I believe ‘Notebook’ is such an underrated Malayalam film which explores teen pregnancy and female friendships and, in an unspoken way, the importance of sex education - things that aren’t widely seen in Indian movies, let alone Malayalam cinema industry.
That movie traumatized the shit outta me when I watched it as kid. But still a great watch

but its not underrated!!
"Guppy" is among the top of my list.. made with so much heart it was taken off from screens after the the third day of release in most of the theaters. Even though the few like me who got to watch it before it was taken out gave good word of mouth it couldn't get enough audience into halls, also Ann maria Kalippilanu released the same day did much better because of the cameo of DQ.
Asif Ali's filmography is full of underratted gems. Adventures of Omanakuttan is my personal fav.
Also reccomending people to watch Ee adutha kaalathu, one of the best black-comedy/ thrillers of all time.
Mumbai Police (2013), one of the all time underrated movies. Always

I wanted to mention about 'dasharatham' . it surely is a classic in these days but from what I had heard when the movie had released it got a lot of negative comments because the theme of the movie was very unconventional at that time .
I'm so lucky I grew up reading novels like Mathilukal. Reading or watching stories like this, can be great deal in developing ur own character as a teenager. The movie is also stunning, Mammootty and KPSC Lalitha killed it🔥🔥 bt those who can read Malayalam, pls do read Mathilukal, it's a short read.. feel the love, embrace it.

You can't restrict Malayalam cinema to just 10. Even a hundred or thousand won't be enough. But I'll give you just one film that deserves to be seen in these troubled and polarized times.. Based on the novella The Valley Of The Blind.. the 1997 Mohanlal Suresh Gopi movie.. GURU..

Thaniyavarthanam. The best social psycho drama ever in malayalam. It's really one of the best of Mammootty. Social awareness at its peak. ❤️🔥 Lohitha das made a eye opener for society in 1987 itself.
'Danny' is a movie I wanted to recommend you. Don't know how well you would connect with the film because the life story of the protagonist happens parallel to the political history of Kerala. But irrespective of that Daniel Thompson would be a man whom you would like to see once. Just give it a try. For me, the most underrated Mammootty performance. Of course any one who have seen it would rate it high. But the movie deserve more audience.

Pingami a movie by the actor director combo Mohanlal-Sathyan Anthikad seems to be a most underrated movie for me. This actor director combo is famous for their romcom feel-good movies, for the first time they tried to make a thriller which failed the box office
Most of the movies I wanted to say have already been listed, but I didn't see "Moonamathoral" anywhere yet! That's a really good movie even though most people don't know about it..

Devadoothan,Guru,Guppi,Adam joan,Aadu(1),notebook,summer in Bethlehem etc and i think there are many such movies in Malayalam which actually deserved more popularity but failed in theatres.

as u said abt Ibilis...I would suggest ppl should watch Asif Ali's movies though he is not familiar among other language audience lyk Nivin,Fahadh r DQ...when it comes 2 mallu movies u can easily find a gud movie 2 watch... sometimes d writers, sometimes d lead actors, sometimes a small character artist also helps u 2 choose d movie...even d not so gud mallu movie also hav solid performance by d actors...tat makes u 2 watch it completely...thy r something magic for sure❤✨

Mammootty's character of Bhaskara Patelar in "Vidheyan" is the greatest ever villainous performance in Indian cinema.

Moonam Mura and dhouthyam. Both good thrillers that has some good action and a great performance by Mohammad. Very underrated as well.
Another under rated movie is the late 80's mammootty movie written by MT Vasudevan Nair & directed by Pavithran
" Utharam". I wish this movie was released in this era as the story, the plot all are still fresh. Though investigative in nature the movie like typical MT style has a great flow but more of a poetry type which have great inner meanings if you could unravel them.

"Swathandryam ardharatriyil ". Directed by tinu papachan. Oh man, i love this filim.Such an exciting movie. I would say, it is the all time underrated movie in malayalam cenema.
Guru is possibly one of the best cult classic Malayalam movie in the likes of "Ten Commandments" or "Agora"
Basheer in Mathilukal is the name of the author of the novel by the same name - the unparalleled Vaikom Muhammed Basheer aka Beypore Sultan. Much of the magic of the movie goes to the story.

devadoothan is the real underrated movie of all time in malayalam cinema.
If you think Mathilukal is good, read the original source material from Malayalams all time greatest writer, Vaikkom Muhammed Basheer. Its a very short read, but it is so wonderfully pleasent while being deeply philosophical.

Oh bruh. There are many Malayalam films that are really underrated. For example, Joju's movies are underrated- Jospeh, Madhuram...its a huge list. Coming to thrillers, Nayattu is a must watch. Even Anjam Pathira is so good. Lalettans old movies are class, even Mamookaas too. Amma ariyan is also too good, John Abhrahams..
Atmakatha, directed by Premlal, was so meaningful and beautiful, but not even critics like you mentioned it.

Basicaly every good malayalam movie from the 80s,90s,2000s are under rated for me,for the level of content and the versatile films that were made during these periods,no industry had movies that matched mollywood, even tamil yes,except few films from tamil,most were cliche mass films,until 2000s.I just feel that people who dint waych mollywood movies from these era..anyone.. tamilian,kannadiga,north indian or even mallu himsef,is unlucky.. they just missed something so gem.
Most films of Padamarajan were commercial failures back then. Later all of them became classics
