Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals and MLB on the off-day for St. Louis 7/11/24.
Did we avoid a doomsday scenario with a Tommy Edman setback? Seemingly, yes. We'll explain the latest there after his rehab game on Thursday.
The Pirates pulled Paul Skenes after 7 no-hit innings and 99 pitches. Was it a mistake? Brenden actually didn't mind the decision, and he explains why.
Max Scherzer recently said he won't waive his no-trade clause, but Brenden isn't sure it's that simple. The context of the question and answer might reveal more about the situation, so we break it down.

Max was just saying what he had to right now. Everything he said just sounded like he absolutely wasn't going to discuss it. I'll be very happy if we finally pick him up. I wish Mo would have drafted him and he'd spent his whole career as a Cardinal, but I'll take what I can get.

When Skenes was getting out-dueled by Mikolas, the pirates manager sent Skenes back out for the 6th with over 100 pitches only to get pulled after one out. I wonder if that played into the thought process.

  • @KevinWM2

The hype around Skenes and the fact that he's even better than advertised reminds me of when Gooden came up and lit the world on fire. Before that, Fernando Valenzuela would be my next comparison... except Fernando came from nowhere to become an immediate phenom.

You 100% keep skenes in there. As the pirates you're trying to build legacy, trust, momentum.... you gotta let him go for it.

Besides pitching, pitching, pitching, we really could use Brent Rooker as that clutch right handed hitter. If the Rangers fade, Get Max if he will still come. We should of had him a few years back, when Mo passed on him. Way too radical for Mo, but two trades for three people to make us a serious playoff team. Max Scherzer, Brent Rooker, relief pitcher from either team Yates from the Rangers or Miller in an A's trade. The cost would be steep, but would give us a deep run towards the World Series 🌎

@mikekeeler6362 If we don't go for it this year and next, then we might as well save more money and trade Goldschmidt and Arenado and go with the kids. He has won 3 Cy Young and has always wanted to pitch in St.Louis, which fits Big Mo's criteria. Other pitchers like Crochet will be snapped up by LA. We will be lucky to get Fedde when guys like Lorenzen were available for a bargain before the season started. Who do you think we should go after, I just want to win now... every year!!! LOL

@mikekeeler6362 Both players deserve a chance at the World Series. The Yankees need a first baseman, Goldschmidt for Clayton Beeter? The Dodgers need a third baseman and have about 100 good pitchers. Burleson at first, Donovan at third how much do we lose We need the pitching more now.

I agree 100% on Skenes. Would have more than likely taken him another 20 to 25 pitches to get through 9. He is a young kid and extending him doesn’t make sense to me. As good as he appears to be his time will come.

He's trying to be careful and talk in a very pr feindly way. Think he did a good job. I noticed Max Scherzer sort talked arround the thumb issue in the interview too, if it is going to be a problem moving forward he's going to try his best to play through it.

Since the last time I saw him play was in with the Dodgers in L.A., where he had a perfect game through 7 (lost in 8th), I would say that getting him would be worth it, even if just for just the rest of this year. Guessing when a great pitcher will end up begging what Clayton K is for Dodgers is above my pay grade. Signing him, knowing he might well return to Texas (if they like it there) the next year, it would still be a help. As someone who always dreamed of coming back (as a fan) to St. Louis, al this gets complicated once you are married with family. He has been on a lot of different teams, either separated from family moe time. I do not know his family situation at all, but moving, disrupting schools year-to-year gets harder. I turned down a college dean job and later a presidency of a small college because it just could not work with our family situation at those times (one academic 3:03 year, e.g., both my daughters were already scheduled to get married in Southern California. Since both jobs were at smaller colleges (far less prestigious than Pepperdine), the best decision, even career-wise was to turn down any ego needs I had. In the end, for me at least, family is every thing.

Here is a question. Is Skenes eligible for RoY? My understanding is the winning rookie must be on the opening day roster for a team to get a compensatory draft pick. Is it possible the Pirates will allow Skenes to pitch up to 49 innings and then send him down to preserve his rookie status for next season? Just wondering...... Since Mayson Winn, at this point, is in the talks for the RoY and was on the Cardinals opening day roster. If Skenes is ineligible, I like Winn's chances

    • @bschaeffer12
      @bschaeffer12  Před měsícem

He is eligible to win the award.
I don't know if he spent enough time on the roster for them to get the pick for it. But he can win the award. It doesn't have to be opening day but it's based on service time days and I don't think he's gonna quite get a full year for that purpose.
Skenes has already past 49 innings and there's no reason for them to care about his rookie status anyway

So….the hottest team in MLB comes to town. Good look for the NL Central. Both the Cardinals and Cubs have swept the Orioles. Hoping the Cards tune it up. Quick. Fast and In a hurry. They had better. Weary of this underachieving group. Go Cardinals. Winning is fun. “Because you had Goldy and Arenado good at baseball.” Indeed. Their decline is destroying our season. They must turn it around.
