  • No chickens harmed here! These Sweet Sesame Cauliflower "Wings" are the perfect vegan snack without any guilt! The cauliflower florets mimic the tenderness and neutral taste of chicken wings. Coating in breadcrumbs make it crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. But with our sweet sesame sauce, they are WAAYYY better!
    INGREDIENTS:
1 head cauliflower, cut into florets (about 2 cups)
    1 cup Japanese Breadcrumbs
Chopped green onions and sesame seeds, for garnish
    For the Batter:
    1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened soy milk (or any plant milk as long as it's unsweetened)
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    freshly ground black pepper
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
For the Sauce (NOTE: Use half for coating and save the rest for dipping)
4 tablespoons brown sugar (or any sweetener like maple syrup)
6 tablespoons low sodium soy sauce
    1 teaspoon sesame seeds
    1/2 teaspoon grated ginger
    1/2 cup water
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional but highly recommended)
cornstarch slurry (2 teaspoons cornstarch + 2 teaspoon water)
    chopped green onions
1 For the batter, add all ingredients in a bowl and mix until well combined. You want a consistency that’s not too thick or too runny. If it becomes thick, add more soy milk.
2 In a separate bowl, add the Japanese Breadcrumbs. Toss the cauliflower in the batter mixture then transfer them to the breadcrumbs to coat.
3 In a pan over medium high heat shallow fry the cauliflower for 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Drain excess oil from the cauliflower with paper towels or in a cooling rack. To bake the cauliflower, preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit /230 degrees Celsius and bake for 20 minutes or so.
4 For the sauce: In a sauce pan over medium-high heat, mix all the sauce ingredients well. Bring to a boil, then a simmer for about 5 minutes until the sauce begins to thicken. Taste and add more sugar, soy sauce, or chili flakes if you want it sweeter, saltier, or spicier. Remove from heat and let cool before tossing with the cauliflower.
5 Use about half of the sauce to toss with the cauliflower and half for dipping (we preferred to do this so we can adjust how much sauce goes into the cauliflower). Top with more sesame seeds and spring onions! Serve while warm and crispy with the remaining sauce as dip.
