Here is Denis Behr's Conjuring Archive - an invaluable resource for any student of the art: www.conjuringarchive.com
If you want some of the tools I use to study my library, below are some links to the most important tools:
A+ Book Stand: I love this thing. It helps me practice the tricks without having to interrupt my hand movements with propping the book open. - amzn.to/2PmsX9j (affiliate link)
Close-up Mats: Vanishing Inc. offers several varieties of close-up mats, from a basic version (what I use) to a deluxe, customized pad. See what they have to offer at bit.ly/3hWUQ45 (affiliate link)
Dotted hardcover notebook: you're going to need a good place to keep notes, thoughts, and drawings. These notebooks offer flexibility as well as a wide range of colors to help you remember. - amzn.to/2PfMU1J (affiliate link)
Book darts: these will make it a breeze to mark the correct spot in your book; never again forget where a good trick resides! - amzn.to/3fkA1xZ (affiliate link)
Post-It Flags: These are a different alternative to the book darts, and since they stick out of the book and are colored, you can use the colors to give yourself a visual indication of where you stand with that book - amzn.to/2EAFl3u (affiliate link)
Uniball Micro 207 pens: these are my favorite pens with which to take notes. The ink is smooth and makes it a delight to revisit your thoughts - amzn.to/3glSL1q (affiliate link)

    Great info ! 🎉
I'm 58, and started with a magic kit at age 10. 🎩 ✨️ 🐰 I took lessons at age 14 and I still say the best stuff is hidden in books. 📚 That's the way magic was shared then, books and individual instruction. Someone correctly observed that videos ARE good for teaching TIMING. I think it was Johnny Thompson ? 🤔
Anyway, I love learning from magic books and I throw away the dust jackets. 😊

Write in the book. For over 50 years I avoided this and now regret that I was so stupid. Write in the book and keep on adding to it. Over time, you will personalize and make it your very own. Write in the book.

Completely agree with you. Books are tools not pristine jewels. They make us think, practice, imagine... And foremost I always read a (good) book twice. Having notes allows me to jump faster on the key instructions and informations. It proved to be very effective for my work on magic ! A good reader writes on books! 📚 (from 🇫🇷)

Great stuff! Nobody ever talks about the struggle of how to study from the wealth of information that many magicians end up with on their shelves. It's easy to get overwhelmed and never take full advantage of all the books without a good study plan like this. Thanks for the video!

This is probably a thought more in line with magical study but can fit books, too. I divide a month in to card magic weeks and non- card weeks. Within those weeks I limit the book time to the appropriate type of week. If I'm travelling it is a read only week. Love (!) new discoveries in books but that is the problem! If I dont limit what I read, I end up limiting what I learn and can perform.

I've always been curious if people had tricks or tips or "best practices" for their personal style of book learning. I am best with hands on with a teacher so to speak, but thw plethora of knowledge available is invaluable! These are great to get going in the right direction!!
Thanks so much, LOVE the channel!!

Having a teacher can be great, but that's not an option for a lot of people. And, it comes with its own set of risks...ever met someone who learned from Slydini? The Italian accent and gestures came with the performance. 🤣 Thanks for your words of encouragement!

    • @MrMcMaN
      @MrMcMaN Před 3 lety +1

@@EruditeMagic you're absolutely correct! Having a teacher can be difficult to find especially in these "uncertain times" and even if you do have one like you said there are some natural subtleties that could get in the way of teaching. Books enable you to take what you need & prefer away from the learnings.
      Thanks Again!!!

Thank you for this review. Like you, I have written in one of my books in the past and boy do I regret it. My mildly OCD self cringes every time I open that particular book. Unless I stepped away for a moment and missed something, there is something that I do when I have finally decided on a particular trick to learn. Using my printer/copier, I copy the trick that I want to learn. I can then write notes on the copied document, highlight and lastly, take it anywhere I want. It beats lugging the book around. I then place it in a binder divided into categories. This makes it easier to come back to if I somehow want to learn a trick again. There is one negative that comes to mind (besides the obvious one...using up resources...ink, paper) and that is, you may not want to subject your book to the stress of copying the book itself...namely stress to the spine. Keep the reviews coming. There is really no one out there that emphasizes reviews of magic books alone. Thanks again.

The methodology I use now is mark the page with a post-it flag, then make a digital note (I use evernote) to list the book, the page, the flag colour (unlike you I just use whatever colour is next rather than colour code stuff), and what I want to highlight. Then any notes (dated) about my thoughts on it. The reason I started doing this was after my library started to expand, I couldn't always be sure which specific book something was in. Working like this means I can do a quick text search to find what I need (and where), or if I want I can still go in from the book side if I already know.

Thank you so much for making this video. I think I can really use some of those tips! Resigned to Miracles was also one of the books I was thinking of buying. The only thing I want too know before I buy it, is it indeed only possible to sing the back of the card or would it also be possible to use this methode to sing the front of the card?
