WTF Happened to Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One?

  • If you had a gun to your head and had to answer candidly, what would you say is the best action movie franchise of the 21st century? While John Wick is quickly climbing the ranks and a real argument for the Fast and Furious can be made, when it comes to jaw-dropping stunts and eye-popping setpieces that continue to get better each time out, it’s hard to top what Tom Cruise has been able to achieve with the Mission: Impossible franchise. Indeed, while early results from directors like Brian De Palma and John Woo might be varied, Tom Cruise has remained the one constant and used his superstar wattage to help everyone from JJ Abrams to Brad Bird retain his own stamp while improving the overall quality of the franchise. With that in mind, the collaboration between Cruise and writer/director Christopher McQuarrie has catapulted the Mission Impossible Franchise to a new level of dazzling entertainment and death-defying stuntwork.
Remember, Cruise and McQuarrie have remained simpatico since working together on Valkyrie in 2008. Since then, McQuarrie has penned scripts for such popular Cruise vehicles as Jack Reacher, The Edge of Tomorrow, The Mummy, and Top Gun: Maverick. In the interim, McQuarrie wrote and directed Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, and of course, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, part one of which is currently playing in cinemas.
Although the movie has proven to be a critical and commercial success thus far, a lot of behind-the-scenes drama relating to COVID-19 inadvertently delayed the production, substantially ballooned the budget, and posed quite a legal risk for Paramount Pictures. Throw in controversy over the use of a historic Polish bridge for key stunts in the film and a stunt that suffered an accidental fire, and the seventh Mission: Impossible movie may not seem so lucky after all. Stay tuned, we’ll dig up and examine a lot more about the making of the movie when we discover WTF Happened to Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning!

I love the JoBlo videos, I really do. I look forward to a new one every week. But, it is amazing some of the things they get wrong at times.
Cary Elwes character of Russ Wheeler in the movie "Days of Thunder " was never Cole Trickle's rival turned ally. JoBlo has Russ Wheeler mistaken for Michael Rooker's character Rowdy Burns.
One could argue that Russ Wheeler is the opposite, an ally turned rival, because when you first meet the character, he's nice to Cole. But even then, one could see through Russ's facade, so even calling him an ally turned rival is questionable.
I'd venture to say he's not only Cole's rival from the get go, but an out and out adversary.

Barbenheimer's surge, IMO, is greatly helped by the "double bill promotion" campaign. the trigger and driving force behind it is the media, too, because the reporters in every red carpet would ask the actors from both movies: which movie should the audience watch?
i get it, the two movies opening on the same weekend are on opposite sides of the spectrum, they are so different from one another, but... c'mon! you ask that question, what do you expect the answer would be? they're not gonna trash on the rival. of course they'll say watch both.
re: M:I-DR Part 1, the only thing that felt sour for me is that they killed off Ilsa Faust. i think everybody expected that to happen after seeing the trailer, but i was really hoping that she would make it to the end of Ethan Hunt's saga and walk toward the sunset with him.

I also felt killing Ilsa was nonsensical... she was developed over three movies to be a highly skilled sniper, bike rider, fighter and a chemistry with Ethan that has both romantic attraction as well as a mutual professional respect plus she was brave... all the aspects of a strong female character without overshadowing the male lead or having to dumb herself down... plus her uncertain relationship with Mi6 added so much depth to her story and character...I saw killing her off as simply making way for Haley Atwel's character and wanting to show Ethan (or Cruise) as a strong, protective male lead who will gladly sacrifice himself for the female lead. It would have made more sense if Ilsa sacrificed herself trying to save the others but the way she went was simply to motivate EThan's resolve and tie in the shoehorned history with Gabriel... I don't know... a lot felt off and abrupt and nonsensical to me.

There's only two complaints I had with this movie. The first, and this is honestly been a trend in recent years so I can't really blame the production for jumping on board, is the 20 minute car chase. I'm NOT a fan of super-long car chases in movies. It's in the same camp with super-long shootout scenes (like John Wick 4 suffers from). After about 10 minutes, I started thinking, "Can we just move on?" That's not to say it wasn't well done, it's just exhausting. My other chief complaint was them explaining the "entity" in at least 10 different scenes, at-length, without offering any real insight. It feels like these scenes were done more as filler, and not to actually make the audience understand it any better.

He’s usually looks fine, and regardless of what ever procedures he’s had done there is usually no sign he’s had anything done, but this time he just looked noticeably different most of the time: it was really taking me out of the movie. My biggest problem with the movie is killing off Ilsa. Let's kill one cool woman off and introduce another one I could care less about. It felt cheap. Maybe if they had waited until part two it might have felt a little less slimy. If Ilsa proves not to be dead, that's great, but otherwise I completely lost interest in the movie after she died, especially with the underwhelming way the team reacted to it. As it stands I hate Hayley Atwell's character for that reason, and also because I just don't care for the character.
I think it would be hard to make a better movie after Fallout. The whole Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning movie sort of dragged for me and I think there are too many characters floating around to give them meaningful involvement in the time frame of the movie.

I think she’s still alive and will return in the 2nd installment. The film already teased her death earlier on, showing that she likes to play dead, foreshadowing what happens later. I believe it’s all part of hers and Ethan’s plan… which makes sense considering they’re both trying to defeat “The Entity”, and making the A.I. believe that she’s out of the picture will ultimately be what helps them get the jump on it.
Also, the film doesn’t give her the typical “proper movie death” where she says her final last words to Ethan. The film just shows her unconscious before kinda awkwardly moving on to the next scene where we as the audience are led to believe that she’s gone. I don’t think Cruise and the director would do that with a character of her magnitude if they were actually going to kill her off for real. Just my take away.
Oh, and I also heard she’s credited for the next film too, but some people have said that it could just be a flashback scene. I don’t believe that’s the case.

I love this channel, I do, and I really love the MI movies including Dead Reckoning, but it is tiring listening to the narrator always getting things wrong. This movie is NOT in the black, its nowhere near being in the Black financially. Hollywood math requires a movie to make 2 1/2 times what it cost to make, so even if we ignore marketing costs (which are never reported when announcing costs) the film would have to make $727 million and it has so far made $552 million. It has cost Paramount a ton of money.

To make any movie is an exercise in madness. To make a Mission Impossible movie in the midst of a global pandemic, it's insane on an unimaginable level. The fact that it ended up being a good movie is truly a miracle. But Paramount really did dropped the ball: Had the movie opened in june, it would have reigned over the box-office.

If Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two films outer space, that would be cool to see Tom Cruise go up there.

Wow it's been a long time since I've seen a video that is this wrong about what it claims. This movie is definitely NOT a financial success nor in the black. A little research goes a long way guys. The budget was $291 million plus a marketing budget of $100 million or more. That's around $400 million just in costs. To date it has made a little over $500 million globally. Considering the the studio will only see about half that after theater and investors get their shares, not to mention the massive back end deal that Cruise always works out for himself, and this movie will probably lose Paramount upwards of $100 million or more. Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie, but to see a channel as big as yours blatantly ignore facts is just sad. Clean it up guys.
