  • @ME7_RR3
    @ME7_RR3 Před rokem +6

    Great video! So many people want 37 inches, but 37 inches isn’t the magic B length. People are misunderstanding the purpose of fan frets. It’s more so about evening string tension and as such, tone & volume. Shortening the higher strings below 34 inches actually makes them sound fatter and fuller.
    Compare a Les Paul to a Strat. It’s only a 0.75 inch scale difference but it’s noticeable. I’ve seen many 6 string electric and acoustic fan players use the 24.75 to 25.5 fan design for the best of both Les Paul and Strat.
    Sheldon Dingwall did not base his 37” B on math, he just kept playing with distances until he found one that sounded good to him. Just look at a full-size grand piano… the same B note there is more like 77 inches long!! Then there’s a piano that is 19 feet long 😲.
    Dingwall has been using the same 37 inch fan design for about 30 years. However they only became popular and “mainstream” when 8 & 9 string guitars took over. As someone else mentioned here, 37 is more critical for people tuning to G, F or even lower. Don’t get me wrong, 37 makes an awesome B! I’m just saying it’s not perfect. A full size double bass has a 40 to 44 inch E string!
    I have an Ibanez SRMS806 which is 33.6 C to 35.5 B. I can drop A and it sounds awesome. You can hear the difference between A & B. However it’s 10 pounds and I’m getting too old for this 😅. I’m looking at this headless & chambered Ibanez as a weight loss option. I’ll miss the Hipshot drop tune option, but I can just learn to play in drop A all the time.
    Dingwall was going to make headless basses but COVID pushed that to the back burner with all the factory shut downs and production falling behind. I would love see one of those!😃

      Gonna tell you the cliché answer from an experienced bassist who has own and tried all kind of different basses (boutique included). You go with that's bass (which sounds good ngl) to a recording session, and the producer will say: "Yes, sounds cool....do you also have a P-Bass?" There is a reason why classic design are still so demanded and popular, cause they were designed to sound the best in the mix, right in the spot frequencies between all the instruments. As I said, I've had many basses, most of the boutique ones have amazing features and sounded great and unique when playing alone at home, yet their performance is worse against a standard or vintage P-Bass in the mix in a recording or live situation... .so that's why.
      At the end of the day after more than 70 years of history the basses are not rocket science, you just put a good electronics in the right spot and that's it, sounds great for its purpose which is to serve the music. And that is a P or a J bass.

      @@D14V0R05 The electronics and the distance of the pickups in regards the dimensions of the bass are the most important. For that you need to have good P/J pickups in the right spot on the bass... of course that's relative and there's dozens of versions of P/J variants. My previous comment was more regarding the modern bass features and designs like the Ibanez one.

    I'd never had any desire to own a 6-string until I saw this instrument. I demoed the 1005 and 1505 recently and while they weren't quite my style, I loved the design and the neck. On a 6-string the headless multi-scale thing makes a ton of sense, and getting it to under 8 pounds is a real feat. So now my GAS is raging again, thanks.

    How hard would it be for Ibby to have a "direct purchase" online interface where you could pick body color/stain, pickups (not config, just pickups that fit), and preamp (again, not the # of knobs, just what uses them)? Something like that would give them options to charge (prolly at a premium) but limited enough that it wouldn't be overwrought...

    Too bad the neck scale was not extended to a longer one of up to 37" you'll get more tension so that low note can come out more. I am still finding a lot of youtube demos of fanned fret the lowest note seems to drop out in tone, string guage thickness??

  • @jdjk7
    @jdjk7 Před rokem

    In general, I like the idea. I'd like to get one in hand. But I'm not super crazy about going for a 6 string headless, because that really limits your string choices.
    I also would prefer to get it in a passive model. I know it can go into passive mode, but I'd just as soon not have an active system and do other things with those knobs and switches. Plus, it seems odd to me that they would use this split coil design and not make it an actual split coil... I think I understand why they did it, but I still don't really like that they did it.

    The scale length doesn't make a lot of sense to me. When I get a multi-scale I don't want a shorter scale on E thru G strings, I get it because I want a longer scale on the B string.... This line in Ibanez seems to be a bit of a miss for me on that aspect.
