Rob, just wanted to thank you for this brilliant video. I’ve just replaced the door handle on my wife’s Fiat 500. It was the driver’s side, so a bit of extra fiddle with the barrel lock, but your video helped me immensely. Probably wouldn’t have tackled it had I not seen this. @@OneAuto I am having a tough time with the unhinging the part at 3:52. I think I may have broke a piece of that black plastic. But I have the American version, and they sent me the British handle. I guess Ill have to wait and see. I dont know what the name of that plastic part is if I have to order it!
Thanks so much Rob. Your video help tremendously. We just bought my daughter a 2012 Fiat 500 Pop and after less than 3 weeks the door handle came off. Thanks to your video I saved myself some money. I ordered a new handle from Amazon and replaced it in just over an hour. I did have a problem getting the locking part of the handle in the tiny space but I found that if I kept the door handle open, it let the heavy part go down and just a bit of elbow grease put it right in. I also found that the inner membrane was gone in the exact spot you cut out and you could tell someone else had replaced the handle previously. Anyway, thank for taking the time to show us amateurs how this is done. Confidence is high!
This video is great, I fitted a new handle to my sister's car today with the help of my dad. You saved my sister alot of money the fiat dealership was going to charge £250 to replace the handle, it cost my sister £24 and it took only about an hour to fit. Thanks again.

Just wanted to say thank you for this video. I have literally just finished doing my wife's passenger handle. I struggled removing the cable from the door handle but I noticed the handle has enough give for me to unscrew the broken hinge off and screw a replacement hinge back in so that's what I did. Took me possibly 1.5 hours tho (running back into the house for something else in between).. Thank you!
Winner I was just thinking this. So once the cable is off the door handle it must allow the door handle to be pulled out enough to replace only the hinge without the faff of taking the part to the rear of the door. I emagine you still need to remove that nut by the lock? Hopefully all goes well. Thank you.

Just got the hinge only off eBay as the handle will be weathered the same so only hinge to do. I think the part is OS and NS so winner. I'll do the job when the missus is out as she's already said it's a 10 minute job with 40 minutes if tarrets with the handle in and out.....

Thank you for this brilliant and very explanatory video. It helped me a lot in replacing the hinge, not the whole door handle. I didn't remove the handle and I was able to replace the hinge which saves you money and time.

Many thanks for this Rob, excellent video. Like others I managed to just replace the broken bit (ebay £7.49) and didn't need to take the handle off completely. One thing that may help others: I found afterwards that the handle wasn't springing back on using it, but seems that was because I'd over-tightened that nut at the hinge end.

I just changed the part that was broken, got it from my local dealer, very cheap 11-12 £ here in sweden, but you video was very helpful to repair our Fiat 500

Thanks for the info , how hard is it just to replace the hinge ? It is the driver door handle on my 500 that is broken .
if you regularly lubricate the hinge part/ back of the handle with wd 40 aswell as the locks this will prevent corrosion from setting in and it breaking away 👍
Very helpful video. I've messed with the insides of doors many times, and it is always a frustrating job. Your video convinced me that this is NOT something I want to do. A body shop up the street said they'd do it for $125, including parts, so I'll go that route.

Thank you so much Rob the handle came out easier than I expected .The only problem I had was taking the nearest rod off it was so tight as you said and I broke the red clip at the bottom.10 minutes on ebay and new clip ordered The only thing I had to do was leave the rear rod attached to the handle on removal at the lock end as could not get my large hand near the clip to undo it. I bought a replacement hinge for £8 like Richard bishop once again thanks very much.

Brilliant video. The handle is easier to remove if you disconnect the vertical rod before removing the 10mm nut and the T30 screw. Just pull the top of the rod towards you. It is a metal ball in a plastic socket, and pops in and out easily
Good video, thanks. Apologies if someone else has covered this, but I can't read all the observations. I noticed you undid the link bar at the bottom, but when you finally got the handle off, the bar had also been detached from the top link, ie. the handle. Having done one this morning, I don't think the handle can be completely removed from the door with the link bar on. It was possible for me to pull the handle out at an angle to get enough room to remove the screw holding the hinge without taking the bar out of the handle. The hinge I bought came from a Fiat agent and included the plastic bush for the top bar- not needed if you leave the bar attached to the handle.

Great video, i just did the drivers side (uk), ended up getting just the hinge for £6.98 from fleabay. I'd recommend on the central locking version to just get the hinge, there's so many inaccessible rods, it's easy to just leave them in place, wiggle the fat end of the handle out enough to just screw a new hinge in. I re-used the old screw as the new one was shorter and my old one was in good enough shape. Small smear of molly grease on the hinge part should keep it nicer for longer. I also damaged the speaker a little with the long plastic retention pieces that secure the card to the door, please be careful with this part, but my old speakers were perishing anyway.
Was it easy enough doing this rather than removing the whole handle to fix it? I have the hinge and need to have a go at doing it this weekend!

Very simple set up. The handle is tricky to get in & out. The drivers side was a bitch LOL good job I accidently deleted the footage and swearing! You got some bad weather ATM havn't you?

Very helpful video - thanks Rob. It is a bit of a pain of a job though! I also used masking tape to protect the paintwork which helped. I gummed up the new hinge with copper-slip as the old old one was completely seized causing it to snap.
Everyone: Let's just put a bolt.
Engineer: Let's make a puzzle clip that has to be lined up perfectly in 16 dimensions.

I have just fixed my daughters door handle, but using a genuine Fiat repair kit ( 51964555 ), which basically is just the aluminium hinge that has a metal pin which rusts and breaks. It saves a lot of time, as you dont have to disconnect the cables. Having said this, i could not have achieved the job without watching and refering to this video. Thank you for posting Rob .

