I graduated from High School in 1971 and my life was changed when I was gifted a new camera. I remember listening to Carol Kings Tapestry as I looked through the camera brochures and listened to all these albums as I left for and arrived in Europe for my year long stay there. Nostalgia! 1971 was the best year for Rock albums and coincidentally it was the best year for fine 35mm cameras with the Nikon F2, The Canon F1 and all the other major players like Minolta, Pentax, Konica, etc. What a pivotal year. When I returned from Europe in '72 EVERYTHING had changed. The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Credence...all gone. Sad.

Boy, 1971 had so many great albums....I kind of agree with you, this may be the best year ever of album releases. Enjoyed both of your rankings of the top 10. I am with you Mike, how could anyone not rank LZ 4 the number one album of 1971....I liked how you reacted to Dev, but I get where she is coming from. :)

    • @MusicforBusyPeople

It's kind of unfair to make Dev rank them when she has only heard highights, but it's just for fun, so what the heck. 🤪

I was on the cusp of my own musical discovery around '71. At 13, just getting into school band and having a mother whom enjoyed musicals which I also watched (lot's of Disney, etc), it was shortly after this I saw Alice Cooper on 'In Concert' and everything changed. It wasn't long before I began growing my musical library and learned more instruments besides concert/marching drums. Bass became my thing and there were so many good bass players rocking it. I was curious which bands would be featured here as I mentioned, I was a noob at this point.

I graduated High School in 1971, the music was off the charts. I remember arguing over who the best rock band was, a ridiculous proposition. Barry Gordy's Motown talent was killing it, creative greatness with blues and Pop. Great shirt BTW. Led Zepplin 4 was my Number 1.

Tull was amazing in concert in that time period. Got to see them 3-4 times between 71-73. All of these including the honorables are classic and still sound great today, as well as hundreds more

Good evening Sir and Madam. I am back in wi fi world from Fuerteventura. That was a great fun resume of albums from 1971. What a year! Then again, every year was rather good from 1967 onwards tbh. No one could reasonably argue with your choices except any Sabbaff fan would put MOR in the top 10 automatically. Probably. Anyway, my own “ honourable mentions” would include “ Nantucket Sleighride” by USA band Mountain and “ A Space In Time” by UK band Ten Years After and “ Fireball “ by UK band Deep Purple. WTF do I know anyway? Thanks again both. Take care out there.

    Hey guys,
Love it. Great selection of albums.
Dev, “Aqualung” refers to the main character having pneumonia - the sound he would make when breathing, like he was drowning.

Nice video, Mike. I enjoyed how Dev IMMEDIATELY jumps down your throat at the first use of "objective". I understand what you were attempting to get at, but it was still funny. I was ten in 1971 and raised by classic rock. I own most of these albums, but I avoid listening to them because Boomer radio has played out a good portion of these songs for me. The availability and access of all kinds of music is better than it has ever been, but we have lost the shared collective experience of album oriented radio. Which is a little sad.

"And you snatch your rattling last breaths, with deep sea diver sounds." I think that's where "Aqualung" came from. People dying of respiratory illnesses, which was not uncommon in England historically, sounded like people using underwater breathing apparatuses. Thus the term, "death rattle". It is said that Ian Anderson's wife at the time helped with the lyrics. Apparently he also posed for the cover art.

For me, Meddle is Pink Floyd's second best album. Therefore it has to go right towards the top for the year, probably at #3 after Led Zeppelin IV. But #1 for me, with absolutely no hesitation, is Close to the Edge by Yes. Hard to choose a list though, because as you say, hell of a year.

In 1971 I was 22 and your spot on my generation no not the who we were literally spoilt for choice because there was so many gifted incredibly talented musicians and song writers around it was an awesome time in my life your number one picks are perfect john lennon and imagine what a wonderfully talented man we lost far to soon we were not related but the day he was killed I felt like I had lost a member of my own family what could have been and as for the giants of rock led zeppelin it's all been said over so many years to do what they have done and still be at the top of this incredibly competitive rock world is mind blowing wonderful wonderful rock band

So another Album you should check out from 1971 is ‘Stormcock’ from Roy Harper. Not a household name but over 20 studio albums to date so plenty of longevity if not the highest sales and this was one of the best. (You might only know him , as many others do, as the vocalist on Pink Floyds track ‘Have a Cigar’ from Wish You Were Here). Stunning album, take a listen off channel. Good list for the top 10 and it underlines the astonishing amount of quality in the industry in the first half of the 70s. I would avoid ranking them though as I would change my mind on a daily basis.

Ian Anderson is an innovator and highly regarded as a flutist.
Led Zeppelin is always number one. Stairway made me stop and listen when I was five. Before that it was Petula Clark with Downtown. 😅
Shout out to Travis, a man I knew who knew Marvin Gaye and his father. God bless. He was cool.😢

Aqualung & Fragile: check but … Just Another Band From LA (Zappa & The Mothers) - The Yes Album (Yes) - Nursery Cryme (Genesis) - The Concert For Bangladesh (George Harrison) - Moving Waves (Focus) - Acquiring The Taste (Gentle Giant) - Gentle Giant IS an acquired taste, but I love them. They're quirky!

To rate them without knowing them is difficult I imagine. To try to rate Hunky Dory without having heard it is like trying to turn water into wine. Can't be done unless you're the son of God. You need to hear "Andy Warhol", "Queen Bitch", "The Bewly Brothers" and especially "Quicksand". "I'm the twisted name on Garbo's eyes, living proof of Churchhill's lies..." It's not something you can appreciate without immersion.

You're not a kid anymore! Read the lyrics to Aqualung...very deep & perceptive. Basically telling the difference between the stereotype average people have for homeless people vs the reality of the humanity behind the surface appearance. Deb slap him for ignoring lyrics, please. (Also, if as he says ...Aqualung was one of his favorites, how did he NEVER search out the lyrics out of curiosity? Ever hear of the internet? Mind boggling)
