    The screwdriver trick to get my fan running just saved my family from another almost 100 degree day until having a professional come look at my unit. Considering I have a 4 month old, I’m sure you can imagine how relieved we were to have a temporary fix! Thank you!

      Same here! Part is on the way and this will work for now. Although I have to "kick start" it about every 15 minutes. We don't have kids but we do have 2 pugs which are very sensitive to the heat.

    The Screwdriver trick worked once for me, but not after that. However I had regular house fan that was wide enough to put over the top of the unit which I used to blow into the unit. This actually also started the fan blades to move in the AC unit and once it moved fast enough the AC unit fan started working on its own for at least that on/off cycle. So that is an alternative method to try if the screwdriver push is not enough. The added benefit though is that if it is dry outside, you can just leave the house fan on top of the unit while you are waiting for your capacitor to arrive. Since it is blowing continuously it should allow the AC fan unit to turn when the thermostat in your house causes it to need to turn back on.

    In an emergency, if your fan is not spinning and has resistance turning freely, a huge trick is penetrant oil, cut the power pull the fan Motor off leave the grill on, flip it upside down, push the rubber seal up on the dust cover, try not to damage it,add some oil to the shaft, let it soke for about 5 minutes, notice the fan spinning freely now reattach..I'm sure this will get you through until you get a new motor if this is the case.

    Great video, very helpful! BUT! You mentioned spinning the fan clockwise, and mine are both counterclockwise. If you look through the vents at the top at the fan motor it will indicate a rotation direction - make sure you look at this. The air should be drawn upward through the coils. For mine, spinning clockwise drew the air downward.

    Listen.. I’m not kidding when I say you may have GENUINELY saved my life with this video. It’s currently 105 degrees here, and my AC suddenly stopped cooling about 40 minutes ago, and although I’ve yet to do this repair, your kickstart method to get the fan going actually helped me getting my AC running to start cooling my house back down. I’ll update when/if I’m able to do the capacitor repair, but for now you’ve saved me. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH.

      Just was questioning about what's happened since, has it stayed cool since?

    • @myluciddesign
      @myluciddesign Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@ceeferg433 so I haven’t been able to attempt to replace the capacitor yet, but this method has helped me to keep my AC at least semi-functional for the past weeks, and yes it still cools fine. There are a few caveats for me though:
      1. He says “clockwise” in this video, which I’m sure does apply to his unit, and that’s exactly what I did after watching, …BUT.. that was NOT good in my case, because the fan blades -would- spin up and turn on the AC if I spun them clockwise, but there was a ton of heat coming from the SIDES of my unit, and very little air coming out of the top… It was cooling, but not super well.. Well one morning I turned it on and it spun up on its own (happens maybe 1 in 10 tries) and I noticed no heat from the sides, and strong air flor from the top… so just for the hell of it I turned it off, and when it didn’t come on this time, I attempted to spin it COUNTERCLOCKWISE this time, and it spun up with a ton of power, strong top air flow and no heat from the sides.. that as when it dawned in me I’d been spinning it the wrong direct for 4 days. It worked.. but it was forcing the air DOWN instead of up and with nowhere to release like it has on top, it was forcing the air out the side vents.. so be mindful of which way you spin because I had no idea it would operate spinning either way.
      2. This is the big one… it WILL spin up and function, but the problem is that… say you set it on 65.. once it reaches that temp, it shuts itself off, but once the temp rises ABOVE that temp, it will send the signal to turn back on, but if you don’t just happen to be outside ready to spin the fan when that happens, then your fan motor could burn up trying to spin on its own. So I’ve been having to get the temp down really low, and the shut it off completely for a couple hours. It’s not ideal, but prevents a worse situation.

    For me after watching all these videos, I just replaced the Capacitor hoping it was the fix after my unit blew warm air on a 101° day. If it didn’t work at least I replaced it after 16 years of doing abs nothing. I had no testing equipment but It worked for me thank god! I also cleaned the air vents with dish soap and a hose.
