- Forgot to say it in the video, but the X220 also has a DisplayPort, which is compatible with HDMI. The X200 has VGA, but not that.
A comparison of the ThinkPad X200 and X220. Both great machines.

I wanna know who in the world first thought that chiclet style keyboards are better than classic keyboards.
I don't know but I think the first thinkpad to use chiclet was the X230 and it featured as an option a backlit keyboard. Maybe when they where implemented the backlit they decided it was easier to do with a chiclet design. I know on some newer thinkpads you can do a mod to fit an older style keyboard in them, which is pretty popular.
honestly man i prefer my t430's keyboard to the on my x220.
I prefer chiclet style keyboard than classic. Where's your God now?! :v
ive had both for a few years and i couldnt really tell the difference. when you press the A key an A appears on the screen, when you press the B key a B appears on the screen etc etc what more do you want! :D
@ zebble ganubi - Speed, accuracy and comfort with a non-confusing classic IBM layout. Thank you Santa, I have been a good boy this year.
1366 x 768 is actually a very common resolution. And just under 1920 x 1080. You could say its a small bit better than 1280 x 720 (720P)
It's basically what computer monitors have INSTEAD of 720p. Also 1080i TVs are actually that, normally
EDIT: Except there's also 1360 x 768 and one of them is the weird one.
1366×768 is so bad if you are used to 1920×1080. 900 is much better and almost comparable to 1080, but 768 is noticeably bad
@@Aiden-vj2tg I switch back and forth between a 25" 1080p monitor and a few different laptops with 1366x768 screens constantly. I see no real difference. Maybe if you were using a 25" 1366x768 panel, but on a laptop it's really no big visual difference for me on 11.6", 14", and 15.6" laptop displays.
@@smileyguyz the real difference is everything renders larger to meet the same pixel requirements and field of view in video games is much reduced. If you decrease the size of things such as text it becomes blurry with unfocused edges

I have an X201i with a Core i3 and an X220 with a Core i5. I'd say that they are basically comparable, but the wider display on the X220 'and the slightly faster processor) are worthwhile improvements. A Core2Duo is really a bit slow for modern use. I had an R500 with one, and when it finally died, I was shocked by how much faster the replacement was at web browsing and multi-tasking.
My web browser frequently bloats up to 3Gb or so all by itself, so I consider 8Gb to be a minimum, even for routine use. 16 Gb is nice (I have this in my home W510), but 8Gb in the portable X-Series laptops is probably enough. That's what I'm using. An SSD is definitely a big upgrade and highly recommended.
Two videos in one day? Your spoiling us Luke.

Something that really annoys me the most about the X220 is the lack of 16:10 displays. You lose soooo much usable screen space with 16:9 panels and for computer purposes 16:9 is the absolute worst and useless format. Especially on 12' subnotebooks. 16:10 always made more sense as it combined the best of both worlds. The vertical space of 4:3 and the horizontal space of 16:9.
This is what's making me want to track down an X200s or X201s with the 1440x900 display, more screen real estate than any X220/X230 model. Shame the display was never offered on the full-power versions of the X200 or X201 though.
Good news! You can actually swap the X201s display assembly with 1440x900 and screw it right on the full power X201. It's what I did and it works great!
@@jasongoulet-lipman7308 That's nice to know. I bought an X230 and got caught by the small screen 16:9 impossible to live with aspect ratio and also the really really bad touchpad. I did a bit more research and found out that the X201 is the best of them - screen better, build quality better, better keyboard, full power CPU (watch out for the s model low power CPUs) and ALSO THE X201 LOOKS TO HAVE THE LOVELY LITTLE TRACKPAD FROM THE EARLIER SERIES (X300) - I just ordered one today and I will be doing a full head to head of the X201 vs the X230 on my channel, including VIDEO RENDERING against the T400 / W500 as benchmark.
4 years later and we still dont have that libreboot for x220
osboot + me_cleaner
I disabled the trackpad on my x220 too. It honestly just gets in the way when you primarily use the trackpoint, but makes for a comfy handrest.

@@abdulwahabjag Now it's dead..... NOT!
I always hit my 4gb limit, sometimes just browsing.
8 is great but if you like to run virtual machines for even visual novels because dealing with wine is annoying, it's a nice guarantee. Same with core2duo vs i5/i7
Now if you use 7zip and need to compress shit, a i7 and 16gb is 100% benefit.
EDIT:
1366x768 is standard for laptops even now.
You should get a 1600x900 or even 1080p ips for that x220, you wont regret it.
yeah man, browsers are absolutely notorious for wasting RAM like crazy.... just for opening a goddamn website. The sad truth is that developers have completely abandoned the idea of resource-friendliness and because of that you really need at least 8GB or RAM nowdays for a machine where you wanna do some web browsing on. Absolutely insane…
What OS do you use? I never went above 3GB when web browsing. I use arch btw
@@mateusgomes1086 Same here on full fat Linux Mint Cinnamon install with 4gb of ram and 2gb of swap. I rarely get over 3 gigs of usage and that's with Firefox running enough tabs to fill the top bar and maybe 500 megs used of swap. The worst I've seen was 3.7gb used with a full swap, but I also had more tabs with even heavier pages along with large projects open in Blender & Gimp AND Discord/Spotify open. I still find my 32gb of ram on my desktop useful though :)
@@smileyguyz iGPU also eats up ram so it matters if you have dedicated GPU or not

