrying nuclear bombs to be dropped._ Obiviously, nuclear missles cannot be recalled--whether they are land based _or submarine launched_ Reagan likely was talking about strategic bombers, not ICBMs (Although with Reagan and the Republican mind, you may be right about him not knowing.)
The art of presenting the audience with an enlightening discussion is to coerce the guest into revealing their insights and expertise. Allowing them to do most of the talking by feeding them with a short question has proven to be a good technique.
We do have interceptors that can and do intercept ballistic missiles in their mid course and terminal phase. The ones that target the mid course phase aren’t very effective. 52% success rate. ICBMs are harder to shoot down this is true. But on the whole it’s useless.
Is humanity's established nuclear warfare capabilities any more insane and incomprehensible than our ecological conundrum or our egregious income disparities? It seems that, as a species, we have bungled every opportunity to do wiser things. Instead of ever-greater cohesion and wisdom we are reverting gut-level tribalism not seen since the "stone age".
The United States can shoot down a rogue ballistic missile or 2 or 3 from North Korea. We have interceptors right now in Alaska, California, and Guam specifically because of North Korea. These interceptors I think there are 50 of them in total can shoot down ballistic missiles In their mid course phase so right after the boost phase and before the terminal phase. These missiles aren’t perfect and are about 60% success rate so at least 2 per ballistic missile would have to be launched. In the terminal phase we have Patriot Missiles and THAAD throughout the country. THAAD is in Texas I know for sure not sure where else it can shoot down warheads in their terminal phase our to about 500 miles and they are very accurate. It’s easier to shoot them down in their terminal phase. And if for whatever reason THAAD is unsuccessful we have Patriot which again is VERY accurate. But this is only going to work for a couple of rogue missiles from North Korea or somewhere else. In a full scale war with Russia these defenses would be overwhelmed pretty quickly and while some would be intercepted most would not. It’s a very small comfort at lease. We need a new mass peace movement to sweep the world. Biden will win re election and the Democrats will take back the House of Representatives in November. If this I have little doubts. We need to relegate the maga fascist movement to the dustbin of history. And Putin must be stippped. He must be stopped and he must go if you know what I mean. Russia isn’t going to use a nuclear weapon. I think the chances of that are extraordinarily low. But an accident is what I worry about. In 1983 nuclear war was averted because 1 Russian Colonel did not do as he was told and did not obey orders. His radar said there was a full scale attack by the US underway and his orders were to launch his missiles. He didn’t. It turns out it was geese migrations up to Canada that was mistaken for a missile attack. Most people don’t know about this. EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW. If not for this Russian Colonol disobeying orders civilization would have ended. We need a new peace movement. We need to formally declare we have a no first use policy. China has this policy.
Looking for a story. You already have it. Yet the nuances that would reflect the emotional context of the story became a Maria Antoinette perspective in the future. Let the future eat bread.
1500 weapons on hair trigger alert status to be exact Lawrence. And only 450 of them are in silos in the United States. The minutman 3 ICBM can hold and deploy up to 3 warheads but we are treaty limited to have only 1 on them now. Although I think Russia withdrew from that treaty so I don’t know now. The rest are on Ohio class ballistic missile submarines of which we have 14 that carry 16 treaty limited missiles but the subs can carry 20 missiles and the Trudident SLBM’s in the subs are of 2 varieties. Some of them have up to 14 warheads and others have 7. And the rest are deployed with Bombers and yes we have forward deployed weapons in Europe. There are US nuclear gravity bombs in England, Germany, and Italy and tumoured to be in Poland too. Our submarine force by itself would be enough to totally destroy Russia. We still have more ballistic missile subs than the Russians. A lot more. It is the ultimate weapon and keeps the peace. Russia could completely wipe out the continental United States and Russia would still be utterly destroyed. And I head they are loading the subs back with 20 missiles be air again Russia chose to withdraw from a treaty we signed. And as part of that treaty we got rid of all of our nuclear tipped Tomahawk cruise missiles. They are coming back. And the B-52’s can carry 22 Air Launched Cruise missiles with a range of 1700 miles and the missiles have a fail a yield warhead meaning it can be pre selected to have a 5 KT blast or a 50 kt blast. A 16 kt blast destroyed Hiroshima Japan and a 20 Kt blast destroyed Navgasaki.
What is interesting is that these nuclear arsenals have supposedly been built because of differences in economic ideologies and yet no one can advocate mandatory accounting in the schools or tally the annual depreciation of durable consumer goods. Can scientists figure out planned obsolescence in automobiles? LOL
This is a difficult but necessary conversation. Humanity can end anytime the way things are going on with geopolitics with the US in endless wars. My only problem is that the discussion proceeded on the basis of the enemy initiating the nuclear missles and the US is the victim. Therefore, war mongers will clamour for more fund to modernise its nuclear arsenal, again feeding the weapons industry. The only way for humanity to survive is to build greater trust and understanding between nations and engage in more diplomacy. We need an anti-war movement to ensure that the war mongers do not have the upper hand.
Have you ever seen pictures from russia's mass graves in occupied Ukraine? I have seen some, with grandmothers, kids and other civilians. I'm not even allowed to describe them on youtube, but you can stuff your butt with your russian 'peace'. It's nothing else than ISIS with nukes.
Of course they first thought a nuclear bomb would set the atmosphere on fire so why would we think anyone exactly knows how devastating nuclear war would be. Chernobyl is in full bloom.
At least the ambassadors from Russia and the United States have not been withdrawn. The Russian ambassador in still in DC and the Russian ambassador is still in Moscow.
I don’t think nuclear war is a matter of time. I think a nuclear weapon MIGHT be used again by someone in the next 10 years but I don’t think nuclear war is inevitable. I can’t think that. If I thought that I would just give up on life. And I am well versed in what would happen in such a full scale war. In 1967 the United States had a book about what exactly would happen in the event of nuclear war. It was declassified in 1992 and I read it. It’s much worse than you could probably possibly imagine. The lucky people will be the ones that are vaporized instantly.

