Also in 1976 : - The Last Tycoon (Elia Kazan) - Cría Cuervos (Carlos Saura) - The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (John Cassavetes) - The Missouri Breaks (Arthur Penn) - Assault on Precinct 13 (John Carpenter) - Welfare (Frederick Wiseman)
Those are all great choices. It's interesting to see how gritty and realistic they look, including what is basically a fantasy, Rocky. That was the era. The only one I'd add is a personal fave, The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane. I love a tense "bottle" movie, and the cast, including Jodie Foster, is great.
My Top 10 1. All The Presidents Men 2. Car Wash 3. Taxi Driver 4. Rocky 5. Network 6. Carrie 7. Silver Streak 8. Bugsy Malone 9. Silent Movie 10. The Missouri Breaks
My Top 10: 10. Assault on Precinct 13 9. Silver Streak 8. The Enforcer 7. The Pink Panther Strikes Again 6. Silent Movie 5. Network 4. All the President's Men 3. Rocky 2. Carrie 1. Taxi Driver
I would have at least squeezed in Marathon Man somewhere in the top 10. Laurence Olivier's Christian Szell is one of the most iconic movie villains ever.
Network was prophetic , Honorable mention for a movie that was made that year , was the movie Silent Movie , to make a silent movie in 76 was a brave attempt at something different .
Agree with your list and wow, what a year, Marathon Man. The Omen. 1900 busy year for De Nero, Seven Percent Solution , Silver Streak. had great pairing. Wilder and Pryor. I Loved, Man Who Fell to Earth. worked at the theater where it played. Beautifully shot.
My 10 for 1976 10. Storm Boy 9. The Bad News Bears 8. The Outlaw Josey Wales 7. Harlan County USA 6. In The Realm of The Senses 5. Network 4. The Man Who Fell To Earth 3. The Killing of A Chinese Bookie 2. All The President's Men NUMBER ONE: TAXI DRIVER
so, recently rewatched Heart of glass and am dropping it from my films of ´76 ... as i remembered it starts wonderfully moody, enigmatic and apocalyptic but it kinda never really takes that road and loses a bit of focus in what it really wants to say and diluting its premise . Interestingly enough, the ending recovers the tone set in the very first scene but unfortunately too late . With certain films i have the feeling their potential is not fully developed and this is one of them . ... ps : since i´m here let me metion i think it is an interesting exercise in film analysis and the relationship between style and form to compare and contrast the films of Pakula´s "paranoiac trilogy" . Especially Parallax (which is a dark, pessimistic and radical film in it´s portrayal of, let´s say, modernity) and the watergate movie (which sits more comfortably with the status quo perception/portrayal of the press and the "power structures") ... it´s an interesting case in how the same director portrays 2 (in some ways) opposite perceptions of reality and how that is conveyed through image and form . Shame, Pakula , as many other hollywood directors of the time kinda discontinued their critique to make more "conservative-liberal" mainstream films or simply stopped making films altogether
Yes, that first ROCKY is outstanding and Stallone actually deserved to win the Oscar for best actor for that one, but why do you say the film is not quite set in the real world? Underdogs have certainly fought champions before, so I am not sure what your point was.
predicatbly some of the films i value are : face to face - i find Bergmans 70´s films in some ways the definitive statements/benchmarks on character depiction, relationship and complexity , coup de grace - it is a shame Schlondorff kinda abandoned his central european roots when he went on to make hollywood type films , casanova - imaginative, elusive, carnivalesque, irritating, oneiric - well, fellini , herz aus glas - contemplative, a kind of dyptich with Kaspar Hauser and a wonderful first sequence, the killing of a chinese bookie - offbeat , Kings of the road- may be Wenders´ first film to better fulfill its potential (he wont stop until Wings of desire is completed ), if one is overcome by a disturbing sinister-like feeling one might include Narciso ibanez-serrador´s who can kill a child? (and argue wether it was a strong influence -a year or two later- on a certain prolific horror writer), i also have a fond memory of Mickey and Nicky but memory has proved unreliable in the past so i´ll just put a question mark there somewhere ... gotta finally watch that harlan county film - now that i´ve been encouraged to... regards
The last year I lived in San Diego my parents went to Escondido CA, (My Birthplace) and we watched Rocky at the drive in. I ren er thinking it was going to be a movie about “Rocky and Bullwinkle” then I see this guy bouncing a ball, and thought….Hmmm I think I’ll go to sleep. Little did I know how good it was. And what a iconic movie it would be. A few years back they made the movie “The Real Rocky” or something like that, the real life story of the man that they used to make the movie about. I always thought after that the movie was released that they should have given him more credit, I mean it was basically the guys story that they adopted to create Rocky, right???
here ya go: 1900 Bernardo Bertolucci Robert De Niro then Barocco Bartleby Body of My Enemy Black and White in Color A Child in the Crowd The Choice Comme un boomerang Le dernier femme The Desert of the Tartars Dracula and Son
A decent list but The Outlaw Josey Wales should be at least in the top three. I guess because this guy is a Brit and just doesn't fully appreciate Westerns causes him to underrate one of the best westerns ever made.
any top 10 with a Rocky film in it is bizarre at best and to have it above all the presidents men shows a complete lack............ not watching this channel again.
Positives ✔️
A One Too Many video came out
Negatives ❌
Now I have to wait for the next One Too Many video
Haha. Cheers
Good choices i think your spot on, my personal favourites include; At the Earths Core, and the remake of King Kong. Both bad movies but I love them.
I love the 1976 King Kong! Me and Chris did a video about it a few years ago. It's definitely a guilty pleasure for me.
Very good choices. I would have put in the list Marathon Man, Fellini's Casanova and Assault on Precint 13.
My Top 5
1. Rocky
2. Outlaw Josey Wales

Damn I was meant to watch The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane. I'll give it a look. Such a good year for Jodie Foster!
@@1-2many I know! I wish we saw more of her as an actress recently. She's produced the odd thing, and appeared in small roles, but not much.

Body of My Enemy
Black and White in Color
A Child in the Crowd
The Choice

Le dernier femme
The Desert of the Tartars
Dracula and Son
Calls Scott baio a bastard but says nothing about Polanski 🙄
I was thinking the same thing. Shows how screwed up some people are.
Carrie.
No list with Bugsy Malone on it but not Marathon Man Is Not Safe !!!
A decent list but The Outlaw Josey Wales should be at least in the top three. I guess because this guy is a Brit and just doesn't fully appreciate Westerns causes him to underrate one of the best westerns ever made.
Bad News Bears
Logan's Run
Mother, Jugs and Speed
The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings
The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox
The Omen
Sandra Locke's book was a complete flop
I clicked on this by mistake. I don't accept anything said by an alcoholic.
I know one thing about watching a few of this dude's videos he's a drunk
any top 10 with a Rocky film in it is bizarre at best and to have it above all the presidents men shows a complete lack............ not watching this channel again.