6:00 1366x768 is considered the 720p resolution, not sure why but 1280x720 doesn't match up right so they use 1366x768 instead.
since some programs require at least a 1024x768 screen minimum (mostly older windows and some point of sell programs have this issue) causing some programs to have 48 pixels cut off a 1280x720 screen.
Man I wish I would have bought a x220 instead of the x230. Maybe one day they will find a way to make the x230 compatible with libreboot. Works with coreboot atm thou. It also doesn't have a classic keyboard but a chiclet one. I can deal with that I even got backlit on it. However knowing there is a mod to get a classic keyboard to fit on it makes me curious if I should invest in that. Thinkpads are really the best laptops, I hope they never stop making them.
The good news is that if the X220 is successfully Librebooted, the chances of the X230, T420 and other post-i5 posts getting a Libreboot increases drammatically. The modern Intel ME has been a big stalling factor in freeing the BIOS in later computers, but if the X220 is successful, that means that overcoming similar MEs in other devices should be much easier.
Let's hope! I love your channel btw :D
You didn't mentioned different aspect ratios of the two screens (16:9 for X220, 16:10 for X200). Also, the X200 has only VGA output, hence a plugged external monitor may show a somewhat reduced video quality. Lastly, although Core 2 Duo may indeed be enough for most folks, it is not as energy sufficient as Core i5/i7 (read: reduced running time on battery).
I know this is a 4yr ol' vídeo, but I just need to get this right. Coreboot is less potent than Libreboot in terms of cleaning up every Intel blob? I am only asking this question because I have an x220(t) and I would like to modify it to run Qubes.
Are lenovo thinkpad X200 good? I was thinking of buying it
thanks Luke! I am going for libreboot + x220!
No Libreboot for x220. But you can compile Coreboot with castrated ME.

Excellent video. Keep it up!
Wouldn't we all be hype for a libreboot exploit for i5/i7 processors? It's not like anyone would be willing to give up their privacy and stick w/ the intel process manager just because it's "hard to install libreboot on their computer". :|
You underestimate the number of shameless and despondent normies who not only don't care, but will actively signal against you if you say obvious "conspiracy theorist" facts like what the ME does.
I've used the x200 for years. The wifi card is weak, and though I replaced it, the bios beeps a lot on start up. Also overheating is definitely a problem. There are a few fixes around, but basically you have to take the keyboard off and hoover it out occasionally. I think I must have replaced the hard drive with the wrong ssd because the Crucial BX500 does a little but not that much for the speed.
Is there any modern laptop that follows the thinkpad philosophy ?
I mean in the sense of them being very easily reparable, parts being easily replaceable and laptops being upgradable.
Of course without need to have the mptherboard exposed in order to acces hard drive or whatever.
I ask because it is going to be more and more difficult to get parts to fix them as tome goes on. Even if you are very careful with your thinkpa, eventually we are going to run out of old second or third hand thinkpads to use.
What do we do then ?
It's been almost 2 years since this video was made. Has the libreboot team managed to get libreboot working on slightly newer Thinkpads yet?
the latest release is from 2016
New version released, but forget about new hardware. They won't accept a castrated ME.

castrated ME = no libreboot

@@vitacell1 That kinda sucks.
@@mr_beezlebub3985 Yeah I know, but it's not a devs problem, and we need to blame Intel. Intel should release their ultra-super-mega secret ME's source code, which is easy, they only need to release it.
I'm curious about, how long are these machines' battery life?
Xunius Xu I bought a new Lenovo battery, and it lasts around 6 hours with medium brightness.
I hope that you removed the glue stains from the X220 since making this video; it's like a splinter in my eye driving me crazy...
Thinkpad X220 vs Thinkpad T420 which one is better ?
2017 and we still have no standard 'form factor' upon which to slap together laptops.
Now that we're gradually moving to a world of 3D printing and decentralized manufacturing, this is more of a possibility. God knows traditional manufacturers have been resisting it. Having easily decomposible and repairable products is disasterous for brands but great for users.
Luke Smith oy vey muh shekel
Luke Smith is there any notable difference between the x200 or the x200s, or other ThinkPad models with the same p attern
Salty Man, the main difference is that the X200 use full voltage processors, which gives more grunt for some more heat and fan spinning with an incremental decrease in battery life, while the X200s uses a low powered one, which gives up some processing power for more battery life and less fans, along with a more portable design and weight. Some s models have a 1440 x 900 screen, but it is still that shitty TN display.
But, good news! There *is* an AFFS mod for the X200/X201 (s included), which delivers radically better color and viewing angles! It's just a Google search away!