I listened to MIT professor Theodore Postol describe the sequence of events following a detonation of a nuclear bomb- it's terrifying.

The minutman 3 ICBM can hold and deploy up to 3 warheads but we are treaty limited to have only 1 on them now. Although I think Russia withdrew from that treaty so I don’t know now. The rest are on Ohio class ballistic missile submarines of which we have 14 that carry 16 treaty limited missiles but the subs can carry 20 missiles and the Trudident SLBM’s in the subs are of 2 varieties. Some of them have up to 14 warheads and others have 7. And the rest are deployed with Bombers and yes we have forward deployed weapons in Europe. There are US nuclear gravity bombs in England, Germany, and Italy and tumoured to be in Poland too. Our submarine force by itself would be enough to totally destroy Russia. We still have more ballistic missile subs than the Russians. A lot more. It is the ultimate weapon and keeps the peace. Russia could completely wipe out the continental United States and Russia would still be utterly destroyed. And I head they are loading the subs back with 20 missiles be air again Russia chose to withdraw from a treaty we signed. And as part of that treaty we got rid of all of our nuclear tipped Tomahawk cruise missiles. They are coming back. And the B-52’s can carry 22 Air Launched Cruise missiles with a range of 1700 miles and the missiles have a fail a yield warhead meaning it can be pre selected to have a 5 KT blast or a 50 kt blast. A 16 kt blast destroyed Hiroshima Japan and a 20 Kt blast destroyed Navgasaki.
What is interesting is that these nuclear arsenals have supposedly been built because of differences in economic ideologies and yet no one can advocate mandatory accounting in the schools or tally the annual depreciation of durable consumer goods.

This is a difficult but necessary conversation. Humanity can end anytime the way things are going on with geopolitics with the US in endless wars.
My only problem is that the discussion proceeded on the basis of the enemy initiating the nuclear missles and the US is the victim. Therefore, war mongers will clamour for more fund to modernise its nuclear arsenal, again feeding the weapons industry.
The only way for humanity to survive is to build greater trust and understanding between nations and engage in more diplomacy. We need an anti-war movement to ensure that the war mongers do not have the upper hand.
Have you ever seen pictures from russia's mass graves in occupied Ukraine? I have seen some, with grandmothers, kids and other civilians. I'm not even allowed to describe them on youtube, but you can stuff your butt with your russian 'peace'. It's nothing else than ISIS with nukes.

I don’t think nuclear war is a matter of time. I think a nuclear weapon MIGHT be used again by someone in the next 10 years but I don’t think nuclear war is inevitable. I can’t think that. If I thought that I would just give up on life. And I am well versed in what would happen in such a full scale war. In 1967 the United States had a book about what exactly would happen in the event of nuclear war. It was declassified in 1992 and I read it. It’s much worse than you could probably possibly imagine. The lucky people will be the ones that are vaporized instantly.
