I DEEPLY RESENT this “journalist” normalizing this police brutality against a child with special needs as “discipline”. It is excruciatingly clear, what her opinion on the matter is-and that is not her job. Unless this is an opinion piece, she has no ethical ground upon which to stand. Right after she uses her position and access to plant the idea in the public’s mind that they did nothing wrong, and this was just misunderstood “discipline”, she tells us that it is against the law. By definition “discipline” applied to a child (especially one with special needs) without legal grounds is ABUSE, and as adults with badges and guns did it, that makes it also police brutality. Every single adult involved should be arrested, fired, and barred from ever being given the privilege of holding a job that requires the public trust. Then prison.

Every adult FAILED in this situation. A fifth grader should never be called in this situation, and those teachers need classroom management training. Why were t the parents called in this situation or at minimum a phone call made? Why? It is clear that the administration and teachers were complicit in ruining a child, who’s different from them - life whether it’s intentional or not. Horrible teachers and administrators.

I simply could not tolerate that and without a doubt I would put my hands on that cop. Handcuffs are meant to keep suspects from hurting themselves and other people. If those cops believe that that little girl was a danger to them, they are in the wrong field because they are COWARDS! The only reason they put handcuffs on that baby was because the cuffs were used as a punishment and they absolutely needed to punish her because she didn’t instantly submit to their perceived authority. This reminds me of when I was 15. Got into a fight with a buddy of mine over a girl. Silly I know. At the time both of us agreed to the fight, it wasn't a bully vs bullied type of situation. It was two young kids wanting to fight each other over the attention of a girl. After the fight I learned my buddy, who is still my buddy to this day 15+ years later. He had got a concussion and his father brought him to the hospital. I guess while at the hospital the police got involved and tried convincing the dad to press assault charges against me. Luckily for me, the dad knew me very well, he knew this wasn't a common thing between his son and I. He declined pressing charges and instead he chose to gather myself, my father, his son and himself down to talk it out and explain how silly all of it was. I am very lucky to have had that opportunity and I owe him a lot for being level headed about the whole situation. Kids make mistakes all the time, kids can turn violent over the silliest of situations. Slapping them with a very serious charge that will follow them for the rest of their lives I feel like is a bit overkill. I respect the police and all, but honestly I feel like they are not really around to fix a situation and make it better. They just know how to deescalate a situation by placing someone in cuffs which in some situations, is not the correct way to do things imo. Now I'm not saying children should be free of consequences, obviously there are plenty of kids who break the law who are aware of our relaxed laws and chose to do illegal activities because they know they'll just get a slap on the wrist. But in the eyes of the law, a simple fued between friends and an actual assault between two people are all the same to them.