Quite easily , helped to look inside and see where the handle lugs were located in relation to the cutouts in the door.Thank you.
The issue: this was designed by a left handed person. When you open the door with your left hand you are levering it in the correct direction - the portion of the handle that does the actual opening of the door latch. When you use your right hand you tend to pull on the hinge end, thus stressing it far too much and breaking it. Both of mine broke, one from a ham-fisted mechanic that was yanking so hard on the handle to open it he snapped the pin,(the common fracture of the handle), but just pulling too hard on the 'wrong' side of the handle. Try it, you'll see the difference.

Thanks for this great Video on the Fiat 500 door handles. The video is excellent, you show every step AND you explain it so well. My 2010 Fiat 500c gave in on the drivers door handle last month - I'd lent my car to my partner for the first time, for 3 days... his ham fist must have wrenched it off😑 I still think I've done well for 8 years of "touch wood" trouble free driving & 78000 miles. They're great cars if you don't lend them to heavy-handed people!🤪

We followed your instructions, all went well until we failed at the lock check! I lock my car and you are able to open the door where the handle was replaced, without unlocking 😳

And it only costs about £6.
North American are slightly different. There are two self tapping style screws that go in from the side that hold the door panel in that need to be removed before you can pop the clips out to remove the panel.
Also I found I couldn't get the new handle to go in no matter what I did. I finally had to take a file and file down the tabs on the bottom quite a lot before they would finally "pop" in. Possibly just finicky and I wasn't patient enough, or aftermarket parts not built to the correct tolerances.
Very tidy work there Rob. I've recently become pretty handy around door handles myself. :)

My niece asked me about the Fiat 500 or as I would called them Fix It Again Tony. I told her that the first generation had terrible suspension problems. Saw a new 500 with way too much toe out, the left and right wheels were pointing 90 degree apart....

Hi.... great video. I have similar problem with my passenger handle on my 2012 500 Sport.... I have been told that you can just purchase a hinge kit instead of replacing the whole handle as you did..... is this true? I replaced my driver side handle last year with an after market one I bought on Ebay and although it was reasonably priced, the installer said it was a pain to install because parts didn't line up properly, so I don't want to go through that again and run myself more of an expense to replace the whole door handle .... if I don't need to! Perhaps that was because the driver side handle has the locking component, as you said. Please advise!
Yes you can now get the hinge alone. As for your installer of the handle… even genuine ones are a pain in the arse to line up 😂

I just did this fix with the repair kit that I bought on Amazon. No Alfa Romeo part required. I still had to remove the door panel, cut the styrofoam, remove the 10mm screw and the t30 in the door, all of which I did with an Allen key. Then take the handle partway out, unscrew the front hinge (which is the broken part) insert he repair pat, screw it up and put the door back together.
Save money and work by just buying the repair part. No need to disconnect rods by the side of the door, no need to remove the door handle, no need to buy the whole handle. The part was made in China and not perfect but damn near.🤷🏻

Do u have any idea why my remote contol central lock keep open second after i click lock. It happent after i change the door handle and think all was Good... Good video btw ...

Same here...and this handle on this car is a nightmare...this is where I call most car engineer idiots who should get their heads out of books! I have been repairing cars for a long time and I have seen my fair share of stupid engineer solutions(they are the worst in the car industry) my son would have come up with a better solution using legos.
@@eliteinfo My workaround was to put some epoxy on a long stick, spread the epoxy on the hole, stick the rod in the hole and let it set overnight. The handle works fine now and its been 5 months.
I got an abarth 500 but the door doesn't open from the outside for the passenger side, but it can open from the inside any help or guidance will be appreciated

You can get just the hinge as a repair item. Look for "Fiat 500 door handle hinge repair kit" on Ebay.
I've been quoted £120 by Fiat dealer to change this. Looking at other comments hinge can be bought for £8 and whole handle kit for £20. Mine is the drivers side door that's gone, so if it's even fiddlier not sure I dare attempt to repair it myself as a first time self-repair job! Even if it does save over £100.

They are stuck so hard you end up tearing them and make more of a mess anyway.

great video 👍 it's the drivers door on my girlfriend's fiat that I clean pulled off yesterday! not going to attempt it myself but what should I be looking to pay for the labour as a guide if I get the new handle? if it was the other side I might have given it a go but sods law it wasn't!

Thanks for the video, it was very helpful. I replaced the drivers side door and have two questions, how can i get the lock tumbler out of the old handle and place it in the new one? Also after i placed the new door handle on, it doesn't seem to want to sit flush with the rest of the handle after i let go of the handle, does it work itself out or maybe i have one of the bolts on too tight?
Lock is held in with a spring type retainer see here www.locksmithledger.com/article/10825831/how-to-service-fiat-500-hatchback-videos-added If the handle is not sitting flush it will not be fully located in the guides where you have to slide it into position. I know what you mean though as I’ve done that as well and had to reposition it. They are a bitch to get in right. Hope this helps and thanks for watching

It only cost her 500 norwegian kroner for the knob, she told me many years ago she had a broken knob and nobody could do it for her so she took it to a mechanic and it cost her 3500 norwegian kroner, so thank you for saving us money 🤑
castellated bit ???....i'm confused both my hinges have broken on my Alfa 147.....can i cheat on drivers side and superglue handle back onto hinge ?

I gooped the broken bits and it works like nothing ever happened (probably stronger than before) it seems alot of work when it will probably happen again
