Why Did Jesus Send the 70 Disciples?

- How do the 70 (or 72) disciples, sent out by Jesus, point to the worldwide mission of the church? What is the symbolism of wiping the dust from one’s feet? How is language about the fall of the King of Babylon applied to Capernaum? How did Sodom’s grotesque breach of hospitality apply to other cities? Which Jewish literature uses “lambs in the midst of wolves” to describe God’s people surrounded by the 70 wolfish nations of the world? In this week’s “Reading the Gospels through Hebrew Eyes,” @chadbird1517takes us through Luke 10:1-20 to see how the Old Testament aids our understanding of the mission of Christ’s disciples.
Thank you for another great deep-dive into the scriptures, I consider myself so blessed to have stumbled upon 1517 on CZcams.
It’s not directly related to the main subject, but the meaning behind getting the dust off our feet of a town that rejects the Gospel brought up something in my mind.
I’m currently listening to the BibleProject podcast series they’re doing on Leviticus, and we’re at the point of discussing the purity laws. To try and sum it up, the things that are unclean (impure might be just as accurate a word), like bodily secretions, skin diseases, etc. are impure because it is a reminder of our mortality. God wants us to draw near, but we need to repent for our sins and “uncleanness”, in a manner of speaking.
Back on subject, I love the use of numbers and animals, all the imagery used in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, and I am especially thankful for people like Chad Bird that are really helping me see the Bible in a way I don’t think I ever would have without these guys.
I knew there was a better explanation about this passage. May God have love and peace for you and your family for explaining this to me in detail I am so happy to hear this. I get so discouraged today, but I am retracing tonight.
Great info. The Lord bless you!!
Very interesting and deep. Thank you 🙏
❤❤❤
Thank you
Wonderful background (and of course it's more than just background). The older I get the more I rejoice in the fact that the whole Bible is one testimony.
Very excellent presentation.. knowing the details and idiom makes everything much clearer. Thank You 🙏
Professor Bird may I have this power point ? this is very helpful material for my sermon. Thank you
Excellent. Thanks. I think we can also say that if the sending of the 12 was to Israel then the sending of the 70 is a foreshadow of Luke's version of the Great commission that he gives in shorthand in chapter 24 and then again in a different form in Acts chapter 1. And thanks for the point that the table of Nations is 72 in the Septuagint I actually was not familiar with that so that was very helpful
Jesus by His Spirit has lead met to Luke chapter 10 over and over the past 3 years. He shows me numbers on a daily basis, and takes me to the Strongs concordance and biblical meanings and applications. He shows me the number 144..the 70/72 pairs are are G1440..72 pairs..72*2 = 144. This account in Luke, like every other in the gospels has a prophetic tone of an 'is to come' event..it this case Jesus will send out appointed (G322) apostles (G652- also a frequent I see) to proclaim the coming judgement and the good news of how to escape it...hence the urgency. Like the 7days the ark was loaded with the door still open before the water came..
Significant of number 70
What is the difference between the lost tribes of Israel and the Samaritans ?
Weren't they the same people ? How could the 12 decipels go to the lost tribes of Israel if they had been removed by the Assyrians many years earlier ? Quite perplexing
Where did the 70 /72 come from that they had shown Yahshua they would do this ?
72 disciples are the collaborators of the apostles.. The 72 disciples are the priest.. While the apostles are the bishops..