The X230 is much better. Here's why:
Very easy to mod in X220 keyboard.
Much faster and power efficient 3rd gen i5. Also runs cooler.
Usb 3.0 on all models.
Still the same chassis as the x220. Only difference was the kb and palmrest.
Now the bios is unlocked so you can fit in other wifi cards and get rid of the battery whitelist.
MUCH better graphics preformance.

How about heat? Are there temperatures regular when laptops are idling and when you are doing something intensive ?
Can you make a video about it and show the temperatures? cause small laptops usually have overheating issues
Thanks a lot
My experience is going to be anecdotal, but I'll tell you: when I got my X200, it had just gotten new thermal paste; it keeps very cool and only starts heating up if it's on wool and doing something really intense.
The X220 has not gotten new thermal paste in years and when I'm recording video, for example, it can get into 9X degrees celsius (too hot for my comfort!). I was actually ordering mini-screwdrivers now that I need to reapply thermal paste myself. I suspect it will be as cool as my X200 when I do, or at least manageable.
So I'd say if you know how to reapply thermal paste or can have a friend do it, you shouldn't worry about it. Otherwise, you might want to buy one advertised as refurbished with new CPU paste.
wow, where did you put the thermal paste? my x200 is hot under the palm rest area, it's no longer a laptop but a lapheater
I dont understand the advantantage from X200 above x220? What is libreboot?

What do you all think of the x200s? There are some to sell in my city at lower prices than x200, are they cheaper made? There seem to be some particularities to take into considerations when librebooting, so I am not sure I want to buy it and not being able to libreboot it.
read the libreboot website :) It is possible, but some configurations concerning RAM is an issue. I have an x200, and I love it. But it gets too hot to be used as a primary computer and the process of librebooting seems very complicated to me :/ I need more elite friends.

but you can't compile programs on it,
you probably can't really do other private things on it like use bitcoin, right?

You can compile any program on any computer, even cross compile.

Any update : Could the Intel Managment Engine get removed on x220 ?
No, but it can be castrated with ME_cleaner
libreboot.org/faq.html#intelme
Yes and no. You can get rid of most of the ime with coreboot but some pieces must remain sadly.
what are the most modern cpus that work with libreboot? As far as I know it works with intel core i2 2nd gen or older, but what about other brands?
You can check the Libreboot website to see what motherboards they support. They've mostly focused on computers with native Intel processors, but there are a few others. I will say AMD processors have been just as bad; they have something analogous to the ME preventing Libreboot from being easy.
Of course it's less the processor itself that's a problem and more what kind of garbage comes with it.
besides from the by libreboot supported hardware, are there some more companies that manufacture cpus/mainboards without these "additional features" and could possibly librebooted in the future?
There's a company called Purism that's removing as much as possible, but reality is you can't completely get away from it. All Intel chipsets since 2008 include the Management Engine. Up to the Core 2 series chips it could be disabled, which is what a Librebooted x200 does. In the Core i3/i5/i7 it's not possible to turn it off. The best that can be done is to trim down the ME firmware as much as possible, but the ME will shut the system down if it's not supplied a minimally valid firmware signed by Intel. AMD has something similar. The only way to completely avoid it is use x86 from before mid-2008 (like Thinkpad x60) or look at an ARM based system.
You said the res is 1366x768? That's a common cheap laptop resolution.

Anyway Libreboot is a Coreboot distribution, so you can compile Coreboot and castrate ME, but it still be here (basic parts for boot) and only Intel knows what it does. Libreboot just won't accept and tolerate any blobs/proprietary software.
@@vitacell1 pretty much this, you just can't quite remove all of it.
The Acer E 15 has that rez. 1366x768. Very odd, IMO.
For some reason thats a really standard laptop resolution these days. I wish it was something like 1600x900 or higher, but that's what i get for buying cheap crap
1366x768 has been the most common resolution on laptops for years. It's done to keep scanline rate compatibility with the XGA standard (1024x768) and just increases the pixel clock. This stretches the display horizontally to accommodate a 16:9 format, hence 1366x768.

make a review of the T420 bleeaseeee
how did you upgrade your x200 to 8GB? It wont work on mine :(
You just need two sticks of DDR2 RAM. Remember that you should also have a 64 bit operating system: 32 bit OSes have a RAM cap of around 4GB.
Here's preceisely what I bought:
